      Dice Tricks
Lots of RPGs out there use various dice tricks as a part of (or the entirety...

I think dice tricks are an excellent tool, but should be used carefully. A given class or build might use dice tricks extensively, but they should try not to halt the game too much. 2d20 and take the higher is an especially good dice trick because it's easy to calculate. Also, it's quicker to add +3 than +1d6 to your d20 roll.

Well, D&D doesn't have a lot of history with these so-called dice tricks. They can work sometimes, and add a lot of flavour -a modifier from a very variable source, like a luck spell, could in fact be a die instead of a fixed number. Rerolling and adding rolls are slower than straight mods though, so that's something you should not abuse, really. It's OK for chaotic situations and complex, long tasks, but it should be used very moderately.
There are lots more tricks of course, but hey,...

DR is is frustrating rule and I felt that it was overused. For monsters like demons and werewolves where mythology or at least popular culture have assigned them a specific weakness it is a great way of duplicating this without making them invulnerable. However DR should be a special thing reserved for them, a personal bugbear was the barbarian's DR for no apparant reason in 3.5 (not sure if it is present in other editons).

Alternatively "I am Thorak, mighty warrior of justice with the power of my arm and the weapon I min-maxed out of the back of the DMG!" *kills everything from goblins to ghosts with same weapon*
Not exactly the quest to bring the Sword of Shannara to the Warlock King is it?

Thanks for stopping by and taking time to comment on my blog. Yes, I believe the world, technology in particular, is killing our creativity. There's just no competing with instant gratification. My friend, Ray, plays the WOW monser and we were the best RPers in the group, but now he says he couldn't DM a game to save his life. He no longer has that spark of just thinking things over and looking at them from a new angle. Here's hoping we can come up with something to keep the next generation rolling.
