Enjoying the playtest packet a great. Gives me just enough to play the way I want to play. Looking forward to seeing what else you come up with. I actually DO like the skill dice mechanic a lot, so a bit sad it might be going away, but I'm going to trust the alternatives will be just as interesting. Thanks for bringing in bits & pieces of the past, and reinterpreting the system with a more modern feel.

Sir Corin's got a point, there's a character in my group doing just what he says and the guy isn't greased up, just punching a lot. They're likely to beef up such feats, which would bring him onto par with the barbarian in the party, so I'm not sure Sir Corin's reservations aren't misplaced. Sorry about the triple negative.
I appreciate Clan Battlerage clarifying h/h view of how maneuvers could work like powers. I think maneuvers have to be defined a lot more specifically to make their...

I really like the consideration on licensing. I would love to see what was mentioned so that we could see more settings. Not any hate on FR or Eberron, but I'm still looking for a steampunk setting that ya know feels steampunk- I doubt WotC will be doing it (although would be thrilled if so) but it would be nice to see other publishers able to do so and let it work well with the character builder and other tools.
I remember some 4e thing that looked neat but required players to make their...

i'd prefer they do away with monks completely. I think it's silly that they are equal to fighters in attack, damage and defense potential. Then each level they get powers that mimic rare or higher magic items. THEN they can get magic items that stack with their stuffs...

I must say you do have a difficult job in laying out the strategy as you release each new edition. From the standpoint of the three groups we've play tested 5e (Next) with we've come to the consensus that you must balance:
      1. Maximization within the market segments that yield the highest profitability (I am guessing this gets younger as the years go on).
      2. Various ages of D&D players who each have a special place in their heart for a specific edition.
      3. Keeping the original...

I would never call the lack of fluff reason for mechanics a weak point for 4e, personally, I think one of 4e's strengths was it put the fluff back where it belonged, in the hands of DMs and Players...out of combat actions, story, roleplaying, all work better in an environment where the rules aren't focused on them, but rather on just resolution mechanics, which 4e was. The DM an the Players bring the story, the exploration, and the interaction, they bring the story alive, and the more staid and...

I see worries that tracking expertise over the course of a long round could pull players out of the story.
You could represent expertise dice WITH ACTUAL DICE.
If you have 5d6 in XD, then stack 5 six-siders in front of you at the start of your turn. If you use 2 on attack, they go into the center of the table. You can then use the remaining 3 on parrying, attacks of opportunity, etc.
This prevents the need to track anything in your head.

You could split XD into Expertise Dice and Damage Dice.
When a player gains an XD according to currently rules, give fighters the choice to gain a "Damage Die" instead, that adds to every attack. Then get rid of Deadly Strike. This will let players differentiate between "Simple Fighter" and a fighter with a variety of combat options.
Alternatively, replace XD with "Action Points", but still give fighters the choice between "one action point" and "one damage die" at key levels. Then,...

Should all elves be the same body type? No, of course not. Should some elves be fat? Yes. But What is fat for an elf? It isn't the same as what is fat for a human or a dwarf. An Obese elf may well have a similar body type to a plump human.
Just look at real world animals... I'll use different breeds of dogs for examples. A fat greyhound isn't very fat compared to a bulldog. .. it is still fat for its breed but the "natural" body shape of a greyhound is so thin to begin with that...

I would love to see variations in bodytypes among all non-humans, not just the standards like dwarve and elf. I think the tendency to label any somewhat significant variation a subtype to be kinda ridiculous. Races should be allowed some realistic variation while still being consider part of the same group of elves or lizardmen. consideration should always be taken to what their specific race ideal is though, lest they lose the uniqueness that makes them an identifiably non-human race.

On a side note, when I create pirate NPC's, I usually include a mix of fighters, rogues, and fighter/rogues, as well as some casters. Clerics of sea gods or wizards with parrot familiars, even a druid with his water and air magicks and a monkey companion, works great.
When I PLAY a pirate, however, I generally create him with the ranger class. Why? Because when I play a pirate, I like to dual wield a sword & dirk (or a sword & flintlock, if they're available). The ranger's inability...

Nice stuff! I do agree with the comments about warlord being an awkward name.
I'd love to see "Soldier" promoted. Soldier really does speak of teamwork to me, while Warlord does sound like a solidly established leader.
It would be odd to see a game where the warlord is the less experienced player taking direction from the party wizard.

The difference between warlord and fighter should be analogue to the difference between wizard and sorcerer. Warlord should be considered a "sage", an intellectual focused on warfare, tactics and strategy. In a 5th ed. revision I would like to see a more "realistic" class: for example he should be the only class to have automatic access at 1st lvl to full plate ('cause storically the Condottiero was the only one who could wear a Gothic Plate, ad a matter of fact) and should also receive some...
