Hello everybody, I'd like to ask you if someone of you knows what WotC's plan to support 4th ED actually means. Whether it means more books coming out or just a promise "we won't pull the plug on DDI for 4th ED and we may release occasional errata". Now, I'd like to explain something. I'd like to introduce DnD to my gaming group, who are all boardgamers and while I haven't played DnD before, I have played some tabletom RPGs. Despite being hated for it (or to put it better - one of reasons for hate it got), the fact that it too much resembles a boardgame makes it a feasible candidate for my group - it won't deviate much from boardgaming and it will provide a gate to RPGs. Sure, I may wait for the next edition and it may or may not be better than 4th ED in this regard, but there is the financial situation. Getting both editions may not be feasible for me. Therefore I'd like to ask what this support probably means. I know that current edition is fully playable, but the possibility of more additional content may make it more appealing. Thank you in advance.

theres a lot of great looking 4e product slated for this year, and they have said that even when the new edition comes out they are leaving the 4e tools up. i am just going to trust them on this last part, and hope they do it

Actually it does kind of make sense frothsof. If you think about it, WotC knows some people just won't ever be on board with 5e for whatever reason. If they keep the 4e DDi up and running they can still make money off of those people while hopefully bringing back some of the people they lost when 4e came out. I think it has the potential to be a win/win situation for them if handled correctly. They would (should) of course have to lower the price of 4e only DDi since there wouldn't be any new content developed for it through the magazines.

Gaining victory through rules bias is a hollow victory and they know it.
The argument goes, that some idiot at the table might claim that because there is a "default" that is the only true way to play D&D. An idiotic misconception that should be quite easy to disprove just by reading the rules, coming to these forums, or sending a quick note off to Customer Support and sharing the inevitable response with the group. BTW, I'm not just talking about Next when I say this. Of course, D&D has always been this way since at least the late 70's when I began playing.

Yep. "Some people" here includes me. For various reasons, I won't be buying into 5e in the forseeable future, but I'll happily keep my DDi subscription for as long as the online compendium, character builder and monster builder are 4e-compatible, even if there's no more new 4e material added. I'd be even happier if they reduced the subscription cost for people like me, but I actually consider what I'm currently paying to be pretty good value just for access to the tools, even without new material.

i totally agree, and im not sure if they will make a 4e only ddi sub but its a good deal even without the mags.

My prediction is that they keep the DDI price the same, maybe raise it, and say that along with the soon to be coming 5e tools, you also get the DDI 4e tools. It's like getting 2 games for the price of 1!
