Heh, no need.  In this case, it is your character that takes precedence.  If we were to to explore the Known World more in a full campaign, I might get a little more picky as a dwarven waraxe is something invented for 3rd Edition (to the best of my knowledge...it may have shown up in a supplement in 2nd Edition at some point).  So, if you were to visit Rockhome, the nation of dwarves, you'd not find a single waraxe.  Artwork from BECMI D&D books generally depict dwarves wielding hammers.

Sorry I'm just hitting the deadline for posting in the IC for mistmere - this happens to be a big push week for work as we are closing in on some deadlines for projects - and my current allocation for the week is at 180%

Not a problem.  Real life always takes precedence.

When you get a chance, don't forget to add your character's thief abilities to your character sheet post in the character roster thread.

Open Locks: 15%
Find Traps: 10%
Remove Traps: 10%
Climb Walls: 87%
Move Silently: 20%
Hide in Shadows: 10%
Pick Pockets: 20%
Hear Noise: 1-2 on 1d6

Backstab: If you can sneak up on a target (usually involving a Move Silently roll and perhaps a Hide in Shadows roll), you can make an attack with a +4 bonus to hit.  If your attack succeeds, you deal double damage (roll damage once and multiply the result by 2).

Josha, are you still with us?

Felix will be treated as a NPC this week.  If Josha does not return after two more updates, Felix will be written out.

A few notes on BECMI combat and monsters...

If you take a peek behind the DM screen on my IC post, you'll notice that I roll the creature's hit points.  Earlier editions didn't have hit points listed for monsters, merely a number of Hit Dice.  DMs were expected to roll creature hit points, either before hand when preparing the adventure, or right then and there during the game for wandering monsters and other unexpected encounters.

So, a group of goblins didn't all have 4 hit points, for example, each member of the group had anywhere from 1 to 7 hit points.  I would often use these numbers when DMing to describe the monsters, with the higher hit point members of the group looking like the strongest and toughest of the bunch.

You'll also notice that only one initiative roll is made for the entire group of PCs.  Combat in BECMI goes team against team, so all the PCs go at the same time, then all the monsters (or vice versa if the monsters win initiative.  As you'll see when we get to the combat sequence, different types of actions happen at different times, however.

One more note...

Wrecan, Mboss77, and Xerxes13, it would be helpful if you could edit your characters' backgrounds into your posts in the Character Roster thread.

Thanks.

First of all, "To those who are about to die, I salute you!"  Laughing

Level 1 BECMI is about as hard as D&D can possibly get. I've lost track of how many characters I've lost just trying to get into that castle.

Next, I love how flavorful all of your characters all. I like that you are all working your rolled ability scores into your character backgrounds, that was something I really missed from 4e. The organic, evolved nature of character creation. Seeing this has really made me rethink my stance against rolled stats in D&D Next (I was supporting point buy as the primary option).

I look forward to seeing how this battle plays out. The thing in the hole is one of my all time favorite D&D monsters because it was the first one I ever fought. It has eaten more of my characters than I can remember, their names now lost to the mists of time.

The current edition is BECMI, the most popular form of Basic D&D and the adventure is the classic Red Box quest to kill Bargle the evil magic user. Check it out, learn about the games roots, and enjoy the story as it unfolds.

CM, I added my background to the roster.

@Style75, thanks for the encouragement!  As fun as it was to confrom Sandallan's character to his rolled stats, I still prefer point buy.  I wanted to play a dwarf.  (I've never gotten to play one.)  But my rolls didn't allow it.  So I'm playing Sandallan, who is a fine character, but I've played the slightly dim fighter plenty of times.

I still support point by as primary - mainly since that would be what was used for encounters, conventions, or LFGR, otherwise they would likely need to go back to the pregens that came with adventurers to ensure the game was balanced and reduce character creation time before an event.

That said, I was never a fan of "pure" random (i.e. 3d6, straight down) - but even that isn't purely random since you have the option to trade in a couple of points from one stat to beef up another, even if the rules on it seem a bit arbitrary.

Preferably I would like to see 3d6, allocate as you choose and then here are 6 points you can increase stats with, the cost being 1 for the first point, 2 for the second, and 3 for the third (ensuring no one gets more than a +3 total)

but that's a complete different discussion

I usually use point buy, but I am starting to like arrays. Some of my regular players tend to min max and it creates a power differential between people that spread their points out more evenly for RP purposes. Since we spend the most time in combat, it makes these min maxers seem too powerful. I am thinking about swapping to arrays to limit this. My other idea is using point buy, but making 18 the maximum starting limit, and 20 is the limit after level 1.
