Question on levels with Races

I'm looking at playing a Yuan-Ti Pureblood, and I'm wondering what level i start out as.  The race only has a +2 LA, but has four levels of Monstrous Humanoid included.  I'm wondering what level does this start me at as a Yuan-Ti Scout 1?  Also how do the Monstrous humanoid levels affect my skill points as a scout?
Going with the numbers you have here a Yuan-Ti Scout 1 counts as a 7th-level character.  That is 4 level in Monstrous Humanoid +2 LA + Scout 1.  While the levels in Monstrous Humanoid do NOT directly affect the skill points you get as a scout you need to remember that you START in Monstrous Humanoid and thus do not get the 4x skill points at Scout 1; you multiclassed into Scout.

Exactly.  So you get your x4 skill points for your first "level" of monstrous humanoid instead, just as the standard yuan-ti in the Monster Manual does.

In terms of game mechanics, the monstrous humanoid HD work almost exactly like class level HD, except that your list of class skills is from your race (instead of being from a standard "monstrous humanoid" class).

Zauber's Mutable Rod: This rod has a number of useful functions that make it easier to live in the wilderness. It is made of polished wood, with five studlike buttons on one end. Savage Species has monster progression tables that let you start at level 1, and then play through your racial HD & LA.

Those Savage Species progression basically take your starting "monster" and break it's LA/HD down into a progression.  Some 'levels' you don't get any HD but when you are done with the SS species progression you'll be at the same place you'd be if you just started with that species.

A SS Yuan-Ti Pureblood would be a six level long class that gives you four HD and when completed would have you looking just like a 6th-level character who starts as a Yuan-Ti.  After that you would be free to take any other classes.

A bit of digging can find you a lot. What comes to mind immediately (assuming you don't want an anthropomorphic animal, which I largely consider cheezeball) is a Dreamsight shifter.

Why Cha or Wis, by the way? Scouts aren't very good with either of them. We really work best if you tell us the whole story and don't withhold information in stages. If we know your goals, we can give better advice.

What's a "good race" going to mean?  If you are looking for a race with no LA that has a bonus to DEX and a bonus to CHA or WIS without a penalty to STR that is a very tall order.  I'm not sure one exists and if it does you'd better be prepared for a big penalty to CON.

Generally speaking any race with a bonus to a mental ability score is so beneficial to an already strong spellcasting class that it will get a LA.  If there are any species that meet your needs I'm curious which ones they are.

Has more detail on the thread. I'm using a hombrew rogue/scout atm. I'm considering adding either sorcerer for swiftblade, or heading down the swordsage path and picking a prestige class from there.

This is kind of all over the place, and still doesn't match the requirements given for a race above.

If you're going swiftblade, do not use non-casting classes as your opening levels. Whatever your rogue/scout cross looks like, it won't lend itself well to swiftblade (which already loses caster levels). I suggested swiftblade as an alternate way of looking at movement-based combat, not as a possible expansion to scout.

With that in mind, you don't need to prioritize Dexterity anywhere near as much as you seem to do (although the swordsage route can be fun - they look like they need Wisdom, but it's easy to build them so they don't, particularly if you use a Shadow Hand weapon. Such a character can actually be built to only rely on Dexterity.).

1)  It looks like your race question was to see if you were going Swordsage (+Wis) or Sorcerer (+Cha). That's what you were looking for, but it's not how you answered this question.

2) The availability of level adjustments is set by the DM, not by the players. If you're starting at level 1, you simply cannot play anything with a level adjustment (Savage Species progressions notwithstanding).


If you're going Swordsage, the "typical" races for them are Human, Strongheart Halfling (it's a normal halfling but swaps out the bonus to all saves for a bonus feat, as a human), Whisper Gnome (a heavy stealth focus), or Xeph (which would probably be a good choice in general, particularly if you look into psionic feats like Speed of Thought), although that list is hardly exhaustive. To bypass the Strength penalty on three of these races, you usually do the Dex-heavy route: grab Shadow Hand stances (usually Assassin's Stance; the first-level stance in your case would almost certainly be Child of Shadow), Weapon Finesse, and Shadow Blade. Boom, instantly you don't care about Strength at all, even in melee (those feats swap it for basic melee, while Setting Sun throws switch it out for trips.)

If you're going swiftblade, races are discussed here (although he mentions grey elf as a recommended class, there is a charisma-based equivalent in the star elf.). That thread will also discuss how to build a casting progression around the swiftblade's strengths and limitations - which you'll have to consider if you want sorcerer casting, as it's actually much harder to build a sorcerer than it is a wizard if you're new to the respective class. I'd suggest using battle sorcerer as your entry point; it's a perfectly fine warrior/mage in its own right and a great entry point into mixed prestiges like this. (Such builds usually use something like Abjurant Champion to round it out, which is another great class for this, but due to the sorcerer's delayed spell level progression it's kind of difficult to get the best AbjChamp ability - you basically have to choose between it or your 10th level in a prestige class. Thankfully here, swiftblade has several breakpoints before that.)
