Planeswalker Avacyn???

Will Avacyn ever be made into a planeswalker? If she is, how long will it take?
Nope.

First, Innistrad's block is finished, so we won't hear about her until next Innistrad.
Second, angels can't be 'walkers because they don't have a soul; they're constructs of mana.
Third, she's so tied with Innistrad it wouldn't be a good thing to make her wander the multiverse when actually she's the guardian angel of Innistrad, without who its humans are doomed.

Yeah... Until next game, where it'll be right back. Seriously, there's no way to deal with Rancor in any format. It should be banned, except Gleemax is a lobbyist for the Rancor party, so that'll never happen.
You can't ban rancor, it just returns to your deck.

When talks about banning Jace first started, I was thinking that I would see him banned come June 20th. But as I think more about it, I don't really think that Jace is the problem anymore. Sure his power level leaves very little to the imagination (opening Jace is like opening a refrigerator box with a naked girl on the inside), and sure his price does have a strong impact on what players choose to play (playing Jace is like being intimate with a woman and she doesn't charge you in the morning), but it is not the source of all the problems in Standard.

How do people think saving room to print more abilities on cards is dumbing down the game?

Do you really think, say, Akroma would ever be printed if she said, "Akroma can block by creatures with this ability and cannot be blocked by creatures without this ability.  If a creature without this ability would deal combat damage by Akroma would be destroyed, prevent all combat damage that creature would deal to Akroma this combat.  Attacking does not cause Akroma to tap.  If Akroma is blocked and deals lethal damage, it deals the remainder of its damage to the defending player.  Akroma may attack and use abilities that require tapping in the casting cost the turn it enters the battlefield.  Akroma cannot be damaged, enchanted, equipped, blocked or targeted by black or red sources" rather than her "dumbed down" wording she has?  No freaking way.  Keywording and shorthand allows them to make complicated cards easy to play with, allowing them to be printed in the first place.

3. subsequently ask "will you attack this turn"? and "will you cast a spell this turn"? (using a Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir for the second question if necessary) to ensure they can't disrupt the combo
4. donate them a platinum angel
5. play a mox lotus and braingeyser them for every card in their library. play an opalescence and donate them a glorious anthem and a blacker lotus, then play enchanted evening. play and activate a mindslaver and then donate them a fastbond and the mox lotus (returning one of the donates to your hand with eternal witness or whatever)
6. during their turn, play every permanent in their hand (playing lands with fastbond) then (as yourself) cast mirrorweave on the blacker lotus, so every permanent becomes a copy of it. proceed to tear up every card they control, and hopefully do it before they notice that they aren't bound by staying power's ability anymore and can concede

I've netdecked plenty of decks from the Casual Play forums from users such as Mown, Raedien, Floopfoot, and a few others. I snatched straight the heck out of my web browser. Yes, people, your original idea fell victim to a savage netdecker. You have been assimiliated. Suppose I wanted a Zombie deck. Why on earth would I spend time searching Gatherer for a decent list of Zombie cards when Raedien already did it for me? No, they just spam them with ban requests. That being said, Magic was ruined back in Alpha when they added all that rules and cards [Debutantes avert your eyes]. This flow, sometimes called convection, is cited by frustrated box mappers as one of WOTC's most genious uses of thermodynamics since the Ravnica block. No one knows what lies at the core of the booster box, but scientists theorize that it must be especially dense in order to make up for the large amount of fluff distributed amongst the booster packs.

He proceeds to wring his hands and twirl his evil mustache that he grew for twirling purposes as a lightning bolt strikes in the background. Afterwards, he goes to make sure that the good cards are only opened by everyone's friends, and that we all only get to open bad cards. He does this by memorising each booster, than switching them around accordingly. Whenever someone complains about a card, he immediately jumps out from behind a chair to yell "WELL, IT'S NOT FOR YOU!" before merging back into the shadows in order to devise new ways in which he can screw over players, then claim that he has valid reasons for doing so.

But in real life, we can't actually do that, so the card spends a good bit of time in locations that are neither where that player's library is nor where that player's hand is. And that's fine for real life. What I don't want is the disconnect to be explicitly codified. Along the lines of

If you don't talk to anyone, that increases the odds that no one will talk to you.

JuliusPringle wrote:

So how do I just... introduce myself? "Hi, my name is Adam, wanna play magic with me?" Do I go to the counter and talk to the cashier?

Yeah. Talk to the cashier. Tell him/her that you want a Black Lotus, and if they don't have one tell them that the store isn't on par with what you expected.

Reach into your back left pocket. Pull out a deck list that you copied directly from some ChannelFireball top 8 Standard discussion, and ask for all the cards, as is, on that list. Then, ask for some random, probably terrible cards from whatever set is Standard legal. Say it's tech for the upcoming changes in the metagame.

Pull out a deck, and tell some random dude you wanna test (you have to use the term "test" for this to work) for Standard. Make sure that deck contains Kitchen Finks and Alluring Siren. Maybe throw in Nyxathid for good measure.

Finally, before you leave, spill (make it look like an accident) one hundred singleton, random cards onto the floor. Pick them up, put them in a pile, and say "EEE-DEE-AYCH".

I know this sounds dumb at first, but it will work. With the method outlined above, you will draw the attention of players that play older formats by asking for cards that no one on Earth can reasonably afford. You will get the attention of the wanna-be pro, Stomp-n00bz players by pulling out a well known decklist and declare that you have "tech" to make it better. You will get the attention of all the kind, helpful players by seemingly not knowing the most common format by having non-Standard legal cards in a deck that you claim is Standard legal. Finally, you catch all the rest of the Magic players by saying "EEE-DEE-AYCH" (EDH (or Commander)).

And there you have it. You will be talking to more people than you would have wanted to talk to in no time.

The only way Avacyn could be a Planeswalker would be if Sorin gave her a good sized chunk of his Planeswalker spark when he created her (or if she somehow got a hold of one through other means). So far this does not appear to be the case. Official WotC word is that she is not, but the way the answer was phrased leaves them wiggle room if they change their minds or have a reveal planned.

Unfortunately, VCLs do not currently have the tools necessary to take moderation actions directly. VCLs submit their actions to ORCs, who then actually perform the action. This processing can take between a few minutes and several hours, depending on how busy/attentive the ORCs are.

If you see something that needs VCL attention, please use this thread to make a request and a VCL will look at it as soon as possible. CoC violations should be reported to Customer Service using the "report post" button. Please do not disrupt the thread by making requests of either kind in-thread.

Why did you do this to us?
You should have just locked the thread, it's already been answered.

That answer, if anyone still hasn't caught it is "NO".
But how can you close the thread if no-one has suggested that she totally can be a planeswalker, because if Wizards want her to be a planeswalker, she will become one?

After the official forums lost most of their functionality, a once vibrant community of Vorthos was wiped out.The survivors founded a new place to discuss all things concerning with the art, flavor and storylines of Magic: The Gathering. Come join us.

But how can you close the thread if no-one has suggested that she totally can be a planeswalker, because if Wizards want her to be a planeswalker, she will become one?

No. And your comment barely deserves that response.

In the process, the clearing we call knowledge expands, but the more it expands, the longer its perimeter and the more ignorance comes into view." -Matt Ridley, Genome

But they dont

Jivan, you know better than that.
Sarcasm doesn't work on the internet.

Proper response:

First; Avacyn, and angels like her, are what is (are?) known as mana constructs. Beings made of magic. Demons are also mana constructs, as are some elementals. They aren't born in the traditional sense, they just kind of happen; or in Avacyn's case, . One of the requirements for having a latent spark is that you have to be born with it. Born being the key word. If you aren't a naturally occuring being, you can't just kind of accidentally develop a spark later.

Second; the process by which a non-Planeswalker can gain someone else's spark is patently absurd. Karn had to become the Legacy Weapon and absorb Urza's spark to do it; Memnarc converted the entire plane of Mirrodin into a machine to steal someone else's; Venser had the unique quality of being a teleportation prodigy and Karn was already an almagation of souls. Each of these circumstances was exceptionally unique and impossible to replicate. Besides, they're not going to have another non-natural walker because that makes Karn less special.

Third; Avacyn would be a terrible Planeswalker. In a meta sense, one of the requirements that Creative needs of a Planeswalker character is some sort of motivation to Planeswalk. Avacyn has none. She is a robot programmed by Sorin to maintain the balance of Innistrad. She has no drive beyond her purpose. Even if she became a Planeswalker, she would never Planeswalk. She's too busy keeping Innistrad's humans from going extinct. A Planeswalker who never Planeswalks would be a boring character, and R&D wouldn't be able to make lots of cards with thay character, making them marketting dead space.

There is no fun. Only Zuul.

Even if all forces in the Heavens and Infernos gave her a spark, why would it matter? She's bound to her plane's humanity.

Seriously?
What's the harm in people asking questions?

Yeah, it's silly but everyone starts somewhere.
One of the best parts of this forum is the accesibility; being toxic towards people breaking into the story is everything we shouldn't be doing.
Oof. That hit me right in my nagging internal doubts. >_>

I will gladly support the asking of questions. Sometimes the answers and follow up speculation more than make up for a moment's ignorance destroyed.
In a good way or bad way?

In an "I've been been thinking those same thoughts but ignoring the voice of my conscience because it was easier/more fun to just be a snarky ****" way.

While we should definitley try not to scare people off we do need to be strict. There is far too much room for stupid/uninformed questions and commentary with mtg lore.

Then again, I'm an information elitist so I may be biased.

To be fair, the question was answered before the rude reactions. On another note, I absolutely hate the word "snarky". Probably because the most irritating person I have ever known irl used it obsessively.

Yeah, it was already answered before it was ever tossed down the rabbit hole to flavor country.
It wasn't answered as thoroughly as we could have, but answered is answered.

But if that is the case, then how would Ob Nixilis be a planeswalker? He was a demon that lost his spark. and if they didnt think that a planeswalker who didnt planeswalk was a bad character, then they wouldnt make Elspeth Tirel.
Elspeth planeswalks all the time. The fact that she leaves Bant is absolutely crucial to her character, as is the fact that she COULD leave New Phyrexia but DOESN'T.

And Ob Nixilis was not a demon. Ob was a Planeswalker that took the form of a demon. He was trapped in that form when he lost his spark. We don't know anything more than that.

Avacyn would be the same. Could but won't. And I was lead to believe that all we know of Ob is what is printed on the card.

No, she could not be the same. Ever.

So what you are saying is that you don't understand any of the narrative structure or character arc involving Elspeth.
Yeah, I'm trying to not be harsh here, but you really don't understand the dynamic of Elspeth's character and why it has to work the way it does. Avacyn doesn't have the same kind of subjective experience as Elspeth. She's a highly complex AI, ultimately, and she obeys her prime directive to keep the balance on Innistrad. There isn't enough to Avacyn for her to actually have a character arc where she would have to consciously make the choice between leaving Innistrad and not leaving Innistrad. That's the important part--if she stays, there has to be a very particular reason why she would want to leave, and we have no indication of that being the case, at any point in her actions. She was willing to sacrifice herself to kill Griselbrand, remember.

You were misled about Ob.

I'm going to try and make the differnece a little clearer:

Elspeth spent much of her life running, trying to find a perfect plane. She found it in Bant, until the Conflux that is. Her choosing to stay on New Phyrexia is major moment of character growth for her to stop running and face her poblems (having been a phyrexian captive in the past helped with that). Elspeth works not because she can walk but doesn't, but because she's tempted to and stays anyways. in the case of Bant it worked because she had been traveling and found her goal.

Avacyn being a planeswalker would bring no temptation to break her orders. No conflict over leaving or going. A story point that would give no pay off.

Guys, I could be wrong here, but I think Jiv may have been referring to the idea that Avacyn could be like Ob; a 'Walker that lost her power and was trapped in the form of an angel.

Of course, this is silly for a number of reasons, but I can go conspiracy theory crazy and draw that line:

Let's say that when Sorin created Avacyn, he gave her a bit of his Spark.  In today's post-Mending world, that would be laughably hard to do, but pre-Mending Sorin might have managed it (wasn't Glacian's Spark split between two halves of a power-stone for centuries?).  This would make Avacyn a 'Walker of sorts right up until the Mending, where her chunk of Spark fails her and she is stuck as the angelic construct that she is.  If someone could find a spare Spark and plug it in the hole that was left behind, she could become a 'Walker again and go on some existential kick across the Planes looking for Sorin.

....

There, line drawn.  Now help me bury it before someone who doesn't know any better does something dumb with it.

@mikemearls The office is basically empty this week, which opens up all sorts of possibilities for low shenanigans

You rang? ^____________________^

Actually, I know it would be silly and ridiculously implausible for that to be a reality, but you had me at "kick across the planes looking for Sorin."  I think that is exaclty what she would do if she could.

For the record, Elspeth is no longer on New Phyrexia. She's gone off with Karn to search for other planes infected.

Patently untrue actually.
She doesn't recognize Sorin as anything special. To her, he's just another vampire.
Of course, that isn't true in reverse. He has control over her in ways she is completely unaware of.

That's interesting.  Deckhopper and I were/are actually talking about this in another thread.  We're both convinced that Sorin would have created Avacyn with some sort of awareness of who he is and what she is.  I have yet to hear anything official from Wizards regarding this, so I've always felt free to speculate. ^_^

Yeah, someone asked Brady something similar up top and that was the response he gave.
Avacyn really honestly doesn't have much character to her. She's essentially a robot in a lot of ways, and not the usual KILL ALL HUMANS kind.

I'm actually OK with that, because it kind of lines up more with a theory I had originally. ^,^
