Parad Makes a Set: Gandervell

Queen Gertrude of Galloway has disrupted the balance between life and death. In a desperate attempt to save her dying son William from the clutches of the reaper, she has banished the spirit of death itself. As a result, the spirits of the plane have come back with a vengeance, eager to take advantage of the weakening boundary between this world and the next.

Amidst the chaos, an anarchist sect known as the Bookburners has arisen from the alleys of Galloway, spreading its influence from Wyndmoor Street to Prince's Port. They seek to destroy all remnants of the ancient texts that bind the spirits to this world. The mages of Highwind Tower, desperate to save their beloved tomes, have upped their defenses, hoping to quell the rebellion before it gains too much momentum. But Darian Stormblade, the charismatic leader of the Bookburners, may prove too much of a match for the cowardly wizards.

Meanwhile, the nilbog to the north grow restless. From Pyresky Peak to Direvine Forest, the balance of nature has been thrown awry by Gertrude's pact. The geist of Gankrodo, the fallen leader of the nilbog, has risen once again to lead his warriors to invasion. With the sity already in open revolt, can the armies of Galloway stave off the impending barbarian horde? Only time will tell...

Welcome to Gandervell.

Haaaaaaaaunt!  I loved Haunt.  Looking forward to following this.
Man, more cards that are really good with Manipulate Fate. Long time no see.
I would have Astral Shift () (Exile this creature, or return it to the battlefield.), or possibly something else that indicates it can only come back when exiled with Astral Shift.

Also, genuinely curious: How do you pronounce Gertrude? Because it Norwegian, it's probably the most granny of names I can imagine, but I have no idea how I would say it in English.

A major problem I found when designing things with haunt is that haunting is mandatory, so "haunted creature" spells may end up as even worse Auras. Imagine, for instance, that Direvine Monstrosity dies and your opponent is the only one who controls a creature. Giving them a free +5/+5 would feel really terrible; why not go the vanishing/intimidate route and redesign it to fix this issue? Like this:

Possess (When this creature dies, you may exile it possessing target creature.)

I agree with Mown's comments on Astral Shift, and I would also like cannibalize better if you could cannibalize only at sorcery speed.

I also think this set deals with exile in a way that makes it too much a second graveyard; stuff like the Exilegoyf or the Exiled Zombify shouldn't exist, IMO. Astral shift and haunt are the way to have an exile matters set, in that they are cards that exile themselves and then care about being exiled.

On an individual card level, Prince's Port Merchant should not be a common. If you stretch it a lot, it is uncommon, but it would be safer at rare. Vault of Bones, Rock Slide and Galloway Doppelganger are all lovely.
Isn't the plot basically the same as Kamigawa's tho
Also, genuinely curious: How do you pronounce Gertrude? Because it Norwegian, it's probably the most granny of names I can imagine, but I have no idea how I would say it in English.

Kinda like German and Intrude? That's how I would pronounce it. But then again, my first language is Spanish.
Edit: Yeah, not even close. >.<

Now, the set. I like haunt. "Haunted creature" sounds weird, IDK. Wizards would probably do it "The creature ~ haunts". I would personally like more "The haunted creature".

And Astral shift can get out of hand really easy with CIP triggers.
"The body is but a vessel for the soul, a puppet which bends to the soul's tyranny. And lo, the body is not eternal, for it must feed on the flesh of others, lest it return to the dust from whence it came. Therefore must the soul deceive, despise and murder men."The Durai Papers

Grrr like in augur, trud like in trudy.

Hopefully you pronounce those right, because I've never understood those pronounciation symbols so I can't post those....
Also you gave magic 5 more free cyclers? Really?

I love internet. :>
"The body is but a vessel for the soul, a puppet which bends to the soul's tyranny. And lo, the body is not eternal, for it must feed on the flesh of others, lest it return to the dust from whence it came. Therefore must the soul deceive, despise and murder men."The Durai Papers

uhh, couldn't you easily cheat out big astal shift cards pretty easily by splashing white and/or blue into a bookburning based deck.  I have to think you could realiably get out some big Astral monster like the angel by turn four, especially with the accel and fixing in red.  Then, as long as you had at least one u/w open, it would never stay down.
Yeah, astral shift seems ridiculous.

One problem with haunt, I think, is that it worked differently for non-permanent and permanent cards. I do think it's weird that spells immediately haunt but creatures must die first. I kind of feel like haunt should only go on creatures, but you already have two creature-centric keywords.

I look forward to seeing the story develop.
The flavour seems awesome.

I think it's a mistake to mana costs built into your key/ability words. AStral Shift in particular looks like it should vary from card to card depending on how strong the cards are. Canibalize seems to be about the right cost but what if you want to make a creature with an ability that triggers whenever it cannibalizes a card? If you drew a card off of it every time or someting like that you might want to raise the cost.
Bookburning seems a little narrow. As an ability word that involves removing a card from your library for [effect] it could have a lot more aplication. As is, how many firebreathers are there in a set? How many can your set support?

Edit- you forgot to put the cycling on Prince's Port and Pyresky.
Is an activated ability allowed to be activated from exile? Just wondering...

But, yeah, it's a bit powerful. "Oh, my thing died? I'll cannibalize it, make a thing bigger, then Astral Shift it back onto the battlefield." "Hey, my top-deck management means lots of Astral Shift creatures on top of my library. Time to bookburn!"

All cards I make have artists credited in the appropriate places. Artist names in "quotes" are DeviantArt usernames unless otherwise mentioned.

"I play a Grave Betrayal. I get all your dead things now, mwahahahaha!"
"Okay. I play a Phage the Untouchable. Piss me off and I will sac it."
"... ... ... so guys, remind me again how to sac my own enchantments?"

@All the people saying astral shift is overpowered:

Astral shift – (): Exile this creature from the battlefield. You may cast this card from exile. If it was exiled from the battlefield this turn, you may pay () rather than pay this spell's mana cost.

Alternatively: (): Exile this creature from the battlefield. Return it to the battlefield at the beginning of the next end step.

Which do you guys like better?

@Riorvard: Possess is a really cool idea. Thanks. I'll change Prince's Port Merchant; I only made it common because I thought Vision Skeins said "Each player draws three cards," not two. As for exile being too much like a second graveyard being a bad thing, I'm not sure I agree with you, but I'll certainly take it under advisement. I could certainly use to free up some rare spots for Black and White. (I wanna reprint Near-Death Experience for the lifecyclers.)

@Mata_Hari: I'm unfamiliar with the plot of Kamigawa. I guess Konda stole That Which Was Taken to make himself immortal, and that started the Kami War? Kinda similar I guess. But this is based on a dream I had, so I'm not worried about it.

I like Haunt, and I really like the cards you've posted so far.  I am looking forward to seeing more of this set.

Re: Astral Shift — you need to figure out what you want it to do.  Is it just blinking?  Then your second suggestion sounds fine.  Is it an alternative casting for exiled cards?  Then lose the "(): Exile this." part.  I don't think you can do both and have it make intuitive sense — the last clause on your first suggestion sounds a bit weird to me.
Regarding Astral shift, I think I'm just gonna make it a blink effect for now, even though it does decrease the synergy with Cannibalize and Bookburning. Opens design space for cards like this:

Shimmering Ooze

Protection from white, from black, and from red

I'm particularly interested whether you guys think Arcane Potency (#18) is overpowered or not, whether 7 power on Jade Ravager (#15) is pushing it, and whether Nevermore Knight (#2) is ok as an uncommon.

Just realized 5 out of 7 of my Green commons cost ... Hrm.... People who have designed sets, how do you deal with uneven mana spreads?

Keeper of the Faith – got it
Nevermore Knight
Steamjet Giant – 5/5
Spellweaver Sprite
Stealer of Secrets – 1/2
Nilbog Flamekeeper – jumps through hoops
Bookburner Rallier
Bouldercrush Giant – nice
Woodland Traveller – got a spike
Year of Abundance
Greed Machine
Jade Ravager
Shield of the Righteous: Equipped creature gets +0/+1 until end of turn.
Arcane Potency
Leafwing Angel
Shimmering Ooze

Card-by-card response to Matt_Holck's suggestions
Nevermore Knight

, Sure.
Steamjet Giant – 5/5

Right! Thanks.
Spellweaver Sprite

Dude, no way. Compare to Wind Drake. for a free spell? I can see somebody arguing , but not .
Stealer of Secrets – 1/2

Doesn't feel very black...
Nilbog Flamekeeper – jumps through hoops

Yeah, it interacts with Bookburning. I wanted more spice in that way since I changed Astral shift to just be blinking.
Bookburner Rallier

Firebreathing is more expensive than you'd think. Dragon Hatchling is the cheapest card that has it, and that's an 0/1.
Year of Abundance

You really think so? Maybe.
Greed Machine

It's based off of Greed.
Jade Ravager

That's what it is.
Shield of the Righteous: Equipped creature gets +0/+1 until end of turn.

No.
Arcane Potency
Leafwing Angel
Shimmering Ooze

They have to cost 2CD to fit in with the rest of the cycle. If anything, I'll make Arcane Potency make your instant and sorcery spells cost more to cast, and decrease Leafwing Angel and Shimmering Ooze to 3/4s. But I really don't think Leafwing Angel and Shimmering Ooze are too ridiculous, given, for example, Cloudgoat Ranger, and all the other midrange creatures green and white have been getting lately.

I'll change Nevermore Knight to , and I'll change Year of Abundance to because I just realized how perfectly Melvin-y that is, but the rest of your suggestions I'm leaving. Thank you very much for your time, though.

I won't be surprised if people agree with you on the power level of my multicolored cards. I just have a weakness for 4/4 for 4s.

Chandra alighted atop Pyresky Peak. The flows of red mana were strong here. She could feel the fire flowing through here veins, and she was itching to start a blaze. Where should she direct her wrath?

She looked to the west: Direine Forest. A strong candidate. Plenty of wood to burn. But who was there to suffer amidst the flames but mindless beasts? She could feel the spirits of the forest calling to her, begging her not to destroy their homeland. Well, that was something. But she had no interest in the wails of spirits. If she could find nothing else, it would have to do. But for now, she turned her sights elsewhere.

She turned to the north. Nothing but frozen waselands; far too cold and desolate for her fires. She turned to the east: the ocean. Blue mana; yuck! Chandra was beginning to lose hope. She had been attracted to the plane by the powerful flows of red mana on Pyresky Peak. But what use was red mana if there was nothing on the plane to burn?

Then she turned to the south. She saw the city of Galloway. She say the vedalken airships soaring though the sky. She saw the peddlers on Wndmoor Street, desperate to sell their wears. She saw the bustling merchants at Prince's Port, with their highly flammable ships.

And high above it all, she saw Highwind Tower, the center of white and blue mana on the plane. She could smell the fear of its wizards from here. Doubtless there would be countless tomes in its ivory halls to help fuel her inforno, and bring it crumbling to the ground. What hope would be left for the people of the city if their most beloved landmark was reduced to a pile of ash?

Chandra smiled.
Here was a city worth burning.

{+2}: Target creature becomes 3/1 until end of turn.
{-X}: Search your library for a red instant or sorcery card with converted mana cost X or less. You may cast it without paying its mana cost. Then shuffle your library.
{-6}: Put a blaze counter on each land target player controls. For long as a land has a blaze counter on it, it has "At the beginning of your upkeep, this land deals 1 damage to you."

I like how you can cast a Worldfire for 1RR on turn 3 if you don't play other red instants or sorceries. Suspend a creature before playing this and it's over for your opponent. :>

Edit: Or of course, the variants like Oblivion Ring and stuff like Norin (not Norin exactly, but the idea is similar).
"The body is but a vessel for the soul, a puppet which bends to the soul's tyranny. And lo, the body is not eternal, for it must feed on the flesh of others, lest it return to the dust from whence it came. Therefore must the soul deceive, despise and murder men."The Durai Papers

Arcane Potency does seem overpowered.  After turn 4 you'll be pretty much doubling up on everything if you choose to cast something.

I do feel Jade Ravager has too high of a power, but I'm not sure if 6 or 5 is the better number.  I'd have to see it in play.

I think Nevermore Knight is fine.  The protection effect is very interesting. No reason he needs to cost in my opinion.

I have had the same issue with a mana cost spread in certain colors, especially green at .  I had to redesign cards to make it work properly.

Redesigned Chandra.

Removed Return from the Void and Reach into the Æther from the spoiler. (They were , exile-Zombify, and , exile-Regrowth, respectively.) Also removed Arcane Potency and Badlands Prowler because I can do better. Changed Leafwing Angel to a 3/3. Changed Jade Ravager to a 6/4.

(Note: The first time I post a card, I don't edit it. The final version of the card will always be visible in the spoiler.)

Changed Cannibalize to sorcery speed.

Four new cards:

New cards
Killing Time
Instant (U)
Look at the top three cards of target opponent's library. Put one card on top of that player's library, one card on bottom of that player's library, and one card into that player's graveyard.

Hoarder of Souls

Flying
When Hoarder of Souls enters the battlefield, all cards in exile that could possess it possess it.
4/4

Lone Elephant
Creature – Elephant (U)
Possess (When this creature dies, you may exile it possessing target creature.)
Possessed creature gets +3/+3.
3/3

Sower of Seeds
Creature – Plant Elemental (U)
Possess (When this creature dies, you may exile it possessing target creature.)
Whenever Sower of Seeds or the creature it possesses deals combat damage to a player, create a 1/1 green Saproling token.
Possessed creature gets +2/+2.

Hey I noticed this card because it got nominated for CotW,

Killing Time Instant Look at the top three cards of target opponent's library. Put one card on top of that player's library, one card on bottom of that player's library, and one card into that player's graveyard.

I like the Telling Time reference, but it's pretty underpowered because of the card disadvantage. It's basically just giving you the weakest mode of Dimir Charm as well as taking away the option to target yourself with that mode. Why not mirror Telling Time even more closely and put the last card in your hand instead of in their graveyard? Just use the Praetor's Grasp wording, like so

Look at the top three cards of target opponent's library. Put one card on top of that player's library, one card on bottom of that player's library, and exile one card face down. You may look at and play the exiled card as long as it remains exiled.

I think I'll just leave it the way it is, thanks.

First of all, for elegance reasons. Second of all, just because it's the weakest mode of Dimir Charm doesn't mean it's underpowered; to me, that means its power level is right on target. (Some of those charms were off the charts.)

Here's a splashy Green Mythic for y'all:

Eater of Death
Creature – Spirit (M)
Trample
Cannibalize ((), Exile a creature card from your graveyard: Put a +1/+1 counter on this creature. Activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery.)
Whenever Eater of Death cannibalizes a creature card, you may return that card from exile to the battlefield.
It eats the death right out of their corpses.
6/6

Individually though, all of the abilities are weak, and I'm not sure if I can say that Izzet's is that bad either. However, separated, Izzet Charm is UR: Dispel, shock or instant speed careful study. All of these effects cost 1.2 mana at best.

I think it could cantrip without losing anything. I nominated it despite my power level issues with it.

This seems a bit too powerful, even for a mythic. :bgm: is cheap for a basic reanimation spell, but this adds the ability to pump up your already-huge creature on the side, and on top of all that it's repeatable. 9 CMC is a lot, I admit, but I'd make it, say, a 3/3 for . This way it's more of a build-around creature that's easier to get out but harder to make the biggest creature on the board.

Making it a 3/3 for would make it a whole lot more powerful, not less. It's the ability to bring back all your creatures for cheap that makes this thing powerful, not the 6/6 trampler body. That's just icing on the cake.

I'd be happy to remove trample, though, if you think that would help.

Yeah, removing trample would probably help. As is, with a 6/6 trampling body, it basically wins you the game if uncountered and your opponent didn't pack a kill spell like Doom Blade. Green of all colors can ramp up to nine mana in 6-7 turns at best, and then Eater of Death (I'll call him EoD for short) would get very ugly, very fast. Removing trample makes it slightly less dangerous, so your opponent could chump block long enough to come up with a solution. It's still a very powerful card -- very mythic.
Another thing that came to my mind is the Legendary subtype. A good deal of mythics are legendary, and EoD to me seems deserving of that, even if it has little to no importance in the storyline. Legendary could be a slight drawback to EoD and make it somewhat more reasonable; just my two cents though.
Word. Removed trample and made it Legendary.

Five more cards:

[spoiler=New cards]Holy Power
Enchantment – Aura (C)
Enchant creature
Enchanted creature gets +1/+2 and has lifelink.

Unholy Power
Enchantment – Aura (C)

Enchanted creature gets +2/+1 and has deathtouch.

Deathcaller
Creature – Zombie Wizard (U)
Cannibalize ((), Exile a creature card from your graveyard: Put a +1/+1 counter on this creature. Activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery.)

3/2

Pyresky Brutalizer
Creature – Giant Berserker (R)
At the beginning of your upkeep, Pyresky Brutalizer fights another target creature chosen at random.
5/5

Nilbog Corpsecooker
Creature – Goblin Shaman (C)

OK. But I don't think "Copy target permanent" works. How about:

Choose one—Create a token that's a copy of target permanent; or copy target instant or sorcery spell. You may choose new targets for the copy.

Yeah, that looks fine.
Like, the enchantment is cute and all, and maybe that makes it better. I'm not entirely sure.
