Hi,

an example: 5/5 creature with deathtouch and trample is blocked by 4/4, how much damage is delt to the defending player? 1 or 4?

Anything between 0 and 4.

The 5/5 must assign lethal damage to the blockers. As it has deathtouch, 1 damage is enough. Now that all blockers have lethal damage assigned to them, the rest must be assigned to the remaining blockers any way you chose. But hey, the creature also has trample! You may then assign any number of damage to the blockers (0 is OK) and the rest on the defending player/planeswalkers.

Thank you!

note: that with the rules prior to Magic 2011, it used to be 0 to 1 damage, M11 made the bombo a combo and that's how it's been ever since.

Deathtouch used to be a triggered ability. It didn't used to affect damage assignment.

But since we're all living in 2013 we don't really need to let that confuse us any.

During M10, it was no longer a triggered ability, but instead of the current "1 point from a source with deathtouch is lethal for purposes of damage assignment", it instead let you completely ignore the damage assignment order. So if a 2/2 with deathtouch was blocked by 3 3/3s, it could destroy any two of them. For trample, you still needed to assign damage equal to the toughness of each blockers before assigning any to the planeswalker or player.
we don't really need to let that confuse us any.

Ah! but there are those who specialize in that kind of comments...

If I steal a hundred dollar from a loot of one thousand, people might notice;

If I steal a hundred dollar from a loot of one million, I might get away with it;

If I wish to steal even more and still go unnoticed, I need to make the loot bigger.

Now you know why taxes always go up.

For trample, you still needed to assign damage equal to the toughness of each blockers before assigning any to the planeswalker or player.

Huh? So if we get back to the original scenario: A 5/5 (deathtouch + trample) blocked by 4/4 will deal only 1 damage to the player? I'm confused because it goes against what Zoidberg said...

No, that was before 2013. Forget all about that!

Already forgot it! Thanks!

(ye confusing me with pre 2011 rules and stuff... Bad bad boy)

Sometimes bringing up older incarnations of the rules is helpful, since it allows newer players to spot mistakes being made by veterans who never got the memo...

That makes no sense to me. If they spelled the ability out on the card in full then it would not be allowed in a mono-black Commander deck, but because they used a keyword to save space it is allowed? ~ Tim
Yup, just like you can have Birds of paradise in a mono green deck but not Noble Hierarch. YAY COLOR IDENTITY

I love this description. Like the cows are sponges filled with milk. I can see it all Nick Parks claymation-style with the cow's eyes bugging out momentarily as a giant farmer squeezes it like a squeaky dog toy, and milk shoots out of it.

Well, once it happenned like that too but got fixed.

For those interested, here's the history of deathtouch.

Trigger on damage done -> State based effect since last time damage was done (but still had to assign damage equal to toughness of blocker) -> same + 1 assigned damage is lethal

Tadaaaa! Fixed (please don't contradict me even if not totally right :P).
