[[Wee Hours]] - A Pablobian Set

Welcome to Tulovre. A world upside-down. Here, Oxen, Squid, and Wolves politely sip tea while reading poetry. Bears attend the opera. Crocodiles don dressing gowns before they step into the morning sun. Beasts are far from wild.

Yet there is a menace beyond the quiet walls that surround cities. Within the jungles, forests, deserts, and wild lands - there dwell the tormenters of civilization: man. Yes, humans and their ilk - elves, dwarves, goblins, orcs, merfolk, and more - race naked through the branches. They hunt and kill each other with bare hands and yellow teeth. They have no language. They have no knowledge. They are instinctual creatures who live to kill, eat, and breed.

The bad lands are hardly a bounty of fresh meat however. Almost no big game. The Giants have been hunted nearly to extinction. The great fleshy creatures that these humanoids desire live inside houses, in towns, and behind walls. And so, the raids occur.

Wee Hours is the First Set in Tulovre Block. Please enjoy.

The setting immediately reminded me of Planet of the Apes, which is a very good thing. Can't wait to see the cards!

You shall both obtain your wish.

So, I'm having trouble designing mechanics for this. It's been a while since I set on this sort of endeavor. Let's see if I can get any opinions on this:

Toast-Trunks
Creature - Elephant Citizen (C)
Combat Civil (This creature cannot be the target of spells or abilities before Combat begins.)

"You want to do what to me? Before breakfast?"

3/3

I sorta don't like it. Because I'm not a big fan of Hexproof, and Shroud is okay, but it isn't my favorite. This set is also going to have a Cycle theme and a Phase theme, so. . .

Edit: Thanks Fenix.. PotA is one of my favorite things. I found this sick Dr. Zaius action figure in an antique store the other day! It was so bad-ass. 35 Dollars though. And I was there for not me. So cool though.

Magnificent!

139359831 wrote:

So it can be effected during your second main phase? I agree with you about shroud/hexproof. In my opinion, hexproof should have a additional cost, but usually doesn't. Shroud had a different design space. Hexproof just has no downside. Anyways... combat civil is okay imo. A little specific, but definetly fits.

An idea?: Cooperative (Spells and abilities that target this cost less.) Or make it Cooperative x (Cost less.)

EDIT: Cooperative was meant to be spells and abilities you control that target this.
Pogo: The Set

120.6. Some effects replace card draws.
Oh, god. Pogo, PotA - all the things I loved as a little lad.

Combat Civic is just an example. There would also be Main Phase Civil (blech), Upkeep Civil, End Civil, and more specific ones like Damage Civil and Blocking Civil.

139359831 wrote:

Kicker Variant:

Cannibalism
Instant
Destroy target creature. Target creature that shared a type with that creature gets +6/+6 until end of turn.
Reckless Abandon - You may cast this spell with Reckless Abandon. If you do, double all digits and add "Sacrifice it at the beginning of the next endstep if able."

"It is not wise to consume the flesh of your kin."
- Forgotten Words

Not entirely happy with it, but. . . Well, I want something that can span all colors. I guess I can see this everywhere. Even Blue. I'm also worried about Commons, but let's see. Common Blue RA card comin' up:

The Secrets in the Tide
Sorcery
Draw 1 card and tap target land you control.
Reckless Abandon - You may cast this spell with Reckless Abandon. If you do, double all digits and add "Sacrifice it at the beginning of the next endstep if able."

"They dig at the sand with their filthy hands day after day. What do they seek. One wishes only for a brief glimpse into their primitive minds."
- Excerpt from the notes of Sir Avion Makinet, Kraken Anthropologist

So, in addition to Humans, Elves, and other Humanoids, things like Sphinxes and Angels are also Wild. I just wanted to add that. I should come up with a complete list of species on the plane at some point.

I think I want four original mechanics. Two for the Wild. Two for the Civilized.

Still contemplating them. I'm going to pause the finishing of this post to quietly consider the options before me.

How about this?

Reason: If you have more cards in your hand than each of your opponents, effect.

It could also be library. . .

But, let's say:

Novice of Tactics
Creature - Oxen Soldier
Defender
Reason: If you have more cards in your hand than each of your opponents, Novice of Tactics does not have Defender and has First Strike instead.

"Education is a weapon deadlier than the sharpest steel."

2/4

I sorta like Library more for this. Flavour-wise.

Oh dear... Wild angels? And all this talk of uncivilized clothing... Oh my...

I like the theme, but the mechanics so far seem to unorthodox and  questionably balanced (+12/+12 on turn 3, instant speed?)

Its like you are the happy version of Bankai_Mastery :P
Some wording mistakes on your example cards reveal how there's not as much design space for your "reckless abandon" mechanic as you would expect, because you can't sacrifice your opponent's permanents and you can't use the number one because of singular / plurals.. It's pretty clever, but I'm afraid this mechanic doesn't have too much potential! >.<
nice opening
start at the beginning with 1 drops and work you're way up
What about wild "super" vanillas. Like a 2/2 for one. Or.... (drawback keyword here) Savagery (This creature can't be the target of spells or abilities you control.) Then you could have...

Giant Holdout
Creature - Giant
Savage
He has survived till now by being the strongest, fastest, and most barbaric.
9/9

Magnificent!

Glorious!

I am not a fan of the mechanic on the elephant card, it's too hexproofy for my tastes :s

WildWumpus: Ha ha! Well, that was just an example. I'm not sure that it is really as broken as you think, though. I assume you'd be playing with, hmmm, Constructs? Or maybe Myr. But anyway, something colorless and cheap. And then you have to get at least two of them onto the field. Sac both to do what? 13 damage? I mean, yeah, it's a heavy blow, but it leaves you with nothing and it is very difficult to pull off. I doubt Modern/Legacy would have a hard time dealing with this combo. But the point was the mechanic, not the card itself. Those can be tempered. I really like the Bankai comment, but with a join date of five days ago and 30 posts under your belt, it seems oddly out of place.

Cats: Uh-oh. That's why I added "if able" to the Sac clause. I will do my best to convince you otherwise because, out of the few that I made yesterday, it is my favorite.

Matt: Hmm. That's not really how I do things, but thanks buddy!

dtolle: I'm not really a fan of the lack-of-interaction mechanics. I'm not really that into the Civil mechanic that I made yesterday. Plus, targetting your own creatures is something that isn't really that big of drawback. Plenty of aggro decks don't do that already.

Fenix.: I know. I'm trying to think of something better. Maybe during the phase - like "Combat Civil: During Combat spells that target this creature cost less" or something. I dunno. I have to go do something and I'm probably late now! I'll think about it while I'm doing "something!"

Was that a bit too intimate? 【・ヘ・?】

"Its controller sacrifices this permanent at the beginning of his or her next end step." That would make spells possible where you destroy something your opponent controls (the more common effect!) and comes with a little delay to make the regular effects of these spells more relevant.. If you insist on playing with numbers, this mechanic should just increase them by some value or double only the first number in the rules text, otherwise it's really close to just copying the spell once.. Jay-Z needs comments, too! :3
Well super vanillas could represent humanoids who are to savage to have special abilities. The savage keyword was meant to represent the incooperation of the savage races. It does limit your ability to use combat tricks and such. Its up to you, your set.
Wumpus: Wat?

Cats: Yeah, well, they're going to have secondary effects. "Doubling the first number in the rules text" seems clunky. I sorta like the copy though. . . Which color didn't I do yet? White. Okay.

Soldiers with Swords
Instant (C)
Create a 2/2 White Soldier token.
Reckless Abandon - You may cast this spell with Reckless Abandon. If you do, add "Sacrifice it at the beginning of the next endstep if able," then copy it.

"Sacrifices must be maids."

I dunno even know.

Anyway. Trying to think of other mechanics. Playing around with literacy, and of course the variety ill-. Can't think of anything.

Wait. Maybe something like Unleash? Instead "Skilled."

Citizen of the Settlements
Creature - Rhino Citizen
Skilled (You may have this creature enter the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it. It can activate its abilities as long as it has a -1/-1 counter on it.)
: Target creature becomes indestructable until end of turn.

"I may not be as strong as some of the pack, but my armor can stand up to any horn, claw, or finger."

2/3

Is it clear that you cannot activate that ability if CotS is Unskilled? I'm not huge into this either, but I do like the idea of spells with Rules text like: "Destroy target Unskilled creature."

139359831 wrote:

What if skilled let you activat the ability more? Like if this is skilled, you may pay instead of costs to activate this cards abilities?
Skilled (When you tap this creature to activate one of its abilities for the first time each turn untap it.)

Does that work?

Perfect originality is overrated and often ugly. The best and most beautiful cards I've ever seen were clearly inspired by something else. Cards are not entirely unlike living organisms in this regard. All the good ones are a result of long evolution; the 'original' ones are either monocellular or mutant aberrations.

Okay, sure. Dtolle, you get both my admiration and jealousy.

The thought was crossing my mind, but I was sorta stuck on the Unleashed thing. Like the original idea I had was "You may have this enter the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it. If you do, its activated abilities cost less to activate." Then my second was "Blah, blah, blah. . if you do, its activated abilites can be activated by tapping instead of paying their costs." But that simple solution is just exactly what I needed. Thank you both.

So I think I might also have Sub- and Mini-game theme. Cards that have actual subgames on them (brief ones). And cards that change the way you play for a minute. Like emulating King of the Hill, and Capture the Flag.

Capture the Flag
Sorcery
Each player creates an Artifact Token named Escutcheon of Pride with "Creatures you control have +1/+1." End the turn.
The next time a creature deals combat damage to a player, that creature's controller gains control of each copy of Escutcheon of Pride on the battlefield.

Something like that. And others too.

But anyway, I still have to think up at least two more mechanics. What about this?

Green Instinct (Each player plays with the top card of his or her library revealed. For each Green card revealed this way, this creature gets +1/+1.)

To represent those heightened senses? Again, I'm not entirely happy with it, but it might be cool. I'm thinking of a cycle of half-breeds, like this fellow:

Dwelf
Creature - Dwarf Elf
Elf Instinct (Each player plays with the top card of his or her library revealed. For each Elf card revealed this way, this creature gets +1/+1.)
Dwarf Instinct (Each player plays with the top card of his or her library revealed. For each Dwarf card revealed this way, this creature gets +1/+1.)

1/1

Aw! I like him!

Well, allowing creatures to become tapped twice often does the same thing as doubling the power of their tapping abilities, unless they're strong enough to be interested in attacking instead of activating their tapping abilities once more.. Your "skilled" creatures should either have relevant power + toughness or tapping abilities to make themselves more dangerous, because otherwise they would just use their tapping abilities right away the second time.. Your "instinct" mechanic seems pretty narrow and should care about your top card of your library in many different ways, hopefully some of them being more different to similar mechanics on printed cards..

I feel the warm glow of accomplishment. Thank you for the nod. I was inspired by the idea.
Thanks Cats, I know. Although with additional costs, power levels can be controlled easily. Hmm, good point about Instinct. You think I should switch it up from the +1/+1 to different things? I wonder about how you feel regarding printed mechanics. A lot of the Ravnican ones were probably pretty narrow by your standards, eh?

Let's see, let's see. I need another one that's more in line with the aristocratic persona I see the beasts having. Hmmm. What about "Class?"

I could have three Classes maybe and well, I could go "Upper", "Middle", and "Lower" but honestly that sounds lame. Maybe I could just have a First Class. Yeah, that seems more elegant anyway.

"Aristocracy" would probably be the word I might go with. Because then I get Black kill spells that say things like "Destroy target member of the Aristocracy." Oooh, "Socialite" is totally going to be a creature type. So, well, what does Aristocracy do? Well, let's consider. Aristocrats make art, music, they're politicians, business(wo)men, and the wealthy. They possess things - lots of things. Hmmm.

Aristocracy - At the beginning of your upkeep, this Aristocrat may gain possession of a TYPE. If it does, EFFECT?

So, Aristocracy sorts of lends itself to Rares and Legends but I think I could make some commons too. When I began imagining this, I began doing so by picturing a hydra with so many tophats, so that's the first card I'll make, but then I'll try to do a common one as well.

Seven-Headed Propertarian
Creature - Hydra Magnate
Trample
Aristocracy - At the beginning of your upkeep, this Aristocrat may gain possession of a Land. If it does, put a +1/+1 counter on it.

"Land is the only investment that will always be valuable. Its worth may decrease, I may lose a head - but in both situations, it will grow back."

7/7

Let's see then:

Trotting Hooves
Creature - Horse Socialite (C)
Defender
Aristocracy - At the beginning of your upkeep, this Aristocrat may gain possession of an aura. If it does, it loses Defender until end of turn.

"Inspiration is rarer than gold."

2/3

You can only have Aristocrats gain possession of things you control. And they can't gain possession of things they already possess.

mark it with a coin

does possesion change the way bthe permenent is handled ?

the aura could move to the aristocrat
... Huh... I would actually like to see this set as a official release...
What does a card having possesion of a card type mean though? Do you control that object? It is a neat idea though.
