I'm going to go to a meet soon.

Must I have sleeves all the same colour, brand etc.?
all sleeves in your deck must be the same, yes

but you only have to use sleeves if you are playing with Alpha cards (the very first Magic set)

Why is this?
so that you can't mark your deck
if you use different sleeves for some of the cards you can distinguish them facedown

Alpha cards are shaped differently, so you'd be able to tell them apart without sleeves.
you only have to use sleeves if you are playing with Alpha cards (the very first Magic set)

Two more common reasons:

  • The cards have different wear patterns.

  • The color isn't the same due to fading or ink differences.

....so are clear sleeves illegal?
no

but it is ultimately up to the headjudge
if he decides your cards are marked you have to use other sleeves or something

Thank you everyone!
What is illegal is having a marked deck - i.e. without looking at the front of a card, you shouldnt be able to tell what card it is.

You really should use sleeves anyway though. They make it easier to shuffle, they stop your cards from being ruined (and getting marked), and they make it harder for your deck to get mixed up with random cards that are laying about.

That makes no sense to me. If they spelled the ability out on the card in full then it would not be allowed in a mono-black Commander deck, but because they used a keyword to save space it is allowed? ~ Tim
Yup, just like you can have Birds of paradise in a mono green deck but not Noble Hierarch. YAY COLOR IDENTITY

I love this description. Like the cows are sponges filled with milk. I can see it all Nick Parks claymation-style with the cow's eyes bugging out momentarily as a giant farmer squeezes it like a squeaky dog toy, and milk shoots out of it.
