Umm, in my last session my level one party encountered a band of orcs. I went through both my magic missile spells, one of them empowered to do maximum damage, and I only killed one Orc. Granted, my first casting was split my missile between three different orcs (as they all were already damaged by a fire trap) but didn't kill a single one despite the fact that they were each already hurt. My second cast used my daily feat to empower them and two missiles hit one Orc and killed him, and one...

Maybe what they should do is have "classic" advancement, which is more of what we are used to and then "official advancement" for use in dnd encounters and living campaigns, as i suspect that's what is behind this move any way. Then people can chose. That could work but it involves not singling out the fast track approach as the default or "right" way to play.
I know this for sure, it will fail miserable in its goal of attracting old school players back into the fold if they read that the...

On a side note, when I create pirate NPC's, I usually include a mix of fighters, rogues, and fighter/rogues, as well as some casters. Clerics of sea gods or wizards with parrot familiars, even a druid with his water and air magicks and a monkey companion, works great.
When I PLAY a pirate, however, I generally create him with the ranger class. Why? Because when I play a pirate, I like to dual wield a sword & dirk (or a sword & flintlock, if they're available). The ranger's inability...

I cast my vote for the Grizzowl. I had always thought of the beast in terms of the Gryphon as a combined creature (not that the Owlbear belongs to Greek mythology).
Do you plan on illustrating a mating pair, as the original concept indicates? with a lean enough frame on the female Grizzowl, could wings actually come into play?
The idea of a mating pair should bring potential for more realism with this creature, and it certainly gives great opportunities for DM's who could imagine the...

First off, I like the Hit Dice mechanics for healing, and don’t have a problem with how HP’s are gained each level. Those are fine, but I think some of the other posters are right, just call ‘Hit Dice’ used for natural healing something else (surges, first aid, recovery dice, etc).
‘Hit Points’, as defined by M.Mearls, raises my hackles. Actually, it’s just a different way of saying ‘Wound Points’ and ‘Vitality Points’ like the Star Wars games. Which I liked, and they worked well, but...

I like concept A the best. The other examples don't show enough 'bear'. See also Curse of the Asure bonds - my original introduction to owlbears. www.gamebanshee.com/curseoftheazurebonds...

I like the anatomy and the "mammal snout" of the second design but the exposed skull looks too wrock.
While I always though of it as a creature of mystical (almost fey) origin it also was clear to me that it is "of the forest". I might be totally wrong.
The skin on the legs and feathers on the body should feel to the touch like an owl but the feathers and pigmentation of the skin should look different in each forest depending on foliage and season. Thinking of this I wouldn't be...

I don't recall ever mentioning I'm teaching noobs, but either way when a character dies and is unable to return for any reason (story wise, not enough resources to resurrect, player wants a new character) the only option is to create a new character at a higher level than 1. If the rest of the party are paragon then a new character should be within +/-1 level of them. Level 1 PCs would be useless and die every combat at paragon tier.
By only selecting the recommended options in the builder...

I am not implying that you are interested in teaching noobs, but you did mention in a previous post that the lag in time was especially when introducing a noob, and that is what I was addressing. I do actually make higher level characters after character death or when a new player joins, if I can't run them through a few solos to level them up that way anyway.
I don't use the various extra options in the CB because I don't the options just in the PHB 1-3 boring or generic. I find there is...
