Yeah, I've been playin' D&D for 21 years and have played 1e, 2e, 3e, 3.5 and 4e. I prefer 3.5 and 2e to 4e but I wouldn't buy a 5e that was basically a repainted 2e - or 3.5. Why not? Cuz I can play 2e and 3.5 any time I want to right now. While 4e ain't my cup o' tea, the answer isn't to reskin something we had, it's to give us something new with a nod to all the previous editions. Make it new enough to be truly different but keep players of all editions in mind when you do it. So far, from the very limited stuff we've seen, it seems that this is exactly what they're trying to do. Whether it works or not remains to be seen, but I give it a hell of a lot better chance of makin' it than I do some copy of a previous edition. Cuz no matter how good they were, they aren't new.
Well said. Other than the fact that I prefer 4e, everything else you just said is pretty much my take on it too.

When I came back home to read the response to my appeal, I figured on a range of comments. What I did not consider was the outright hostility and presumptions leveled here. In fact a few posts violate the rules of this board. If the folks I see here are really representative of the gaming culture today, I can fully understand why the game has gone in a downward spiral into the toilet. I guess the 4e preference here says it all. Funny thing is you don't even understand what you missed. Maybe it's better that way.

Before you go, can I interest you in considering that perhaps some of the hostility toward you came about because your idea for uniting all generations consisted primarily of dumping a considerable portion of the fan base on the curb?
Honestly, I feel my own disparaging remarks toward your idea cannot even come close to the callous elitism you've displayed.
Seriously, though, you should check out the PbP Haven. You might also like Real Adventures, IF you're cool. | Knights of W.T.F.- Silver Spur Winner | | 4enclave, a place where 4e fans can talk 4e in peace.

Actually you managed to offend some of us that have been playing DnD since at least the mid 70s. Congratulations on unifying the generations.

Awesome thread...
But I think OP might be right. 5th editions grand unification might have nothing to do with 3dot or 4eh but rather the oldest of schools - when it was called grammar school.
It's gonna be a new edition, but it's starting to sound like it's gonna most resemble those older games.

Gentle Readers: I have played since the first edition was in print, from the days the great Gygax ruled the game with his vision. To say that my beard is grey and long in the D&D arcana would be an understatement. Like a sagely wizard I own nearly all there is to own in my library. Hearken my words brothers and sisters, because I know not how much longer I have before I cannot impart my gaming wisdom.
I don't think I could write a better overblown charicature of an oldschooler if I tried harder than this guy obviously did.

It's the easiest to detect the biases of others when zealously clinging to ones own...
Feel free to dislike or all out hate the direction the game has gone in, just don't assume anyone will agree with that opinion. The 70's are over, and to expect a company to try to operate like VHS is cutting edge technology is simply unrealistic. Things have changed drastically, and the tough part is they're changing even faster with each passing day. Companies that do not conform to the modern business climate wont be able to keep the lights on much less afford to operate something resembling a business. The market has begun to inundate consumers with an upresidented amount of purchasing options that will ultimately result in quite a few casualties in the industry. What you're suggesting, no matter how noble the intent, would ensure the failure of the brand.
The game stores are packing it in, small comic book shops are dissapearing left and right, and even mainstream bookstores that can afford MAJOR mark downs have been vacating thier storefronts (Borders is just plain GONE). Now if this isn't proof enough that the old school that still love the feel of a book in their hands is not a viable group of consumers to market to, then there is truly nothing more I can offer. The digital way to operate is not far from being the only way to operate, and to go digital you have to be attractive to that audience, and the bulk of that audience is pretty young at the moment. 5E will be 5E, and if I hate it so be it, but if it keeps the brand alive to see a 6E then WoTC has made the right call...even if I nerd rage and boycott 5E only to then post on a forum decades later about how they should cater to my gaming generation...not that that would be similar to anyone posting in this forum or anything...

Obviously that just means that it's right where it was in your day.

You just are as snobbishly as some of the worst h4ter and de4enders
