Homebrew Sugestions to improve Brilliant Beacon

I have an invoker charecter and I love Brilliant Beacon. The problem is that it really doesn't level at all and I don't like the fact that with almost every other player power you get some kind of reward if you crit someone but with this it is still it's flat 10 radiant damage and ongoing 10.

I get that they didn't want to make it to powerfull but I think a couple small changes would make it so you might actually want to use it more.

My first thought would be to change the damage slightly. Make it 10 plus half your level. Or possibly your Wisdom modifer or some combination of the two would make it level better. And the miss would be half damage like it really is now despite it saying 5.

My next thought would be for getting a crit. Maybe with wording that on a crit you double the damage or if that seems to powerfull get half again damage. Now that is just on the initial attack I am all for leaving the ongoing damage the same as it is now as 10 ongoing damage is pretty good even on paragon tier.

Last thought is on the penalties to attack. Instead of a flat -2 to all defences, attacks, and saving throws perhaps make it wisdom modifier based...maybe even make it a feat to improve the attack like other feats improve specific attacks.

Just wanted to know everyone's thoughts about this before I tried pitching this idea to my dm.

Well, GENERALLY 4e's approach to this sort of thing is to just provide higher level powers which you will swap in later on. I don't know what would be an upgrade of this power specifically as I haven't done a lot with higher level Invokers. I'm betting there is one though. However, you could also make this power scale.

10 + 1/2 level... hmmmm. Probably not too out of line, it is a daily. I don't really have an opinion about the crit. Crit fishing isn't really typical for Invokers and otherwise crit effects don't make a huge difference really. I'd keep the flat -2 penalties. Scaling penalties and bonuses will get you in trouble. -2 is just as good at level 30 as it is at level 1. Its a 10% reduction. If you make it -WIS then at 30th level it will be like -8 or something, which is REALLY strong. Almost every power in the game that started out with +STAT or -STAT got nerfed already.

Anyway, the level scaled damage isn't going to break anything IMHO, though watch out with Radiant, it its a very potent damage type.

Well, if I were your DM, the first thing I'd do is look at what the CharOp rating is for the power as it stands...

Looks like they rate it as sky blue, which is their second-highest rating, and describe it as "an extremely powerful, underappreciated power". So, there's no way in heck I'd allow you to improve it any further if I were your DM.

The only other advice I have is that Brilliant Beacon is a controller/leader type of power, whereas you seem to care more about dealing damage and maybe would be better off with a more controller/striker type of power, such as Invocation of Ice and Fire or Crown of Retaliation.
"There's an old saying that all it takes for evil to triumph is that good people do nothing. I've always had a problem with that. If you do nothing to oppose evil, then how are you 'good'? To turn aside and allow evil to flourish is to collaborate with it. You ask for mercy. You claim you have done nothing. That 'nothing' is why you deserve no mercy." - Lorian Karthfaerr, drow paladin of Avandra Robin Laws says I'm a Storyteller:
