King, as he is known, is a planeswalker of old from Dominaria. As a mortal, he lived about nine thousand years prior to the prospering of the Thran empire. He lived in a time when dragons ruled over Dominaria with an iron fist. His home was that of an island that belonged to a small nation whose name has been long forgotten by history. King's mortal life was short-lived since he ascended at an early age. Dragons happened upon the small nation and began razing everything in sight. A dragon of particular and terrifying power made its way straight to where King's family lived. The dragon killed King's family and proceeded to destroy his home. King, who had been absent when the dragon arrived, came back from a fishing trip only to see the horrific sight before him. Terror gripped him, commanding his body to flee the decimation before him, but anger swelled within King. A mix of emotions swelled within him, and whether it was out of stupidity or something else King took up a broadsword he carried with him. He charged the dragon valiantly swinging his sword and cutting a shallow gash along the dragon's foremost leg. That act drew the dragon's attention as well as its ire. With a great breath, the dragon blew forth a tremendous amount of flames which overtook and killed King. That was not to be the end of him. Thanks to that one in a million spark, as well as the mix of emotions brought on by the tragedy, King ascended that day to become a planeswalker. Becoming aware of his surroundings, he was terribly confused as he stood in the exact spot where his skin was burned off in a flash by the dragon. Even though it had seemed like mere seconds after his brutal death, King had no idea how long he had been standing in the spot. Still surprised that he was alive, he looked over himself and then the surrounding area. Ruins remained. Scorched ruins that left small tendrils of smoke drifting into the night sky. King's gaze fixated on the sky. His eyes seeing more clearly than he could remember. Feeling a strong pull within himself, King began to fade away from his one-time "grave" as he stepped away from Dominaria to 'walk the Multiverse of Dominia. * * * * * * * * * * He had to adjust like every 'walker does. He took time to 'walk the planes and discover more about what he had become. He received tutelage from other planeswalkers he came into contact with. Most notable among them was a 'walker who had an extreme love for mathematics and always took theappearance of a dragon. King also obtained real experience in using magic to defend himself frompredatory 'walkers. Though it took a while, King had a good grasp of the powers at his disposal. Hemade his way back to Dominaria a number of millennia later when Dominiaria was being unified under ahuman king to rid the world of its dragon rulers. The struggle these mortal races were locked in withthe dragons sparked a long lost memory in King as well as anger. The dragon that had killed his entirefamily and taken his life... With intense feelings of emotion flooding his being, King decided tointeract with the people of Dominaria. His goal was nothing less than the death of the dragon if itstill lived; or, at the very least, the death of its offspring. Posing as some street magician who uses smoke and mirrors, King was able to gain an invitation to agathering for many people that the human king ruled over. It was at this gathering that King worked a bit of mind manipulation upon the human king so as to get in with the king's advisors. It was in one such meeting, despite the numerous objections of the advisors to King's presence, that King met five human magi the king had employed to deal with the five of the leading dragons at this time: Rhammidarigaaz, Rith, Treva, Dromar, and Crosis. The five mages, two of which King knows but never speaks their name due to their tragic fate, were charged with the task of stealing the powers of the dragons after having done away with them. King looked upon the three magic who would become instrumental in Dominaria's immediate and long-term future: Kuberr, Lowallyn, and Averru. Though he did not stay among them long, King saw the thirst for power that these mages harbored within their beings. Despite this, it was from these three and the other two magi that King learned of a sixth dragon lord by the name of Maalatr. The magi described the dragon as being brutish and prideful. One distinguishing feature they spoke of was a large, metal bracelet that circled one of the dragon's legs over a gash the dragon kept burning with its own fire. After obtaining the information he wanted, King left the mortals to their machinations while he set out to locate the dragon Maalatr. It took an entire week of traversing a foreign continent, that would eventually develop into Otaria, before King tracked down Maalatr. After annihilating several broods of dragons, King torched a few he left alive for the exact location of Maalatr. To his luck, his final victim, a female dragon, was one of Maalatr's mates. Threatening to destroy her eggs least she be uncooperative, the subdued dragon divulged the location of the dragon lord. King, with the dragon bound by a disabling, black magic spell, held his open hand before the dragon's eyes. A small ball of flame appeared in his hand and grew with each passing second. Before it could touch either King or the dragon, King turned and hurled the ball towards the dragon's nest of eggs. The dragon watched in horror as the ball of flame grew exponentially in size before engulfing her eggs. The dragon, through shear rage, broke part of the spell that bound her. She lifted herself up on her forelegs, keeping her dreadful eyes locked on King. King returned the gaze, looking directly into the dragon's eyes with his own. What the dragon saw was nothing human, but fiery holes were nothing but seething rage burned. From King's eyes two bolts of fiery energy shot forth and impacted the front of the dragon's skull. The dragon collapsed, paralyzed, in front of King. Two, smoldering holes released black smoke from where the fiery spell had breached her skull and fried a part of her brain controlling movement. King looked upon the dragon with his fiery eyes showing not a hint of compassion. The fire left his eyes and, with one last look betraying no emotion, he 'walked from the dragon's lair. The fireball continued to grow in size as the helpless dragon looked on before becoming engulfed in the spell along with the mountain in which she nested. King planeswalked into the still burning heart of a volcano where a lair had been carved out. A menacing red glow lit the entire space due to the lava below that filled the space below where he stood. Upon a large tract of obsidian, King looked upon the form of an uncurling dragon that sensed an unwelcome visitor. Maalatr's eyes looked upon the form of King with no recognition. Instead the only thing the dragon lord's eyes betrayed was nothing short of ignorance and insignificance. Indeed the dragon lord, with the many life times of mortals that had passed, did not recognize King, nor did it care who it was that stood before it. The dragon's eyes narrowed suddenly as realization started to wash over him. The smell of one of his mates was pouring off of King. In a heavy voice that could cute stone, the dragon lord demanded to know who it was that stood before him and why the scent of a mate saturated his unwelcome guest. King simply replied with saying the slayer of your family. No more words were spoken as the dragon lord flew into a rage and engaged King in deadly combat. After a few minutes of what seemed to be intense fighting, King crippled the dragon with a combination of a white spell meant to hobble its target and a green and red spell meant to grant him superior strength and magma like hands. Plunging both his hands into the dragon lord's back, King's magma hands reached deep until he grabbed the bones connecting to the wings of the lord. With a mighty pull, King ripped the now charred bones attached to the dragon lord's wings in a spray of blood, charred flesh, and unparalleled screams. In his final moments of life, Maalatr was approached by King calmly. Laying a hand upon the head of the dragon, King awoke long dead memories of what the dragon had done. King wasn't sure if it was understanding or burning hate, or fear that appeared in Maalatr's eyes, but it did not matter at that point. With his eyes bleeding black power, King reached for Maalatr's head, and let loose over him a nightmarish ooze that clung and spread over Maalatr's body. Feral screams echoed within the volcano as Maalatr was consumed by the horrible, black spell King unleashed upon him. King stood over for a while over the defiled remains of the dragon lord, his eyes no long bleeding any black power. Instead, King's eyes were clear as he contemplated what to do. He ended up taking a sliver of the dragon's bone and imbued it with the essence of the dragon. He made it part of a ring that he wears at all times as a reminder of his origins. Staying upon Dominaria for a few more weeks, King witnessed a change in power over Dominaria. He learned of the demise of the five, great primeevals and how the world had traded five tyrants for three. The human king had been betrayed by the now three brother magi who had usurped the power of Darigaaz, Crosis, and Dromar and killed their fellow brother magi. King, determined to not interfer with the tragic affairs of Dominaria, opted to 'walk and explore the Multiverse some more and check back on Dominaria in a couple thousand years when he was sure that the rule of Averru, Kuberr, and Lowallyn would cease to exist. Turning his back on Dominaria, King 'walked away never to return until the time of the Thran. (More to come later.) |
