This thread is for Out of Character discussion of the Tour through the Editions play-by-post games.  Discuss anything related to the game in this thread.  We can also use this thread for player introductions and general banter.

Welp, you said this is the thread for discussion, so here it goes...

"...If you have a high Prime Requisite, you earn bonus experience points. If your PR is low, you take an XP penalty."

Really?! :O  What is the variance of these numbers? Does this cause long games to slowly fall apart do to a gap in player XP? From my experience in RPGs (both table top and video game) touching the flow of XP is crazy bad idea, like Item Familiar in 3.5. I'm… baffled by such a thing. Baffled, but not complaining. Tis how it was, and so how it should be for the tour. I guess the fallacy in my thinking is "in my experience." Was this too original for them to of predicted things like messing with XP flow = bad? Does a rule like this exist in 1e/2e?

The game hasn't even started and I already find this interesting. :3  I game design.

What I think the Wilder Design Goals should be.
Psionic Homebrew Mk2! Changed core, Focus Points, Psionic Potentials, stuff! Very basic core stuff. :P

I'm working on a homebrew Wilder, and so a homebrew Psionics system. Here's a 3 part post with info on where I am in the design process.

Welcome and ask away.  :D

Each class has a different experience point table, for starters.  So, for example, in order to reach level 2, each class needs...

Cleric: 1500 XP
Fighter: 2000 XP
Magic-user: 2500 XP
Thief: 1200 XP
Dwarf: 2200 XP
Elf: 4000 XP
Halfling: 2000 XP

These differing rates of level gain were the primary means of balancing characters in BECMI.  An elf, being able to both cast spells and fight almost as well as a fighter, had a very slow rate of advancement compared to the other classes.  Each class gains spells, fighting ability, thief abilities, etc at different rates, so that a 6th level thief is probably balanced against a 5th level magic-user (both at 20,000 experience points).

1st edition and 2nd edition both had varying level advancement between classes as well as Prime Requisite rules (though they differ slightly from what is presented below).

As for Prime Requisite bonus XP, those numbers look like this.

3-5: -20%
6-8: -10%
9-12: No adjustment
13-15: +5%
16-18: +10%

This serves as a sort of "survival of the fittest" mechanism.  It was really sort of expected that characters with low scores wouldn't fare very well in the adventuring life and die early in their career.  Players back then expected this to a certain degree and rolled up a new character when their first (or second, or third) PC died.  It was also a nod toward simulation.  Adventuring is supposed to be a very hazardous lifestyle with a very high mortality rate.  Only the best manage to survive and, sometimes, succeed.

Does this mean that a Dwarf with 16 Str needs 2420 EXP to get to level 2?

The opposite.  You need only 1,980 XP (if I did the math right)

Its a bit more accurate to say that the dwarf gets more XP and therefore gets to 2200 faster.

So, for example, if the group gains 1000 XP, Sandallan will gain that exact amount, 1000, while Darius would gain 1100 XP.

Another 1000 XP and both characters will gain a level, despite Darius needing 200 more XP to do so than Sandallan does.

Haha, that's mean. I'm intrigued. Harsh survival is something I've pondered a bit before (both in and out of survival horror style) and it's defiantly something I've never really gotten a taste of, even in 3.5. I like underdog characters, so having the odds legitimately stacked against me is will be fun. This is assuming I roll mediocre or bad of course, which my money's on mediocre. I'm one of those people who never rolls 1s or 20s, just all midrange rolls. (Although, a just for fun test got me 12,10,9,8,14,13, so maybe I shouldn't talk.)

I can now see why a lot of people liked multiclassing or dual classing or whatever it was called in older editions. Having honky tonk XP progression fits right in with everything else.

What I think the Wilder Design Goals should be.

That EXP Bonus seems like it breaks the balance between 2 Characters with the same class. High Str Fighter is better than low Str Fighter AND HE LEVELS FASTER. Sucks to be the little guy.

Indeed.  It is a system that favors the strong, so to speak.

I have implemented a few house rules over the years to compensate, though we'll be sticking to "RAW" here.

Is it too early to sign up for 4th edition?

I am one of those who's played every edition before 4th, but never played 4th. My reasoning was it didn't look like D&D to me, but as I've participated in the playtest I have felt more and more that I'm probably wrong. I never even gave it a chance, and I'm one of those "Try it before you knock it" types. I had plenty of opportunities too, but now, when I actually want to try it out, I only know those playing 3.5.

There are so many things that are pulled from 4th edition in Next that I absolutely love that it's got to be worth playing. My absolute favorite change in DDN so far is the at-will spells for magic users. This came from 4th, no doubt. I've long told everyone, "Sure it looks fun, but its not for me." I still stand by that it's probably fun, but I'm starting to think that it was for me after all, only I was too blinded by my love of 3.5e to see.

I'm sure it will be a while before you get there, but how and when can I sign up? I definitely want to try it out!
Do you have an opinion on what campaign settings should be printed in D&D Next? If so, please cast your votes in this poll!

Poll: What campaign settings do you want to see printed in D&D Next?
