M14 Flavor Thread

Setting slivers and their odd and poorly explained appearance on Shandalaar aside for a moment; let's talk about the fun flavor that M14 brings to the table.

We have a new Chandra and her gauntlet.  That's pretty neat.  I hope that we'll see her goggles soon.  Also we have a nice new flavorful Voltron combo in Bogbrew Witch, Bubbling Cauldron, and Festering Newt.  The best part being that this team may be good enough to see at least a little Constructed play.  We finally get to see what Hydras look like on Shandalaar....and they are impressive.

@mikemearls The office is basically empty this week, which opens up all sorts of possibilities for low shenanigans

@mikemearls In essence, all those arguments I lost are being unlost. Won, if you will. We're doing it MY way, baby.

@biotech66 aren't you the boss anyway? isn't "DO IT OR I FIRE YOU!" still an option?

@mikemearls I think Perkins would throat punch me if I ever tried that. And I'd give him a glowing quarterly review for it.

It is an interesting thing going with newt, witch, and cauldron. Interesting flavor. And we also have a witchhunter wolf too... A very odd looking one.

(Not sure how to link this to the forum page from an iPhone.)
Correction to my last post. Witchstalker not Witch hunter.
Sweeeet I waited long enough that someone else did this for me.

I would victory dance but I'm too lazy.

It's so weird that witches in Magic feel... well... weird. But they do. But this is so cool regardless.

The set has a Giant Whale that swallows things whole. I don't think I need anything else, except to make a angry sea creature EDH deck.

I'l still not sold on Slivers, and the Witch does feel weird. I'm not a huge fan of specifically spelled out combos, but whatever.

After the official forums lost most of their functionality, a once vibrant community of Vorthos was wiped out.The survivors founded a new place to discuss all things concerning with the art, flavor and storylines of Magic: The Gathering. Come join us.

I wish that witches had more of a unifying mechanical identity.  Cuombajj Witches, being the eldest, didn't really leave a good jumping off point for the tribe.  Compound that with their inability to actually be a tribe (being made of a mix of Spellshapers, Wizards, Shamans, and Clerics); we just never got a good distillation of what a witch should be in the game of Magic.  I really like the idea of having their mechanical identity linked to tutoring vermin like rats, cats, bats, newts, etc. from your deck for nefarious purposes.  The Witch tribe strikes me as the sort to really benefit from having their "familiars" around with them.  Also, if curses come back, I'd be down for more Witch/Curse interaction.

I wonder if this is just exclusive to Chandra or all of the Lorwyn 5 present are going to have a card like that. Now, where be that Garruk's Hot Bodeh card.

When I looked over at Salvation and saw "Witch" on the card title I had fears that they're going to go with the sexualized route, thank goodness it went to the more old school approach.
Really liking the fauna: whales, newts, condors. It finally answered many of the questions I had abut animals in which colours, though condors in just seems a tad wrong.

I wouldn't think too much of it.

I'd wager Condor was chosen to make it stand out more than the typical bird of prey that's usually used for birds.
The further we get in, the more I can tell this set was someone's first foray into it as lead designer.

Besides that, this one is twice as weird as m13, which already suffered severe schizophrenia and manic-depression.
This set, overall, doesn't even have the charm of that. At least m13 seemed like it had a little bit more classic resonance, but m14 is extremely oddball, and honestly a LOT of the cards I just straight up don't like.

It's very similar to what I had to say in the Tavern.

For me, the best core set they've produced was m12. It had a great deal of the classic resonance while still doing unique things that felt magic.

Not much of an issue. The game can just as easily introduce the Witch creature Type and update all the Witch creatures to be part of that Tribe.

Witches could have an animal familiar like Spiders, Rats, Frogs, and Snakes for example.

One way to do Witch and Familiar is the Soulbound Mechanic and just have the Witch pair up with the choice creature type. Vice Versa to make a few familiar creatures then they can pair up with what ever the Witch creature type is.

Familiar "Creature Type" (You may pair this creature with another unpaired "Creature Type" creature when either enters the battlefield. They remain paired for as long as you control both of them.)
soulbond and pairing tested REALLY poorly from what I gather.
It was far too complex mechanically for what they were aiming to do, and as a consequence, there's no way it'd end up as an evergreen either.
Which if you were going to use witches, you'd need the evergreen availability.

Any mechanic more complex than "Gets bigger" is too difficult to whatever drooling morons WotC polls for complexity.

That's kind of icky considering the 20 years of precedent of witches not being a consistently defined term.

Seems complex and narrow. Can't imagine that being a persistant thing across multiple settings.

Could I get a source for that?

And I'm going to side with Jivan on this; I can't imagine a scenario where souldbond was confusing that couldn't be easily remidied by reading the bloody reminder text.

I like the new Haunted Plate Mail, but other than that I also haven't seen much that makes me smile spontaneously, no. Sorta fearing to browse the spoilers, actually.

A lot of the art is really off too.
It's something to do with the pallete and shapes they're utilizing in this set rather than the actual art by and large.
Though Opportunity is just bad. The hard geometrics with such a cool tone against the softer organics used is horrendous.
I thought soulbond was the best thing (mechanically) to come out of Avacyn Restored. I wouldn't be surprised to see them bring it back at some point.

But yeah, not evergreen.
D&D rules were never meant to exist without the presence of a DM. RAW is a lie.
Yeah, I'm not remembering that it polled terribly... I think it was a little complex for some people, but it wasn't a catastrophe or a deal-breaker for a return...

I'd have to dig through Blogatog though to double check, and I really don't want to do that.

It's probably too complex for evergreen, though, yeah.

I like the card effect a lot.

One of the more dynamic pieces in the set, IMO.

Keeper!
Go all art critic on it!
I like it when you disect things~
Man I'm not sure what to say really. It's a really cool design and the art reflects the card's effect really well. There's almost this moment of hope in the second part of the image--almost like she could pull the sword out and be healed all white mana style--but in the last part it's clear that what made her human is gone. I love the transformation of the red blood into black tendrils, too. From tragedy to horror, sort of. Going more sort of to the surrealist end of the scale with this card was a really, really good choice. Also, can we talk about how her armor is super practical and reasonable looking even though she's still clearly feminine? That's really solid design, and it plays well into the overall feel of this piece--this isn't a big bombastic moment of magic; it's, like I said, a transformation of tragedy into horror. It's very Pre-Raphaelite, in a way--not overstated, very medieval in design, not oversexualized and contorted like the Frazetta school of fantasy art, it's just a quiet depiction of a moment in a story, the way the Pre-Raphaelites love showing the Lady of Shalott floating peacefully downstream...

Well crap I guess I figured out what to say, huh?

I bet this piece polls terribly, incidentally.

Yeah, I really, really was impressed by that. It's such a minor part of the painting, but it's kind of a big deal. I feel like there's this idea that you can't express femininity without awkwardly sexualized armor and this shows that you definitely can.

It's also a piece that unequivocably shows a woman being killed, but there's a totally different feel from the kind of stuff we feminazis talk about when we're talking about Violence Against Women In Media. It's... hm, it's kind of hard to codify, I think, but if I was to take a stab at it (sorry sorry sorry sorry) I'd say it's the fact that she not swooning over dramatically--she's a knight, a soldier, even when she's staggering around with a sword stuck right through her. There's nothing to indicate in posture or tone or composition that she is lesser. Like I said, it's definitely a feel thing, and it's tough to codify, but it's there.

Reasonable and practical lady armor is totally my fetish.

I love that more and more angel pieces show them with varied, colored wings, incidentally. That's a cool thing that's happening. White wings all the time gets old after a while. :P

It's that her death isn't being highlighted or downplayed because of her gender.
She died, and it sucks because she was a person, with goals and dreams and a personality and all that's gone now.
Not "she died, and it sucks because it makes her brother/father/boyfriend angry."

Well that would be fairly abominable now wouldn't it.

I will echo that MaRo has talked about soulbond being confusing to people, though not what specific about it, but I also do not have links. It may have to do with the introduction of "pair" embedded in the already new keyword and how soulbond creatures can pair and re-pair, unlike Auras which stick.

I love that more and more angel pieces show them with varied, colored wings, incidentally. That's a cool thing that's happening. White wings all the time gets old after a while. :P

Yes, I love the red coverts. I showed it to a friend and he said it looked multicolored. I wish there were more varied palettes, though I understand the visual cues.

I sort of agree, but also believe that not every race needs depth as a whole. I'm fine with goblins being ruled by comically overblown stupidity. Now beasts are a creature type with 0 depth OR humor.

Occassionally the flavor text writers remember that a race has more than one characteristic, and I think they need to pay those particular writers more.
You know what would've made that flavor text interesting? If it had been human generals rather than goblin generals using them as cannon fodder...

Kind of would put things in a different light, no?

Hm, one of these days I should resurrect the Planeswalker Contest character I made that was a goblin general attempting a mass migration of goblins across the multiverse to a suitable plane where they could be forever free of exploitation by other races... That idea really lodged in my head, and I'd love to return to it at some point.

I'm getting distinctly irritated by things like Goblin Diplomats and Imposing Sovereign.
The lack of a class is, at the very least, bothersome, but it's further annoying in that they have classes they could have given them.

Admittedly, I really wish they'd ressurect the Lord creature type.
