I have to say of all the stuff introduced in 4e, I've been least enthusiastic about the Shadowfell and Feywild. Mostly I think it's because unlike the Elemental Chaos which is two fists full of awesome, the other two aren't these sprawling infinite planes, but are reflections of the World. This most of the time ends up being less fun than it sounds.
Say you're exploring an abandoned windmill--you shift to the Feywild! What do you fine? A sunny glade and a hill where there would be a windmill, but now it's just a hill! How about the Shadowfell? You cross over and you find...an an even creeper abandoned windmill! Who builds windmills in the Shadowfell anyway? It's just too closely tied together. You really want to be able to pass through and find this wonderous and untouched world controlled variously by powerful creatures like fey lords, primal spirits, or on the other side sorrowsworn or domain lords.
I love the Domains of Dread being out there, and maybe pristine glens that are the domain of primal spirits--but other than that I'd say lets make the Shadowfell and Feywild a lot more free and anything goes!
Now with 100% more Vorthos!

Yes, it you describe a realm in such boring, uncreative terms, it will feel boring and uncreative. This is a DM/perception problem, not a content problem.

Anytime you talk about what is fun and what is not fun, you're talking about something subjective. Not everyone is going to agree that the shadowfell and feywild are boring. That's what's awesome about how things are: You get elemental chaos to make you happy, the kumbaya singing hippies get the feywild, and the emo goth crew gets the shadowfell.
There's a little something for everyone.

I was always of the impression that the Feywild and Shadowfell were both mirrors of our own world; the one being a manic pixie dreamworld with the tower being overgrown and possibly transformed, and the other being an underworld version where the shades of the various inhabitants of the tower might dwell. Both are inhabited by nasties; the Feywild perhaps by man- eating strangle vines and cannibal pixies, while the Shadowfell version (obviously) by the undead.
In a sense, its like the old Energy Planes from 1e; one is full of rampant life energy, the other full of rampant undeath energy.
And unlike crzyhawk's happy chaos, feywild hippies, and emo shadowfell; all three are bloody deadly. This is where the Dark Sun Creature Catalog. comes out for a non- Dark Sun campaign.

Different strokes for different folks. Grimcleaver sounds like he measures movies by the number of car crashes, which may mean he will love the elemental chaos plane. But that does not create any need to revise other planes so they provide the same thing. In fact, it creates reason not to. There has got to be a tearjerker plane, a comedy plane, a ...

I would have to go with almost exactly the reverse. I find the Elemental Chaos boring, it's just random elemental bits. I found the 3x elemental planes more interesting, if only because they where conceptually more interesting. The Feywild and Shadowfell are great though, both consist of a mix of shaodws of the real world and sections that are totally independent. The shadow bits provide some context and connection to the real world, but allow space for things to be different.

Where do fey and 'fairy tales' come from? In 4e, they addressed this point exactly with the Feywild, a canon-ized version of the Land of Faerie from 3e. You can deposit powerful, ridiculous beings in this world without worrying about how their presence would affect the regular inhabitants of the real world. Players feel the real world isn't real enough, send 'em to the Feywild to see a ludicrously high-magic world with bajillions of intelligent races, all acting inhumanly. Where do the most powerful undead and shadow creatures come from? Pre-4e, this was a combo of two big black balls of nothingness, the Plane of Shadow (primarily used by PCs as illusion-fuel) and the Negative Energy Plane. The Shadowfell not only unifies these concepts within a place adventures can actually take place, but it's also a home for Ravenloft and other domains of dread. Admittedly, I also happen to like the concept because it reminds me of Zelda: Link to the Past. Anyways, both of these echo-planes give DMs tools to work with. Send the PCs to another world for an adventure or two to mix things up, especially if the campaign is mired within one city.
4e D&D is not a "Tabletop MMO." It is not Massively Multiplayer, and is usually not played Online. Come up with better descriptions of your complaints, cuz this one means jack ****.

Really? An entire infinite plane of nothing but (element of choice) is more interesting?
Another day, another three or four entries to my Ignore List.

Dammit, now I want to know.
Seriously, though, you should check out the PbP Haven. You might also like Real Adventures, IF you're cool. | Knights of W.T.F.- Silver Spur Winner | | 4enclave, a place where 4e fans can talk 4e in peace.
