ATRIUS

The elf in the shubbery lowers his bow but keeps the arrow nocked and ready to fire. He appears greatly relieved that the Kobolds would rather talk than fight. He stands up and begins to cautiously approach the group by the tree while alternately watching the man coming down the road and the kobolds at the hole in the wall.

"Greetings adventurers, I am Atrius, son of Trebonius, Elf Lord of the forest. I was watching your approach to the castle and realized you were about to be ambushed. I could not stand by and allow you to be attacked. I hope you will forgive me for intruding on your combat."

Atrius realizes he is coming off as awkward and wooden and knows he needs to spend more time with people and less with animals. In a rush of adrenaline he makes a snap decision.

"Perhaps you will let me join your group. I grow tired of the forest and wish to experience the wider world."

The group by the tree stares at the lanky elf, still not sure what to make of the situation. Atrius senses the tension and blurts out:

"I am a ranger of the forest, skilled with bow and blade and have some knowledge of the arcane arts. All I ask is that I get a fair share of the loot."

While waiting for a response, Atrius continues to cover the kobolds and keeps a wary eye on the stranger approaching from the road.

OOC: Spoiler: Show

Atrius is still rattled from his first aborted combat and is very twitchy. He has kept an arrow nocked and if the kobolds do anything aggressive, he will shoot immediately. On the off chance he has to shoot I'll roll attack and damage right now.

Attack with longbow = 1d20+1 = 18

Damage = 1d6 = 4

GREGOR

Upon hearing the name Aleena, Gregor refocuses himself on the task at hand and begins walking toward Garrion. As he makes his stride, he casts a glance in the direction of the shooting shrub (Atrius) with all the confidence he can muster...

"Stay put you botanical miscreant or by The Gods I will call down thunder to smite thee!" (knowing full well that such power is years beyond his reach)

To Garrion "What do you know of Aleena's death, sir? (The sir seems less than genuine in its inflection)."

Gregor, quickly turns in the direction of Sandallan. "What Worms' Tunnel?"

SANDALLAN

Still whispering...

"The worm.  The... the thing.  With the tentacles and the chompy things and the poison that made us go all woozy.  The whatcha-ma-callit.  That lived underground. And ate kobolds.  And had all the silver.  That thing.  We need somewhere to keep the kobolds while we avenge Aleena. I figure we use the hole as a donjon.  Put them in, give them some food so they don't starve.  Put that big door over the hole, load it down with some rocks.  Well let 'em out after we avenge Aleena."

Sandallan nods at the newcomers.

"Um... I'm Sandallan. This is the powerful and pious Gregor the Great.  Up in the tree is the mighty master of magic Baros the Bold and... as far as the kobolds know... there are a good ten others in the woods.  Nice to meet you.  The kobolds haven't told us their names yet.  I'm sure they will once they drop their weapons and come outside!"

Bending stiffly at the waist, Garrion bows to the assembled party.

Well met noble heroes! I am Garrion Tiberius LeValiant of the LeValiant Family. I am very pleased to make your aquaintance! Kobolds you say? Well they can drop their weapons and come out now or I will draw steel and demonstrate the technique for killing kobolds that has been handed down by the LeValiant family for generations!

If it wasn't for the fact that he seems so honest, it would be easy to think that Garrion was making fun. One thing is very clear, it hasn't entered his head that the kobolds could pose him any real danger.

GREGOR

Gregor whispering back to Sandallan "Oh, yeah THAT worm's tunnel! Sandallan I fear the worm has caused permanent damage to my mind."

OOC Thanks Wrecan, edited my post to correct the names. (Still loopy on painkillers).

SANDALLAN

Sandallan nods sympathetically as Gregor.  This isn't the first priest whose been unable to hold his toxins.

"I'm sure it will wear off soon," he says, completely unsure of whether the toxins will ever wear off.

"A pleasure, Lords Atrius and LeValiant," he says to the new arrivals.

Sandallan smiles uneasily as he waits for the kobolds to emerge.

GREGOR

"Indeed, I'm sure it will," he says to Sandallan. "You are a good friend, Sandallan. But please stop talking to the trees, you're encouraging them."

Turning his attention back to Garrion... "If you are indeed here to help, then we gladly accept it. This place appears more treacherous than we first imagined."

Garrion drops his helmet and puts his arms around both Gregor and Sandallan hugging then both.

Then it is agreed that we shall journey forth into the den of the evil one and avenge the poor cleric Aleena! Evil had best give way to our combined might or be beaten down by the fist of our noble cause!

Releasing his new companions from the hug Garrion picks up his dropped helmet and places it on his head. Drawing his sword and strapping on his sheild he takes a step closer to the castle.

Shall I dispatch these kobolds for you?

Baros whispers to Sandallan, "Not a hope. That worm's tunnel would be filled up in no time at all."

Noticing the newcomer approaching the group, Baros blinks, surprised to see another new face so soon after the elf had appeared. For a moment, he wonders if perhaps the two had been keeping tabs on them, but he shrugs off the suspicion when the other man asks why he is in the tree.

Shrugging his shoulders, Baros looks down at the man with a slight smile, trying to be as friendly as possible but unsure how honest he wants to be.

"Oh, you know. Keeping an eye on the lay of the land, monitoring enemy movements... tactical things and the like. "

Allowing Sandallan to introduce him, Baros continues to offer the two men a smile and a welcome.

"Nice to meet you both. It seems you've come not a moment too soon. We could do with an extra pair of brave souls by our side."

Easing out of his perch to rejoin his companions, Baros lowers his voice so the kobolds won't have a hope of hearing him.

"After all, this place is as inviting as a hungry tiger's maw."

Baros winces at Garrion's last question.

"Er... Let's see what they have to say first. Right now they don't seem to want a bloodbath."

We're using standard edition war rules.  No posts of substance.  Do not read the other person's posts with comprehension.  Make frequent comparison to video games, MMOs, and CCGs.  Use the words "fallacy" and "straw man", incorrectly and often.  Passive aggressiveness gets you extra points and asking misleading and inflammatory questions is mandatory.  If you're getting tired, just declare victory and leave the thread.  Wait for the buzzer... and....

Just a quick note on the MMORPG as an insult comparison...

MMORPGs, raking in money by the dumptruck full.  Many options, tons of fans across many audiences, massive resources allocated to development.

TTRPGs, dying product.  Squeaking out an existence that relys on low cost.  Fans fit primarily into a few small demographics.  R&D budgets small, often rushed to market and patched after deployment.

You're not really making much of an argument when you compare something to a MMORPG and assume people think that means bad.  Lets face it, they make the money, have the audience and the budget.  We here on this board are fans of TTRPGs but lets not try to pretend none of us play MMORPGs.

Telling someone to move over a few feet is magical now? :|

I weep for this generation.

Given the laziness and morbid obsesity amongst D&Ders, being able to convince someone to get on their feet, do some heavy exercise, and use their words to make them be healthier must seem magical.

The speaker for the kobolds emerges from the hole in the wall with his hands up, "We's don't trust tall ones.  But, we's goes away and yous can have castle thing.  Full of monsters anyway.  Last tall one go in not come out again."

OOC: Now the question becomes, do you trust the kobolds to keep their word and stay away?
