Paragnostic Assembly Research Bonuses

Perhaps "research" is a specific subsystem under the rules, but if so I haven't managed to find it.  So I'm left unclear - when you attain affiliation rank in the Paragnostic Assembly and become entitled to "a +1 bonus per five hours of research" on certain skills...how long does that last?  They say you can choose a different subject later, so I'm assuming it's not permanent.

As far as the benefit of the rest of Magic is concerned, gold cards in Legends were executed perfectly. They got all the excitement a designer could hope out of a splashy new mechanic without using up any of the valuable design space. Truly amazing. --Aaron Forsythe's Random Card Comment on Kei Takahashi
I'm assuming you are speaking about Complete Champion p.72-73.

I would assume that you essentially get the bonus once, for a single skill check, made after spending the required time researching the topic. The text says that you get the bonus on "one of the following skill checks", not "one of the following skills".

The part about being able to chose a different skill the next time is weird, but is probably intended to clarify that you are not limited forever after to the one skill once you used this ability.

Essentially, you get the bonus on each of the skills listed, provided you spent one to five hours on the check. As opposed to, say, Skill Focus, which is limited to one skill but doesn't require you to do research to get the bonus every time you make a check.

It's not a bonus on the skill for you, it's a modifier to a specific check. I.e. if you're making a check using one of those skills, and you've got access to the resources of the Paragnostic Assembly, you can spend a few hours in those resources and improve the result of your check because of it.

Here's an example. You've an archivist (divine wizard, basically) who has found a tome of particularly obscure prayers and rituals - and based on the strength of the cult you took it from, it really does have some divine power in it (i.e. it's a spellbook of divine magic). You want to see if you can understand how that magic works. That's normally a Spellcraft check, specifically one to learn a spell from a spellbook or scroll, which normally takes 8 hours. However, if you're at the Paragnostic Assembly, you can cross-reference the obscure religious symbols and unusual notation with books on ancient deities and theology as you do this - getting a +1 on that check per extra hour you spend in the library (up to a +5 bonus for 13 hours spent doing research there - five hours of extra research plus the eight normally needed to do the check).

For instant work (i.e. Spellcraft to ID a spell as it's being cast) or field work where those resources are unavailable (i.e. identifying the properties of a magical stream) this won't be able to be applied, naturally.

I'd chalk this lack of clarity up to Complete Champion obviously being rushed through development; it has a lot of other errors and loose language in it. (The former's a bigger problem than the latter - Complete Psionic had similar terrible editing and development, and was largely reviled, while the Tome of Battle is one of the best-designed books in the game yet uses loose language in places that gets in the way - but the two together can be extremely problematic.)

Seishi: I think it might be fun to have a one-off [game] tuned fairly, but with the intention of wiping the party.

DisposableHero_: if [my campaign] has taught me nothing else, it is that with this group, nothing tuned fairly will ever wipe the party

RadicalTaoist: I've been throwing **** at this group that's 5 levels over CRed in DFN, and have yet to wipe the party.
