Today was our first full session of gaming with our four kids. At the beginning of the day, everyone chose one game from our shelves and we wrote all those choices on an index card and put them in a hat, from which the game we would play that day would be chosen. Three votes for "Red Box" D&D, Three votes for Lego Games: Ramses Pyramid. I drew D&D out of the hat (which made me happy, though I would've been content with the Lego game also). We had an unexpected fifth player when my daughter's friend came over, but it resulted in a new D&D convert, so all is well. I decided to run the solo adventure in which you create your character as a group endeavor to get all the kids familiar with creating characters, rolling dice, and making choices. In the coming weeks, Monkey will be sharing his experiences with two different gaming styles on a relatively weekly basis. 1. Gaming with the kids - The plan (but we parents know that plans never survive contact with kids) is to start up a D&D Essentials campaign, starting with the Red Box, moving on to Reavers of Harkenwold (the adventure included in the Essentials DM's Kit) and playing it by ear from there. However, we also gave each of the kids a custom built (by us, the parents) deck of Magic cards from our old collection and we plan on doing a few family tournaments. And, we also got a bunch of casual games like Farkle and Skip-bo. And every week, we'll be letting the decision of what games to play be decided by a vote. But regardless, Monkey will be blogging ... |
