New player learning how to draft? Pftffft

Hello i've been playing mtg for about a month and recently went onto mtgo. There are no FNM's even remotely close to where i live so i thougt id get into drafting on MTGO. And man i loved it, until i ran out of money that is. As a student i cant afford losing drafts, and since im new to tcgs and have never drafted before ever, i lost 5 drafts in a row. on day one of being on mtgo i spent 40$ on drafting alone and i doubt anyone can keep that amount rolling. I wonder, how can i become better at RTR block drafting without spewing out money on it? As i see things there are no way for me as a new player to practice current block drafting. This is really frustrating since i really want to become better, but i can only draft like 4 times per month
also, why are there no phantom rtr block DRAFTS? sure there are phantom sealed but that's not the same thing at all. What would the harm be in giving away 1 free phantom draft per day?
Unfortunately, there really is no way to get better at drafting that to just draft.  You can read all the articles you want, watch all the videos/streams you want, but without actual practice, you don't really improve.

Draft is also just going to cost you money.  It's never going to be cheap.  All you can really do is minimize your losses and maximize your playing time.  Are you playing in the Swiss queues?  If not, you should be since you get 3 games out of one draft.  If you are, make sure you review why you didn't do as well.

On top of that, you're picking a very bad format to learn how to draft with.  This block is insanely complicated, and even this late into the format, there is no consensus on the "best" strategy.

With all that said, I'd recommend doing your research.  You will learn a lot by watching streams (check out Twitch.tv), reading articles, watching recorded videos (DraftMagic.com, ChannelFireball.com, StarCityGames.com, etc.) and other non-playing activities.  Don't neglect the non-draft content.  Just because you're not playing Standard/Modern/Legacy, doesn't mean you can't learn more about just playing the game.

As for not having Phantom events, my guess is that it's because drafts are relatively "cheap".  Compared to the $25+ it costs you to play sealed (6 packs at $4 plus some number of tickets), $14(ish) to draft isn't much.  You can probably also save money by buying your packs off the classified section instead of from the Wizards store.  You should also be picking up any valuable cards (again, see the classified section) you see during the draft to get something back even if you don't win packs.  Finally, if you absolutely do not ever want to play constructed, sell off the cards you draft after the draft completes.  You'll get some tickets back, which means you get to draft again sooner.
Alright thanks for the help. I do watch lsv and conley draft at channel fireball, and ocassionaly watch a stream (numotthenummy), i have been playing 4-3-2-2 drafts but wont do that anymore ^^, While i dont want to flame at wizards, but it seems like this business model is actively pushing away new players from drafting? The skill level of players i have met have been differing very much, from new people like me to those scary guys that always seems to get out a creature every round and constantly have an answer to everything you do. So to sumarize your post, there are no shortcuts to becoming better at drafting. If my only option is to prioritize mtgo over clothes, food, misc, to become better at it really turns me off. And yes i know im no special snowflake that should get special treatment, if everyone has to pay to play over and over again that's the way of things i guess. That's a rather volatile business model imo :P
Or you could just practice moderation...  I mean, you don't have to be insanely good at drafting.  It's not a requirement for a job or school or anything.  Magic is a game, and no one is saying you have to spend a ton of money on it.

Why don't you try playing constructed?  Specifically Pauper.  It's cheap (decks are like $20ish maybe less) and you don't have to constantly spend money to do it (outside entry fees).  Trying to do Limited events on a small budget is just wasting money...

I would recommend checking out some other streams.  I've never been impressed with Numot's play or draft skills when I've watched him.  I tend to follow a lot of the pros, though most of them don't stream on a regular basis.  I would recommend watching Dzyl, as he is extremely good at the game.  Micheal Jacobs (Darkest_Mage) is decent as well, though a bit abrasive.
i have been playing 4-3-2-2 drafts but wont do that anymore ^^

Especially when just starting out you should definitely be doing Swiss drafts. There is math that has been done numerous times that basically shows you should never really be playing 4-3-2-2. If your win rate is at or below 50% you should be playing swiss, and if you are above that you should be playing 8-4 because the payouts for Swiss and 8-4 are just better. Also, playing Swiss allows you to play three matches every draft regardless of how you do. 4-3-2-2 and 8-4 are single elimination and so you won't get as much experience playing with the cards so you can figure out what kind of decks work and what kind don't and make better card evaluations. In the subesquent rounds of Swiss, you will also get paired down with someone else that has the same record as you and have a better shot at winning some packs which will reduce the cost of your next draft.

In addition to excellent advice given by previous posters, I think I should add that pretty soon (in a few months) M14 will be coming to MtGO. That will in all probability be a good chance to learn the basics of drafting in a less demanding environment, where all the usual advice for beginners applies. Not so much in RTR block, which is really hard to get a handle on; many people complain about the lack of signals in drafting, and the absurd power level of five-color deck that open or are passed bombs other decks can't play. I also recommend that you follow the limited articles on the mothership. These may offer more value to a player learning the ropes than just watching a video.

Good luck.

Go draft, young man, go draft!

Hello everyone and thanks for your replies! more often then not i end up with a very weird 5 color deck that has often mana screwed me. When i see a card i think is really good or a mythic/shockland my eyes start blinging with dollar symbols, but then the deck itself doesnt always turn out to be that great.. :P
Let's see some decklists! There are a lot of good drafters on this forum, but we all have different strategies, so it might be better for you to hear what we have to say about your decks. You know, "show not tell" yada yada.

I found Carmen Sandiego before you were born unless you're Zlehtnoba.

my draft decks? are they saved somewhere?
I'm a pure paper drafter so I don't know. bobus?

Your tournament decks are saved. If you haven't touched your settings, fire up MtGO, go to deck editor, and choose load a deck. You should see a long list of folders, named for formats/expansions; they are ordered alphabetically. Navigate to the folder named Tournament Decks; decks are named with the date and time of event. They are saved in the internal MtGO format. To post them here, load a deck, then choose save as, choose local txt deck as format, and then paste the contents of that text file inside deck tags in a forum post.

Go draft, young man, go draft!

You could try streaming on Twitch and getting people to tell you what to do.

It works for all the other fish on there.

Or you can post threads here and ask people. Its what I do whenever I'm curious about stuff.

In the first one, how are you playing Obzedat (or why for that matter)?  I don't see any swamps.  Also, I don't think I've ever run Racecourse Fury in any deck I've played.

Those who fear the darkness have never seen what the light can do.

I've seen angels fall from blinding heights. But you yourself are nothing so divine. Just next in line.

Or enchantments, for that matter. "Well, you see, Jimmy cast this spell to flood the mountain, but then the gorgon just looked at the water really hard and it went away."
In the second, it looks like your deck is trying to be too much.  I see Deviant Glee and a bunch of small quick creatures, but I also see Grave Betrayal, Corpse Blockade, and Clinging Anenomes.  It really looks like your plans need focus.  Ask yourself "What is my plan to win the game?"  If you get a lot of 'or' options in your head, then your deck is going to be stretched to where it'll come in all the wrong pieces.

that's all the decks i could find, i hope ive posted enough deck to give you some insight on something :P
Deck One:

So, it's mainly one color, and your splash is on the higher-end of your curve, allowing you multiple chances to draw that one green source you need. You have aggressive low-drops that benefit from your combat tricks (Weapon Surge; Dynacharge) and I put in the riot gear so you could turn some of your early drops into mid-game beaters.

I'd say, based on the specific cards, you have a good grasp on card evaluation in a vacuum. I think you should start focusing on things like curve and mana symbols, and find a way to never play less than 7 sources of a main-color in your deck. Once you master that you can start tweaking your mana bases, but it took me about 6 months of drafting before I really started experimenting with that.

I found Carmen Sandiego before you were born unless you're Zlehtnoba.

Wow... that's a lot of drafts to review... I'll try and look at them, but I can't guarantee I'll be able to review/comment on all of them.

I found Carmen Sandiego before you were born unless you're Zlehtnoba.

I see a lot of attempts to go 4 colors, which on its own is not a bad idea, but you really need to narrow it down to two main colors and Powerful splashes.  And with very few guildgates in some of your builds, that is hard.  For example, in the last deck you Zhur-Taa Druid, Frilled Oculus AND Call of the Conclave.  All want to be dropped on turn two, but your mana base does not support that.  And they are most likely to come down much later than you like.

Those who fear the darkness have never seen what the light can do.

I've seen angels fall from blinding heights. But you yourself are nothing so divine. Just next in line.
