A quick question regarding shock trooper

Can you use the heedless charge maneuver from shock trooper well mounted? A freind of mine is working on an enemy NPC, and isn't quite sure if you need to be on foot to use it. reading up on mounted combat it would seem to me that you do since you get all the benefits and negatives of charging well on horse back, and the feat itself doesn't distinguish from being on foot or otherwise well charging.

What say you?
I think the issue with it is that it's actually the mount charging, rather than yourself.  You can't perform your own charge since you're seated in place on your mount.

Whether or not that's judged to be right or wrong, it seems to be the crux of the matter.

Zauber's Mutable Rod: This rod has a number of useful functions that make it easier to live in the wilderness. It is made of polished wood, with five studlike buttons on one end. Each button produces a different effect when pressed. Unless otherwise noted, the rod’s functions have no limit on the number of times they can be employed. When button 1 is pressed, one end of the rod produces a small flame, equivalent to a candle. When button 2 is pressed, the rod unfolds into a two-person tent, complete with bedrolls and warm blankets. When button 3 is pressed, the rod becomes a one-handed hammer, suitable for pounding pitons into a wall. When button 4 is pressed, the rod becomes a sturdy iron spade. When button 5 is pressed, the rod becomes a wooden bucket able to hold 2 gallons of liquid. Once per day, it can be commanded to fill with fresh water. If the rod is seriously damaged or broken in any of its alternate forms (button 2, 3, 4, or 5), it reverts to its basic rod form and cannot be activated for 24 hours. Moderate conjuration; CL 9th; Craft Rod, minor creation; Price 375 gp; Weight 2 lb.
That's the hiccup I was thinking about. Mounted charging doesn't seem to be very thoroughly worded. In the instance of charging with a lance in the section on mounted combat, they refer to the weapon wielder as a "mounted charger" implying that the person riding the mount is in fact counted as charging, however it also says that "If your mount moves more than 5 feet, you can only make a single melee attack. Essentially, you have to wait until the mount gets to your enemy before attacking, so you can’t make a full attack". Maybe there's something in the rules compendium that'll help clear this up, but I don't happen to have one handy at the moment. >.<

Combat while Mounted

With a DC 5 Ride check, you can guide your mount with your knees so as to use both hands to attack or defend yourself. This is a free action.

When you attack a creature smaller than your mount that is on foot, you get the +1 bonus on melee attacks for being on higher ground. If your mount moves more than 5 feet, you can only make a single melee attack. Essentially, you have to wait until the mount gets to your enemy before attacking, so you can’t make a full attack. Even at your mount’s full speed, you don’t take any penalty on melee attacks while mounted.

If your mount charges, you also take the AC penalty associated with a charge. If you make an attack at the end of the charge, you receive the bonus gained from the charge. When charging on horseback, you deal double damage with a lance.

It seems to me that, while mounted, you still (technically) count as the one who is charging (one attack (due to "charge's" 10ft. minimum), AC penalty, attack bonus). Thus, the way I read it, you would be able to apply any "extra" abilities to the charge as well (Shock Trooper, Pounce, various TOB manuevers, etc.).

Bold bit is key. Technically you aren't charging, but you take the AC penalty when your mount charges. If you decide to attack at the end of a mount's charge, you gain the bonuses recieved from charging - which for you include Shock Trooper.

A strident DM would point out that "the bonus gained from the charge" is logically distinct from "the bonus gained from charging", and that the former only means the mount's benefits transfer up to you, but this leads to some silly results if you, say, are riding a dire tiger. Just because the tiger can pounce doesn't mean you're able to do a full attack at the end of that.

Keep things simple: basically, a mounted charge just swaps your mount's speed and space for your own. It's still "you" doing the charge for most practical purposes.

Cancer prognosis: I am now cancer-free.
