Umm, in my last session my level one party encountered a band of orcs. I went through both my magic missile spells, one of them empowered to do maximum damage, and I only killed one Orc. Granted, my first casting was split my missile between three different orcs (as they all were already damaged by a fire trap) but didn't kill a single one despite the fact that they were each already hurt. My second cast used my daily feat to empower them and two missiles hit one Orc and killed him, and one...

Maybe what they should do is have "classic" advancement, which is more of what we are used to and then "official advancement" for use in dnd encounters and living campaigns, as i suspect that's what is behind this move any way. Then people can chose. That could work but it involves not singling out the fast track approach as the default or "right" way to play.
I know this for sure, it will fail miserable in its goal of attracting old school players back into the fold if they read that the...

...halflings should return to their origins -hobbits- if we want that the power-of-the-genre-archetypes concept which D&D is based upon since it came to life spread its magic; it seems they do so and I'm very happy!

I've always thought of the Hydra as a multi-headed snake - a snake body, and each of its heads is a snake head, rather than a dragon-like head. I'd be find with multi-headed dragons being some other thing, but to me, the Hydra in popular culture is very strongly slanted in favor of snake-like.

I have always thought of the Hydra are a sort of amphibian with skin that looked like that of a Frog. With that being said I always pictured the Hydra having a body and legs best suited for the water but was never constrained to just Lakes, Rivers, and Seas. How does that fit with all of you out there what are your opinions?

The problem with satyrs being male only is it is not really grounded in any sort of history. Satyrs weren't originally half-goat half men, fauns were and they could be female as well. There was a god and goddess that were fauns. Additionally, though it is more modern (by the 16th century), female satyrs or satyress' became prevalent. If you want to split the genders, include fauns (the O.G. satyr) as the female version, but to not have a classic female version against the role of history and...

I don't mind the idea of female satyrs (precedent in Fauns, from Roman myth, they were uncommon, but existed), male harpies (just makes sense to me, unless harpies come into being some other way, curse, god-spawn, etc), inccubi (male succubi, precedent in Medieval myth, tho they did have different abilities), maedars (male Medusa, but with different characteristics and slightly different powers), but I am hesitant about male nymphs/dryads. In legend, dryads where just one kind of nymph, and the...

      RE Hydra:
You want to cut off hydra heads because:
      - you get a respite from its attacks
      - it's much easier to do than attacking the body
      - the body is much harder to hit, has lots of HP, usually hidden (in a swamp, in the sand, etc), and attacking it might expose the attacker to devastating attacks.
      - the heads are coming right at you, so they are easier to hit (and perhaps intentionally not cutting them makes it easier for them to hit or something?).
      But I...

Quite a few posters have the iht idea: weathered, worn, distressed as conveyed through metal, wood, stone, parchment, etc. D&D isn't a "clean" milieu.

D&D is too various to be associated with only a few colors, however the most impressive and essential for me is the GREEN palette (including blue and yellow shades) and the spectrum of GREY (including pitch black and pure white).
I believe that a greater participation of natural, cooler and sober hues convey better (more authentic) atmosphere and immersion into the fantasy world, while too many bright and loud colors on a page, like in the 4E books, is rather tawdry and kitschy.

Have you considered consolidating Skills, Proficiencies, Languages, Bonus Spells, and so on under a unified Proficiency system powered by Skill Dice? If every class got two Proficiencies per level that could be spent to learn a new language, weapon, skill, spell or maneuver, it would go a long way towards enhancing character customization while also simplifying a large subset of the rules. It would also, quite frankly, make leveling up an exciting occurrence again, which is critical to the...

Also, have you considered writing guidelines for handing out bonus feats, skills, and maneuvers in the same way that a DM currently hands out magic items and spellbooks? Particularly maneuvers. The Fighter seeking out an elusive master warrior for training in their secret techniques is an evocative one. While this trope is most popular in Japanese fiction, it isn't exclusively so. See Agrippa, Bonetti's Defense, and Capo Ferro from the Princess Bride's dueling scene.

I like the prehensile tail - I use something like that (in my games Kobolds are deamonlings).
I don't like the connection to dragons - I don't like the weakest creatures to be tied to the most powerful in some contrived family bond. To be clear, I have nothing against Kobolds. In fact, some of my best monsters are Kobolds! I believe Draconians (Dragon Lance) cover the humanoid-dragon niche quite well.
Anyway, you forgot to post the picture of a Kobold from 2e - you know, the one with...

Ultimately, I'd like to see this edition tread lightly with setting dependent material. This includes things like the social details of races, languages and the like. A lot of this material is OK for a 'default setting', but some thought should go into how this will interact with setting material.
This is a general comment that extends to PC things like race fluff, language, and alignment.

The only thing I really don't like about the stat block is the average damage stat. I guarantee I will never use that rule, and it will only get in my way. I'd prefer that you stick with the old school damage dice plus modifiers only.
