I actually pulled that bit about Ability Checks from my handy dandy Rules Cyclopedia as the Red Box doesn't cover that particular grey area.  Basically, any time a character wants to try something unexpected, the DM can have the player roll an Ability Check.  If the player rolls at or under the ability score, they succeed.  So, with Sandallan's Charisma check, he needed to roll a 9 or lower.

That's pretty interesting. I have to admit that I love some of those quirky mechanics from the old days (even though that was an RC rule).

Yeah, and now I have no idea what to do next. Gotta love D&D!

Want to know more about the history of D&D, especially how to play older editions of the game? Check out Crazy Monkey's "Tour through the editions":

http://community.wizards.com/crazymonkey/go/forum/view/133793/225799/Asylum_Play-by-Post

The current edition is BECMI, the most popular form of Basic D&D and the adventure is the classic Red Box quest to kill Bargle the evil magic user. Check it out, learn about the games roots, and enjoy the story as it unfolds.

A few clarifications...

Aleena is dead, murdered by a wizard named Bargle, who now has a bounty on his head.

Atrius is the walking shrubbery while Garrion is the fellow walking up from the road.

Assuming we get the kobolds locked away in the carrior crawler's hole, can we assume Kowin, Talmore and Felix stay behind as guards.

Yes, wrecan also pointed that out. I corrected my post. Thanks!
