You are on some floor of a building.

Each round, you will get criteria to design a card. At the end of the round, if you posted a card, you will be randomly paired against someone on the same floor or nearby who posted a card. If you win, you ascend 1 floor. If you lose, or you don't post a card for a round, you stay where you are.

If you are joining the contest for the first time, you'll start somewhere in the middle.

comprehensive rules
If you think I won't understand how your card meets the criteria, you may post an explanation.

You can't reuse a card from earlier in this contest but otherwise the submission rules are fairly relaxed (you can comment on each other's cards and you can reuse cards from your personal archive or from other contests).

Pairings will be determined starting from the top and going down.

In the case of a draw, a random player ascends.

If there are an odd number of players in a round, the unpaired player at the bottom will be paired against the lowest player who lost their pairing that round (this means one person gets two chances, but you can never ascend twice in a round).

If only one person posts in a round, they ascend 1 floor.

There can't be an empty floor at the end of grading. If there is, that floor is removed and everyone above comes down 1 floor.

New players will start on the highest floor such that there are at least as many players above them as below them.

The contest goes until whenever I feel like ending it. At that point, anyone not on the top floor will be eliminated, and the rest proceed elimination style until there is a single winner.

ROUND 1

New players this round start at floor 0

Criteria - Design a bad card. Not bad as in underpowered, bad as in bad design. The more subtly bad your card is, the better.

I guess I'll start.

Quick Escape
Instant
Shuffle target creature you control into your library.

Buyback
The quickest to run often survive as much as the hardest to hit.

All cards I make have artists credited in the appropriate places. Artist names in "quotes" are DeviantArt usernames unless otherwise mentioned.

"I play a Grave Betrayal. I get all your dead things now, mwahahahaha!"
"Okay. I play a Phage the Untouchable. Piss me off and I will sac it."
"... ... ... so guys, remind me again how to sac my own enchantments?"

I'll give it a try.

Openminded

Enchantment
All players play with their hands and libraries revealed.
All players may play cards from their libraries.
You should always keep an open mind.

The problems
1) When this enchantment enters the battlefield, you have to reveal your library, which should contain about 2-3 dozen cards at that time. But you must do so without changing the order of those cards, which means, you have to do so one by one. Same, when hiding those cards when the enchantment leaves the battlefield.

2) When you play cards from your library, it matters, which copy of the card you're playing, because that influences your draws. For example, by playing the lands near the top of your library, you can assure, that you won't draw any lands in the near future. Whereas if you play the lands near the bottom of the library, it won't affect your next draws at all.

3) Nothing allows you to change the order of the cards in your library, so you cannot rearrange them, but many players might be tempted to do so.

LOL, these criteria always come up right after a corresponding post I made in the forums...my Adorable Babies card would have fit perfectly...

Inspiration has struck!  Inspired by a conversation I had with Cats_and_Me on another thread, tweaked with my own stunning ability with lacking attention to detail:

Teasing Elf
Creature - Elf
Whenever you would gain life, instead draw that many cards then transform Teasing Elf.

Happy-Go Lucky Elf
Creature - Elf
Whenever you would draw a card, instead gain that much life and transform Happy-Go Lucky Elf.

I hope this tickles a few fancies.

Right, there is still one I can't figure out...either its really subtle, I'm really dumb, or it missed the criteria.

Definitely impressed with this criteria, even though I see it as a nightmare to grade.

This criteria is one of the most difficult I have seen without creating a card that is blatantly OP or color pie destroying.

Wow, 17 contestants, some of whom I haven't seen on the forums before. I wonder if it's because of the contest premise, the round criteria, the thread title or sheer luck? Nice to have you all here!

IceMetalPunk vs Matt_Holck

Quick Escape - This is a good 'trap' for newer players to fall into who don't realise that putting something back into your library is not much better than putting it into your graveyard, and it's got buyback to let them waste mana over and over! Brilliant!

Lag - Yeah it's pretty frustrating when the card that keeps something tapped down does not tap it in the first place, so sometimes you simply can't use the card, but that hasn't stopped R&D from making that kind of card before. To be fair, yours is an instant which makes it somewhat worse.

IceMetalPunk ascends!

rezzahan vs Kavu_Overlord

Openminded - I read your explanation, and while it is a bit physically challenging, it's not that much of an issue. Players had to keep their graveyards in order but revealed in the past. The fact that you can choose which copy to play seems like strategy more than an issue. It is a bad design because Enter the Infinite makes it redundant (and Enter isn't the best card to begin with) and because it's unnecessarily symmetrical, but I think I might like your card better than Enter anyway.

Ethereal Prowler - I think there are times in contests where functional reprints can be legitimate submissions, but this is not one of those times. Also, this is not a bad design. It's got synergistic abilities and encourages players to build around it.

rezzahan ascends!

POSValkir vs froofroo

Teasing Elf - You don't get points for the bad wording (these should be replacement effects, and the blue side should say you gain 1 life). You get minor points for having an elf in non elf colors. You get major points for forcing me to flip the card over just to flip it back over in my next draw step, especially if I'm using a sleeve.

Tin Street Teens - Apart from the colloquial flavor and being slightly out of color, there's nothing wrong with this card. I've designed something similar recently and think it's a good design to prevent creature stalemates.

POSValkir ascends!

ConfusedAsUsual vs Taramoor

Mass Substitution - This is a great card, which makes it a bad card to submit this round. I get to reuse all my enters the battlefield effects, and then get them again when I draw the cards from the top of my library, score.

Megreg, the Memory Scorcher - Slightly off color, narrow hoser that's occasionally going to be useful and really troll someone, or can be comboed with some obscure cards for an unfun result, yeah that seems like a pretty bad design.

Taramoor ascends!

Aaarrrgh vs ColonialDragons

Curse of Apathy - This is blatantly overpowered and griefy, sure it's bad design, but not subtle.

Turtle's Fury - Why did you second guess yourself? Without defender, this was pretty clever. You've got your upside ability, but then a weird drawback that tries to balance the card but is barely a drawback at all and a flavor justification that doesn't really justify why the two effects go together. With defender, both abilities are drawbacks so no one would use it and it's not as subtle. If you were worried about balancing your bad card, just reduce the toughness boost it grants.

ColonialDragons ascends!

SimonGlume vs theatog

Burrow and Flank - I like how this is a sorcery so that the first strike will never be relevant. I might say that having an ability that does nothing is too obvious, but the clever thing here is that at first glance it looks like it actually does something (till you realise its a sorcery). The phyrexian mana for no reason is a nice touch.

Amnesiac Therapy - So the idea here is the card requires a ton of extra work for very little benefit. It's also needlessly symmetrical. The fact that some people would be inclined to play it as part of a combo deck just adds to how bad it is (what's the point of trolling people if no one uses the card?)

The result is a draw. Random chance determines that SimonGlume ascends!

spikeymikey vs Zokorad

PJ's Clock - So we've got being off color for untap effects, and obvious broken combo potential. The key is not the power of the combo (even though that's an issue) it's that it's so easy to spot, so Johnny doesn't even feel clever for using it. By the way, what does PJ refer to?

Swapporz - This one was so subtle that I didn't even see what was wrong with it until I came to explicitly grade it. On the surface it looked fine. Then I realised you could choose not to play any cards and bring the game to a complete halt. Well played.

Zokorad ascends!

Fenix vs FrankyFourFingers

Griefing Denial - With that name and flavor text, you're basically shoving in my face what the problem with the card is. Not the best idea when you're meant to be subtle. Normally I would also say that it's an issue to be making people shuffle when you could just write buyback instead, but in this case the shuffle is what prevents the card from being completely broken, so your bad design has a good feature in it. Incidentally, you can actually do this card in real Magic for thirteen mana - Mystical Teachings for Cancel, cast Cancel, flashback teachings for a new teachings. But then again with that much mana you could just use Spell Burst.

FrankyFourFingers - Bad wording doesn't get you points. This is just Double Negative with unnecessary shuffling, but even then it could have a point against flashback spells.

Fenix ascends!

Cyranium vs Dudibus (Edited, because Dudibus posted a card while I was grading)

Warp - Tacking pointless abilities onto a card (in this case, the self mill) is a not very subtle way of making it bad. There's also the issue of who divides the piles and who chooses one, if it's you in both cases then the piles have no point. Fortunately you got an easy matchup.

Ancient Lich - There's a definite rules issue here that you need to have a judge looking over your shoulder if Ancient Lich is in a hidden zone such as your hand or library, but I'm not sure if that counts as bad design or the card would just not be printed. There's also the issue of being able to Green Sun's Zenith for 1 and put fourteen power worth of creatures onto the battlefield. This is an impressive example of how trying to be too clever with your design work results in an unprintable card.

Dudibus ascends!

Well that was fun to grade. There were some pretty good (as in bad) designs this round and there were some people who could have ascended but unfortunately got a tough matchup. Still, if your design chops are good, things should even out for you after a few rounds.

At the end of round 1, the building looks like this

When Nissa's experience was that of Zendikar it was natural that her abilities were so focused on the current plight of her world.  She was intent on using her powers to help her people. But since then she has travelled the planes and her mind has expanded and so to her power.  Her influence has blossomed past that of just elves, while still remaining strongly rooted in life and her connections to the planes she visits.

Perfect originality is overrated and often ugly. The best and most beautiful cards I've ever seen were clearly inspired by something else. Cards are not entirely unlike living organisms in this regard. All the good ones are a result of long evolution; the 'original' ones are either monocellular or mutant aberrations.

The weird part is reaching over the table, grabbing a card from their hand, and just staring slowly back at them, awkwardly, as you slide their voice of resurgence slowly into your pants.

Graveborn are strictly better than Zombies. I mean, look at that wicked beard. You try growing that when your dead. And I know aging fellows who are suffering from Male Pattern Baldness, who would kill for a Mop like Ribsy's over there.

+1: Discard a card at random. If you do, draw two cards.
-1: " " does damage to target creature equal to the number of cards in your hand.
-6: Put the top twenty cards of your library into your graveyard. Until end of turn, you may cast instant or sorcery spells from your graveyard without paying their mana costs.

Tibalt, the Painbringer

Planeswalker – Tibalt

[+1] Tibalt, the Painbringer deals 1 damage to target creature or planeswalker, and 1 damage to you.

[-3] Tibalt, the Painbringer deals 2 damage to target player. That player gets an emblem with "You can't gain life."

[-6] Choose a target player. That player may have Tibalt, the Painbringer deal any amount of damage to him or her. Then, that player sacrifices X lands, where X is his or her life total.

*shrug* It was more a statement than a submission. It may not be a bad design when looking at the card, but it's terrible design for the game as a whole.

Aww, Lilli's not an option? Okay, when I get home I'll look through the other inferior options :P

Lol, I'll explain my thought process:

1) White doesnt get card draw, blue doesn't get life gain.
2) The "bad design" was exactly what you pinged on.  The designer in this case forgot that every turn
you draw a card.  The effect was "supposed" to only trigger on spells.
3) Casting Cost on transform side.
4) The Elf in non-elf colors was...unintended and pure bad design Embarassed.

Not enough Gideon out there:

Gideon, Justice Incarnate
Planeswalker - Gideon
Whenever Gideon, Justice Incarnate is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, sacrifice all Avatars.
[+3] - Put a 6/6 white Avatar creature into play with "All damage that would be dealt to this creature is dealt to Gideon, Justice Incarnate instead."
[-1] - The next time a source would deal damage to an Avatar, instead that source deals that much damage to the source's controller.
[-16] - Exile all Non-Avatar permanents not named Gideon, Justice Incarnate.

Kinda drunk and lovin on Personal Incarnation from back in the day.  I may update this.

Design thoughts:

6/6 creatures are a strange bunch...they go from 4 CMC with significant drawbacks to...kinda random...since this is a Mythic, I think 5 CMC is a good cost for a 6/6 especially with the little mini-game this card sets up...although I could see 6.
