I just recently lost yet another character to a trap in my friend's literal meatgrinder of a campaign, as a result I am rushing to put a character together before Thursday night's game.

We use a 24 point spread for attributes and pretty much anything is allowed, with exception of the Born Undera Bad Sign/ Auspicous Birth Backgrounds (which the DM dislikes)

My idea or inspiration for this build is to make a character loosly like the sorcerer knights from some of David Gemmil's works (but a little more darker inspired), a striker that abuses cold/ cold vulnerability by using things like "Winter Touched + Lasting Frost" combo mated to a Frost or Frost Brand Craghammer and Sheild for " Hindering Shield + Overwhelming Impact", along with other tricks like "Commanding Vow + Deadly Draw". I also decided to try Hybridizing the Blackguard with the Sorcerer in order to cherry pick some of the Sorcerer's powers and give some arcane flavor to my build.

I have to present my DM with a 1-30th build before I can play the character, so this is what I have come up with so far.

I wonder if a Paladin|Warlock wouldn't be better. You're a half-elf and you chose Eldritch Strike for your dilettante option. Might as well be able to use it at-will. You could then MC Sorcerer for a power swap or two.

This build leaves me with a lot of questions. You didn't take Flame Spiral nor Valorous Smite, so, what do you envision as this characters role / benefit to the party ?

With a little reflavoring you could have a dark sword wielding arcane character in a swordmage. You could also have a much better striker when you just put an accurate implement (dagger) in the hands of a pure sorcerer.

And that is aside of issues like the weird boosting of Constitution, High Imaskar background and weapon choice Hammer.

That was probably the idea. But I'm wondering why that's better than just hybriding Warlock in the first place? 

I made some minor adjustments to include Valorous Smite, Flame Spiral (my DM will let me refluff it to give it the Cold keyword (renamed Cold Spiral), and Lightning Daggers with arcane admixture for cold and Versatile Expertise was replaced with Devout Protector Expertise.

I played the following a while ago at heroic with some success. It is planned until 16, but I have little idea how to develop it beyond this. It is quite different from your conception, but hopefully shows that a Sorcerer/Blackguard can be viable. It benefits from a good AC and general survivability, and packs a pretty nasty case of Flame Spiral.

Blackguard/Sorcerer-Executioner; Eladrin, Born under a Bad Sign, Sarifal Feywarden, Spirit of Fury, Questing Knight

Some of the key points are: The ki-focus makes attacks fiery, which allows Sarifal's Blessing's vulnerability to trigger. Commanding Vow allows sliding with Divine Sanction, which in turn may trigger Flame Spiral and grant CA due to Deadly Draw. CA brings extra damage from Dark Menace and Sprit of Fury.

The build has problems with fire resistace. Gloves of Piercing help and Surging Flame might be a good feat to include for this reason, and if you can get Gift of Flame, evn better. At Epic, Paladin's Truth should probably be an early feat to take.

we have been playing for a year and half, and we have just reached 18th level and every player in 6 player group but 1 is on their 3rd or 4th character, the DM likes the game to move quickly, with lots of large battles and many traps, house rule is you have 50 secs to decide your actions, execute your die rolls and calculate hits misses and damage when your turn comes up, before the DM moves to the next character or NPC in the init order.  This makes the game challenging and sometimes leads to mistakes that cost character lives. my last character fell through a swiveling floor trap, that locked closed above him when my character fell through it, to fall 100 ' fall damage, ensued, and then to top it off  my character landed in circular room filled with spinning blades that filled the room causing 25-50 HP damage per round. My character lasted another 3 rnds before being ground down to zero HP and then I proceeded to roll 5-2-1 on my death saves. And wala I need a new character once again

As I said in my first post my idea or inspiration for this build is to make a character loosly like the sorcerer knights from some of David Gemmil's works (but a little more darker inspired). As the Raven Queen is the Goddess of Death,Fate and Winter my idea was to create a holy knight in heavy armor that runs about smacking things with a hammer of ice and shield and using cold elemental magic to control, blast or other wise debuff his enemies. So I thought the blackguard's with it's dark flavor would cover the first part of that and the sorcerer using cold to to debuff his enemies hit points and attacks would cover the last.

Olin: a pure sorcerer would deal a lot more damage, a paladin would maybe deal more damage, definitely be a better defender. 
While hybrid blackguard is definitely an improvement over straight up blackguard, but that still does not make it good.

Arcane Admixture on a daily power means you spent a feat fro a benefit that may or may not happen once per day. If instead you were to worship say Sehanine, and pick Silvery Glow, or if you picked a focus feat, you'd get a damage boost with every or almost every power you'd use. 
At feadair: wouldn't that build be better as Dex/Cha, tertiary Con, and make Fortitude your weakest defense?

Flame Spiral combined with Paladin powers that impose Divine Sancion plus Commanding Vow and Deadly Draw is the way to go. With the Commanding Vow slide, Flame Spiral turns into a triple tap eg with Call of Challenge (lvl 2, minor): Standard Flame Spiral, Minor Call of Challenge to slide enemies next to you activating Flame Spiral and giving you CA. They now start their their turn next to you, and take damage from Flame Spiral the third time.

True, but Ardent Strike imposes Divine Sanction, which is useful in particular with Commanding Vow and Deadly Draw. Str is also useful eg for Draconic Majesty.

Unfortunately all the optimization in the world can't save you from a DM like this. Kinda makes me feel like all the advice here doesn't really matter if you're just going to get DM-bolted again in two levels.

True, but Ardent Strike imposes Divine Sanction, which is useful in particular with Commanding Vow and Deadly Draw. Str is also useful eg for Draconic Majesty. 


Spending your Standard to mark a single target with an at-will is non-op, especially at the level in question.
Commanding Vow really isn't that useful as most enemies adjacent to a Defender aren't attacking Allies unless the punishment is really trivial, in which case fixing that is far more important, regardless a feat that enables CA against maybe 2 targets per encounter is worthless.

Olin: Aside from the half-elf part, the first reply had a good answer to your "Magical Dark Defender" if that's what you're going for. If you're just looking for a Tough Striker with some Raven Queen connotations, I'd say go with a Ranger|Cleric or Revenant Shadar-Kai Sorcerer. Hybrid Blackguard doesn't gain you noticable survivability and outright lowers your damage.

Also, auto-kill traps kinda seem like the DM doesn't understand how 4e works. "You didn't have enough perception" = Character Death is poor design; nearly all pit traps either have to hit, or have a "grab the edge with acrobatics" clause.

I would recommend ditching the Hybrid portion of this build, and instead Multiclass. This is because, the paladin has several ways of getting his powers classified as "Arcane", and if they are "Arcane" and you are a Sorc, you get your bonus damage tacked on to that power. 

For example, take Virtous Strike, and Power of Arcana. Now you have a Divine/Arcane, MBA that deals Radiant damage and it gets bonus damage from your Sorcerer power. It counts as an Arcane and Divine power for feats that effect those power sources.

However, if you are a Hybrid, you get none of that. You also have Eldritch strike, which gains little from you being a Sorcerer.

You spent your Hybrid Talent to get Heavy Armor, but you have another option. Switch to a Dex instead of Str, and stick with light armors. Ditch strength all together and focus on Chaladin powers. You should end up with a nice AC, Ref, and it increases the damage for your arcane attacks. Use the stat points you save to boost your Con. Then you can get some sweet Hide Armor.

You took Vice of Domination, but you might want to read the fine print. Dominators do their best damage when they have temp hp. The real question becomes, "will I reliably have the temp hp needed to do deal enough damage to kill my foes". Unless I missed something (or if you have someone dishing out lots of temps in your party), you are not going to have the temps to consistantly deal damage. 

Finally I am left wondering, what is it your party needs? Does it need a Striker? Does it need an off tank? Does it need melee support? Many other classes accomplish those things and more. Sorcerers are fine strikers. Paladins can provide a lot of support. Both are tanky. Hybrid them together, and what do you get? A character who's tankiness comes from being a Sorcerer, and damage comes from being a Paladin. Does that sound right?

Which doesn't get you the Sorcerer's Damage Bonus. Only a Half Elf Sorc with Dilettante Virtuous Strike or Paragon Multiclassing can get you that combination, and none of that is remotely worth doing.

Paladins themselves make very bad strikers past level 3 or so, anyway, since WotC only gave them Big W powers in low heroic and their only "double tap" relies on an ally hitting and being able to OA.
