This is a running recap of icv2's analysis of the top 5 RPGs.

2008 SummerD&D (WotC)WH 40K: Dark Heresy (FFG)World of Darkness (WWGS)Shadowrun (CLG)Exalted (WWGS)"Board games and the big launch for Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition kept the game category steady to up a little in the hobby channel in the second quarter, according to the ICv2 Guide to Games #58, released at Gen Con."

"D&D blew away expectations, with almost everyone we talked to surprised by how well the launch of 4th Edition has done.  The success of 4th Edition also spilled over into sales of D&D Miniatures, which have also done well recently."

2008 FallD&D (WotC)WH 40K: Dark Heresy (FFG)World of Darkness (WWGS)Shadowrun (Catalyst)Pathfinder (Paizo)--
2008 WinterD&D (WotC)WH 40K: Dark Heresy (FFG)World of Darkness (WWGS)Star Wars (WotC)Shadowrun (Catalyst)"Non-collectible miniature games and RPGs were flat to up a little."
2009 Q2D&D (WotC)Warhammer (FFG)Song of Fire and Ice (FFG)World of Darkness (WWGS)Shadowrun (Catalyst)"The roleplaying game category remains deeply troubled, with most brands down, and the gap between Dungeons and Dragons and the rest growing."
2009 Q3D&D (WotC)Pathfinder (Paizo)World of Darkness (WWGS)Song of Fire & Ice (FFG)Shadowrun (Catalyst)"RPGs, behind the new excitement associated with Paizo’s Pathfinder RPG, are also doing well. "
2009 Q4D&D (WotC)Pathfinder (Paizo)Warhammer (FFG)Rogue Trader (FFG)World of Darkness (WWGS)"RPG sales were down around 10% in 2009."
2010 Q1D&D (WotC)Pathfinder (Paizo)Warhammer (FFG)Rogue Trader (FFG)Dragon Age (Green Ronin)"Paizo’s Pathfinder is competing for #1 in some venues, especially in comparative sales of core books."
2010 Q2D&D (WotC)Pathfinder (Paizo)Warhammer (FFG)Shadowrun (Catalyst)Rogue Trader (FFG)"In RPGs, the battle for leadership between perennial winner D&D and Paizo’s Pathfinder continues, with Wizards of the Coast mounting a strong defense and Paizo on the attack"
2010 Q3D&D (WotC) & Pathfinder (Paizo) (tie)(tie)Warhammer (FFG)Rogue Trader (FFG)Dresden Files (Evil Hat)--
2010 Q4D&D (WotC)Pathfinder (Paizo)Rogue Trader (FFG)Dragon Age (Green Ronin)Mutants & Masterminds (Green Ronin)--
2011 Q1D&D (WotC)Pathfinder (Paizo)Rogue Trader (FFG)Dragon Age (Green Ronin)Mutants & Masterminds (Green Ronin)"And in RPGs, WotC’s Dungeons & Dragons and Paizo’s Pathfinder continue to duke it out, with D&D's coterie   of one-game stores, relative strength in the book channel, and   organized play allowing it to still hold a lead over-all.  That helps D&D overcome the stronger Pathfinder product schedule, which is swinging the balance in favor of the Paizo line in more stores that carry both."
2011 Q2Pathfinder (Paizo)D&D (WotC)Rogue Trader (FFG)Dragon Age (Green Ronin)Shadowrun (Catalyst)"In the RPG category, we estimate that Paizo's Pathfinder won the quarter, behind more and stronger releases than Dungeons & Dragons."
2011 Q3Pathfinder (Paizo)D&D (WotC)Rogue Trader (FFG)Dragon Age (Green Ronin)Shadowrun (Catalyst)"Paizo’s Pathfinder, #1 in the roleplaying game category, continued to gain momentum, with sharp differences in the number of releases between it and WotC’s category-defining Dungeons and Dragons.  Some retailers told ICv2 of differences between the customers of the two games, with D&D 4.0 appealing to new players and people that don’t want to get super-involved in an RPG, and Pathfinder the choice of players that want to spend more time on playing."
2011 Q4Pathfinder (Paizo)D&D (WotC)Dark Heresy/ Rogue Trader/ Deathwatch (FFG)Dragon Age (Green Ronin)Shadowrun (Catalyst)--
2012 SpringPathfinder (Paizo)D&D (WotC)Dark Heresy/ Rogue Trader/ Deathwatch (FFG)Dragon Age (Green Ronin)Marvel Heroic Roleplaying (Margaret Weis Productions)--
2012 SummerPathfinder (Paizo)D&D (WotC)Dark Heresy/ Rogue Trader/ Deathwatch (FFG)Dragon Age (Green Ronin)Dungeon Crawl Classics (Goodman Games)--
2012 FallPathfinder (Paizo)Star Wars (FFG)D&D (WotC)Dark Heresy/ Rogue Trader/ Deathwatch (FFG) Iron Kingdoms (Privateer Press)--

Thanks for the recap! You may want to include older data as well, not that it changes too much. As you can see, those go back to the launch of D&D 4th Edition. Curiously, Fall 2008 already features Pathfinder, although it was absent from the two following updates. Since PFRPG wasn't officially published before 2009, I suppose it has something to do with the well-received Beta release.

BTW, I'd be nice if you corrected your table. Shadowrun was created by FASA, but it wasn't their property since about 2001. It's owned by Catalyst Game Labs.
Thanks for the fill-in.  The table is fixed!
You're welcome. The other day I digged up some older ICv2 analyses. Curiously, some older "top RPG" list entire companies, like Mongoose or Green Ronin. Ranking supposedly far below D&D... Sorry, but at the moment I don't have time to make it into a nice table. It's a start, though. Mind you, there are probably some "top 3" lists from early 2004 as well, I just couldn't find them. Same goes for 2005 Q3 - it should be available somewhere, unless something significantly changed in the meantime.
