Will the magic system be changed from the fire and forget Vancian system?
i more wonder if could design it so modular that you choiced which magic module(system) to use

I am hoping for a Modular magic system.
Let players pick between a 4E style power system, the Vancian system, a Spell point system or even a skill based system. Lets face it sometimes you have an idea for a campaign setting but the Magic system gets in the way. Giving us different magic systems to play with gives us more options for what style of campaign we want to run.

At what point is what you're trying to achieve just GURPS, then?

You seem to have missed the fact that they have already said they are building this game with a modular approach in mind. If a player wants to keep his character simple he can, if he wants to make it complex he can. I can't see them not using the same appraoch for creating a magic system.
and since they also want to unify the factions and bring everyone back to the same table they can't stick with a single fixed system.
If they return to the Vancian system they loose the 4E crowd If they stick with the AEDU system they loose the fans of the Vancian system If they invent a new system they risk loosing both
Better to make it a modular system that offers a choice to each group on how to use it.
