The thread could have easily been made without making lowblows to previous editions.  Talking 4e up is one thing..talking the other editions down is the problem .

What lowblows? These are legitimate complaints even from some 3.x players, and which Pathfinder attempted to adress to some degree (not enough for my purposes, but I applaud the fact that they even attempted to balance 3.5).

But having to explain why having spells that obviated the need for skills is a bad thing in the long run?

Why the fighter was never a good meatshield in the first place?

Why balance is a good?

All legitimate complaints, acknowledged by grognards and 4evengers alike. The difference is that the grognards like old D&D despite (or because of) these things, and the 4evengers are glad that these problems no longer exist (or have been reduced greatly). Unfortunately, the two positions are, apparently, unreconcilable, and this is why a 5E that attempts to cater to lovers of all editions is ultimately doomed to dismal failure.

Nah, if you were just full of hot air, you'd still be posting.

Seriously, though, you should check out the PbP Haven.  You might also like Real Adventures, IF you're cool.

To the OP: Just play the D&D YOU love, and quit worrying about these dumb boards. I'm 44 and started playing with my Dad on the original rules. "Edition wars" as they progressed when I was a kid, were the "adults" making joking jabs at each other. Now with the internet, you get people who hide behind the keyboard and say whatever they want without any responsibility. Why get involved in that?

I'm a happy soul with 4e, but I too can be happy playing just about anything else. It's all about the gaming and having fun. Once people learn to stop arguing stupid points that do not change your life or enhance it one bit, maybe they'll learn how to have fun again.

Why doesn't WotC instead of creating an entirely new edition expand on all editions before it?  Anyone who plays an edition other than the current one is basically stuck in a non-updated world.  I'm not a big fan of 4e and when I played 2nd ed it was alright but not my favorite.  I play in a 3.5 world and enjoy it.  I wish though that WotC would slowly update this version without creating power creep.

They can create new editions all they want, however if they don't fit my groups playstyle like 4e did they aren't going to get any money out of us.  However if they have teams working on doing stuff on 4e books and fixing its issues while having other teams going through and fixing issues with every other edition thats great.  To be honest I don't want another edition, I want fixes and more options to the edition I play.

I'm kinda tired too, Foxy, of fighting the endless, ill-informed hate, but....the thing is that I didn't realize how much D&D meant to me until the day that they announced 5th Edition was coming out. The boards exploded, and the next day, I noticed myself being mad over some of the stuff that people posted about 4e.

That is when I noticed how much D&D meant to me. Sure, I could just live the rest of my existance in my 4e bubble, and ignore 5e, 6e, and whatever else comes out. But, the thought of just abandoning this nerdy hobby of mine, and letting people haul it back into the dark ages? I can't let that happen.

But, good to know you're on the D&DN boards, even if you aren't posting.

I've replaced the previous Edition Warring line in my sig with this one, because honestly, everybody needs to work together to make the D&D they like without trampling on somebody else's D&D.

Look, if 5e doesn't end up being the game you want, you can still play 4e... just like I still play 3.5.

That said, if you don't participate there is less chance that you will get something that you like--that's why I'm here, too.

I think the problem with a lot of posts on this forum is that people are still edition warring instead of trying to find common ground or ways to compromise. There's been a lot of misrepresentation on both sides of the fence and that doesn't contribute anything constructive. Each side has legitimate complaints--and we need to focus on those so that we can work towards something that's worthwhile for all of us. The "my way or the highway" approach that I'm seeing a lot of (on both sides) needs to to stop (though I know it's not going to) ad we need to look for solutions that are inclusive.

Playtest or get off the playtest boards.

Ya see, that's the thing: I wasn't mad.  Due to life in Hong Kong and work and family and the lack of a regular game to keep D&D in the somewhat forefront of my mind, I hadn't been on the forums all that much when 5e was announced.  Just checking in periodically for Rule of 3 and L&L.  I found out about 5e from CNN.

And when I popped over here, read the articles and quickly browsed the forums, all I could really muster was an "Eh, sounds kinda like what I thought it was going to be".  I made a quick review of my own posts in various threads, back when L&L was being done by Mearls.  I had made some predictions and guesses, and I was more or less on the money.

So I'm like, "Yeah, looks like they're gonna do pretty much what I thought they were gonna do", and decided to wait for the playtest.

I'm going to playtest the crap out of this when I get the chance (figuratively and literally).  I've already got my U.S. crew ready for a PbP game, which should suffice for numbers and balance and fiddly bits.  But until then, I just can't get jazzed.

I...could actually write an entire essay on the multifaceted flaws of both 3.5 and 4E, from almost every perspective (Simulationist/Narrative/Gamist being the Big 3, of course). In fact, the anger at how people do so (and often!) about 4E as of late has almost made me do it just about 3.5, though that of course wouldn't be very fair.

Still, whether I completely remove any variations of, "In my experience," just using pure mathematics and avoiding anything that is actually just nothing but pure preference...I'd still get flamed or end up fighting countless more battles, and the entire purpose of such a thing would be subverted. It just...doesn't feel worth it, so all I end up doing is reading some things I really enjoy around here, or responding to things I feel are very misleading or downright incorrect.

A worthy sentiment.
