Caltrops hurts flying creatures?

How can Caltrops deal damage to flying creatures?
Why would it not?

If you're wondering because of the art, art doesn't have any effect on what cards do.

My EDH decks:

Erebos ()

Damia ()

Ghave ()

Sliver Overlord ()

Caltrops deals damage to flying creatures the same way Duskdale Wurm wears Trailblazer's Boots.

L1 Judge

"Alright men, we'll defend with base with caltrops and hold off the cavalry, just like we practiced."

"Sir, I don't think that's going to work."

"And why is that, sergeant?"

"Well, sir, they seem to be attacking with griffin riders."

"And?"

"Well, sir, it just seems like it wouldn't be very effective..."

"Throw the caltrops at them."

"...What?"

"I SAID THROW THE CALTROPS AT THEM! TO ARMS!"

And that, my dear, is how Caltrops hits flying creatures. Having good aim.
Also, the game isn't called Reality: The Gathering... the 'M'-word can answer many such questions.  ;)

It's sort of sad that Renasce has the most legitimate response.

LMAO. Good call... Sounds a bit more like goblins though.
But... but... aren't the rules on the cards complicated enough already?

Still, this would seem to be a simple enough qualification. Caltrops and Moat for example should indeed be somehow anti-reaching. Note, however, that horsemanship would confer no immunity to them.

Hmm. In fact, horsemanship should really only make creatures unblockable by cards within the Portal: Three Kingdoms expansion without horsemanship, if one really wants to be realistic...

Coming up with weird ideas to make everyone happy since 2008!

I have now started a blog as an appropriate place to put my crazy ideas.

The caltrops are really big. Nothing can fly over them.

They are magic homing caltrops, but the effect doesn't extend to your opponent's side of the battlefied.

Real life fact: I'm terrified of Grizzly Bears, Polar Bears... and bears that could potentially blink into reality through a time rift.
The answer, sadly OP, is that it is an old card. These days (what with resonance and top-down design etc) it wouldnt happen.

That makes no sense to me. If they spelled the ability out on the card in full then it would not be allowed in a mono-black Commander deck, but because they used a keyword to save space it is allowed? ~ Tim
Yup, just like you can have Birds of paradise in a mono green deck but not Noble Hierarch. YAY COLOR IDENTITY

I love this description. Like the cows are sponges filled with milk. I can see it all Nick Parks claymation-style with the cow's eyes bugging out momentarily as a giant farmer squeezes it like a squeaky dog toy, and milk shoots out of it.

It would probably read "creatures without flying" if made these days, but I still like the throwing explanation lol

Could be great fun with Death Pits of Rath, muahaha!

They're REALLY big caltrops.
As a policy all defence mechanisms are enchanted with Flying.

Wait till you see the Moat.
Same reason a Moat or Stormtide Leviathan can stop a crab shark (Shambleshark).

Also, why doesn't a BFM just step over a Moat?  or a wurm dig under it?

How are they  supposed to fly when they carry swords bigger than they are?

Are they African or European?

Try to pickture this: Giant Octopus + Flight

Would it not be an epic sight?
They can already walk around on land in real life so...

Powers as programs, people. Even Might of Oaks doesn't make your Cloud Sprite sink.

Caltrops is interesting because its art is bad, in all versions. Replace it with an art where it impales something that can fly over it. I don't care what you do, it'll be better.
