I just got play my first game. It was a lot of fun. The gold mechanic is a beautiful balancing agent and timer. Kudos to whomever designed that.



A couple questions came up that I'd appreciate some clarification on:
1) With Advancing Strike, can the movement come before the attack? Or only after?
2) Is line of sight required for action cards such as Darkfire? Or can they be used around corners?
3) Can creatures with the ranged keyword tap to make a basic ranged attack? Or does their card need to explicitly have a ranged power on it?
4) Does the Shield action card block both attacks from the Rapid Shot card?

After. You process the rules on cards in the order they are written.

Currently, there are no rules about line of effect, so you can use darkfire and other things like that around corners. However, if you think it should be otherwise, in the playtesting phase (i.e. now) is when you should provide that feedback!

No. To quote the rules on page 3 of the document:

To make a ranged attack against a creature, you must activate a power that allows that creature to do so, or play a card that says “make a ranged attack” as a part of its effect

No. Each attack is its own source of damage. From the glossary entry on source:

The source of damage or an effect refers to a single instance of the use of an action card, an inherent power, or an attack.

I do think that lines of effect should not be able to curve. Otherwise a character like the Half Orc Thug can just sit behind a wall and deal damage. Seems too over-powered.

I played my first game tonight and I would have to agree, we decided to play as if you need line of sight.  The question we had was in regards to the final turn and Victory points.  On our last turn of combat my Gold Dragon killed his Shaddow Massiff and he only had 1 gold in his vaultso was unable to pay the level amount from his vault to his supply giving me the victory points.  This was my last activation of the round so I ended up with the 3 Victory points.  Since I was the one to act first in the initial skirmish, does that end the game or does he get his turn to complete the round to see if he can attempt to take out my Gold Dragon or Earth Guardian to try and get the win?

Is there such a thing as rounds in this or is it just turn based?  We might be a little too used to regular DnD as it seemed weird that although he had more characters on the board at the time that I would get the win without giving him a shot at his turn.

I agree that line of sight should be a general requirement for everything, otherwise you could end up with people doing attacks through walls and it takes away the strategic aspect of the game using cover.


So on a more contentious example this would include Dragons Breath AOE - the line of sight to the square of chosen and line of sight to each square that is affected.

It's turn based. We don't track the rounds currently. So in your example, when your opponent couldn't pull gold and you started gaining VPs, that was the last turn.

I think that LOS should only be required for the origin square. The rest of the blast can bend around corners.

It also sounds like no creatures block LOS. At the least, enemies should block. Maybe even allies. Would add to the tactics and I think that works well in games like Memoir '44.

Personally I really don't like the idea of allies or enemies blocking LOS. I think it would really bog down the game as both players take extra time to make sure they have their pieces set up just right to either block or open up LOS. Also, ranged attacks already seem slightly underpowered since there's always the possibility of dodging it completely and that would further nerf it.

But they can only dodge completely if they have cover and are untapped, all of which you know beforehand. I dont think its that underpowered. Especially once you add in that there's not the option of a counterattack against ranged attacks.

This is fine for arrows, or breath. But, barring bolts and missiles, what about magic effects. A spell is not an arrow, and I think it might add an edge to a spellcaster deck, also, as astated before I also believe ranged abilities are slightly on the "meh" side.

I'll play test effects as darkfire or other magical blasts as able to do damage through cover, at least a couple of times.
