i downloaded that skirmish game's pdf, printed it off, laminated the cards, poured myself a cup of joe then sat down to read the rules. i was disapointed to find out that you don't roll any dice ergo how can they say it's d&d. eeerrgghh! now its just a poor version of the game of thrones card game.

How does it compare to the GoT card game? Just because it uses cards?

yes. im not comparing the content and details of the 2. just that it uses cards and no dice. im also not denying that it won't be fun as i like GoT and any game that entertains me. but, when i think Dnd i think, beyond other things, rolling dice. i don't like that it's automatic hit and damage but then again i haven't tried it yet and i might totally like it. but then again i have a limited amount of d&d friends here in japan and it might be hard to convince them to play when i tell them to leave their dice at home.

my personal feeling is that its not dnd if there's no dice, just an opinion though.

Fair enough. The lack of dice is a little jarring, but I like that it allows more focus on tactics and strategy. This game rewards choice over luck.

well i'll try and get someone to try it out with me so i can make a fair assessment. but as a feedback it would be nice to through in a small element of luck with the dice, if its possible. i always love the feeling of a natural 20 or when my foe rolls a natural one and stabs himself in the toe. i'm also thinking of myself as well. like i said i have only a few DnD players here in japan and many times only 2 of us can play so a fun skirmisher game with dice would be fun. i can only play so much ravenloft and i just ordered conquest of nerath which will tie us over for a while. anyways back to the drawing board on creating my own skirmisher game and this game definately gave me some ideas.

That was the first thing that drew me to it when they announced it at Gencon.

how can they say it's d&d.

Wellll... D&D Video games didn't use dice, same with Blood Wars and Spellfire, and there are a huge number diceless card games based on dicey RPG's and Wargames (Call of Cthulhu LCG, Space Hulk Death Angel, WH40k CCG, Car Wars tCG, Battletech CCG, etc.). The fact that this uses miniatures actually puts it closer to it's roots than those.

I for one welcome our new, speedy battle system.

good point. im 40 and a friend got me hooked on dnd a couple of years ago and i really havent played anything but 4th edition except for a few games of GoT. i quickly became addicted and i just personally prefer the casual, take your time, role playing, rolling dice over the system in GoT. you obviously know way more about the genre than i as i've never heard of any of those games so i will trust your judgement. i just want more ways to play DnD when there are only 2 players and this sounded promising. cheers.

Exactly, it speeds it up a lot not having to roll dice and do finer grain math calculations.

If you play the game dal64 you will find that it offers much more in the realm of strategy and tactics.

And there is still the random element of which creature and action cards are turned over at any time - especially as some cards are more useful than offers depending on the state of the battlefield.

As a longtime player of the old Skirmish Game, I have to say, rolling dice for all those guys gets tiresome. In this version you can just focus on tactics and not be distracted by extra math.

Don't forget, D&D also released a card-based diceless version. It was called Dragonlance 5th age, if I recall correctly. I played it and enjoyed it, although it didn't last long.
