So we finally played our first skirmish game and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, we managed to totally mess up the rules...! I misread the "Destroying a Creature" section, and somehow got it into my head that the player who destroys the creature in question moves gold from their vault to their supply, even though it specifically says "the owner of the creature moves gold..." Oops. My opponent and I simply accepted this error, thinking that the gold was intented as a reward for defeating the creature... much like you would get XP for killing a monster in traditional D&D. It wasn't until one of us ran out of gold and we read the "Ending the Game" section that we realized our mistake.
I guess we let our expectations for what the rules "should be" overshadow what the rules actually were. For instance, in Castle Ravenloft, you get a treasure card when you defeat a creature, and in Conquest of Nerath, you get a treasure card when you kill a dungeon guardian. So we just assumed that you got gold when you destroyed an enemy creature in the skirmish game.
Despite our mistake, it does raise an interesting idea. Perhaps some sort of "reward" mechanic might actually add to the game. It would have to be simple, so as to not overcomplicate things, but it's always fun when you defeat an enemy and reap the immeditate rewards of your victory!

I admit that on my first read-thru of the rules I thought the same thing as you. I wonder if there's something else that the gold represents that we could use instead? Like you said, it should feel like a reward for the destroyer, not the owner.
I'm wondering if the "gold" is really "summoning mana" and when you lose a creature you get its "summoning mana" back to re-use, but there is only a very limited supply.

Any other people find the gold reward when your own creatures are killed to be a little weird?

While it would be nice to see some kind of immediate reward for destroying an enemy creature (maybe vp?), I think the current rules make for a great balancing mechanic that can create interesting tactical situations.

I was thinking that a Victory Point reward might work. It would have the added secondary benefit of being an ongoing score: "It's Drow 14, Heroes 8, in the final minute of play..!"

It was weird at first. But then if you think of your vault as kinda like HP (like magic) then its not so wierd. When your opponent destroys one of your creatures, your vault is drawn down. Now it just so happens that as your vault is drawn down, that makes your supply stronger which, in turn, could make you more dangerous on the battle map. I like the mechanic. I think I would have given the vault and supply different names to give more flavor to what occurs... maybe the vault could be called your... I got nothin. Your supply could go up when a creature goes down because maybe they are all mercanaries that work for you and now you don't have to pay that creature that just went down... no, that's no good either... Maybe just stick with vault and supply.

It did take me a couple of reads to understand that part of the rules correctly. Same as LyonHearted, I find myself trying to think of a different term for the concept - maybe Vault=Army / Skirmish Points and Supply=Reinforcements.
I think the concept works well to keep the game balanced but it probably does need a better term for it.
The new terrain rules with Treasure squares still works here, I can easily accept that Gold adds to the resources you have to wage a battle.

I do, it meant that I could slowly build up enough cash for my dragon over many turns of scrimping, or just throw away a soldier and use his money to get the dragon out. A strategic choice to be sure, but not an enjoyable one, especially when the latter seems much more likely to win the game for me.
