Forum Reorganization — Part Deux (Feedback Wanted)

Several months ago we implemented a large forum reorganization in the Magic area that I believe has been pretty successful. But, I've noted some areas that still seem lacking. Here is a proposed second (much smaller) round of changes:

Please scroll down to post #22 for the current proposal.

New Superforum
Community: A new superforum for Magic Boards Business and some new forums being created (described below). This forum would be placed after the Tournament Play. General Community would be renamed General Discussion (I thought about "Core Discussion Forums", but I don't want to confuse people with core sets).

New Forums
Find a Playgroup: I brought this idea up with the first reorg and the consensus was that there wasn't a need for it yet. Since, I've witnessed a slow but steady stream of people looking for players near X. This forum would go into the Casual Play Superforum.

House Rules & Formats: There have been several of these type of threads where I've had trouble deciding the appropriate forum; none of the existing forums are a satisfactory fit. So my solution is just to create one. I don't expect this forum to have a lot of traffic, but this sort of topic isn't generally topical, so I don't see that as being a big problem. Also, just the existence of the forum might spur people to create things for it. This forum would go into the Casual Play Superforum.

Off-topic Forum [Name to be determined]: It's recently been lamented that Magic doesn't have its own off-topic forum. Now it will. This forum would go into the new Community Superforum. Propose names below.

Marketplace: When we moved to the new boards, we tried moving the marketplace from a normal forum to a group for various reasons. Almost three years in, I think we can say that the move has turned out to be a failure, both because it is harder to find and because we are unable to move threads from the regular boards into the group. This will restore the marketplace as a normal forum. This forum would go into the new Community Superforum.

Retired Forums
Extended: I think it is time to put the Extended forums out to pasture. It might still be an official format, but it is completely unsupported and no one plays it anymore. If/when extended becomes a viable format again, we can recreate the forums.

Constructed Forum Reorganization
This idea is just coming to me, so it may not be totally fleshed-out yet. Block, Standard and Modern would be broken down into two forums: one for Regular REL play (e.g., FNM) & decklists and one for Competitive/Pro REL play & decklists. Legacy and Vintage would only have a Competitive/Pro REL forum, because non-competitive play is basically Casual and can go in Casual Decks. The Pro REL forums would also have a Decks to Beat/Tier-1 subforum. Using this pattern, here is how things would look:

Block Constructed — Regular
Block Constructed — Competitive
-- Decks to Beat
Standard — Regular
Standard — Competitive
-- Decks to Beat
Modern — Regular
Modern — Competitive
-- Decks to Beat
Legacy — Competitive
-- Decks to Beat
Vintage — Competitive
-- Decks to Beat

Sample blurbs
Standard — Regular
Discuss and post deck lists for Regular R.E.L. Standard events here (e.g., Friday Night Magic, Magic Game Days, Leagues).

Standard — Competitive
Discuss and post deck lists for Competitive/Pro R.E.L. Standard events here (e.g., PTQs, Grands Prix, SCG Opens, Pro Tours).

Standard — Competitive ==> Decks to Beat
A forum to list and describe the current Tier-1 decks in Standard. Please DO NOT CREATE new threads in this forum.

The "correct" forum for a deck is based on the level of critique the OP wants, NOT the actual competitiveness of the deck (except Decks to Beat, of course). So, a terrible decklist posted in the Competitive forum wouldn't be moved, but the OP should expect heavy criticism. Bullying of the OP for "posting in the wrong forum" would not be tolerated, though a simple "I don't believe this could be modified into a competitive deck" would be appropriate.

Note that all of these proposed changes, and any modifications I make based on feedback here, are subject to approval by WotC before implementation.

I could just cry.

I support this one hundred percent.

Are we still going to have a general landing forum for each constructed area? If so the regular/competitive/decks to beat subs should probably be labelled to the effect of '- Decks' or '- Deck Construction' and 'general' should be 'General Discussion'.

Thus:

Block General Discussion
- Block - Regular Deck Construction
- Block - Competitive Deck Construction
- Block - Decks to Beat

Standard General Discussion
- Standard - Regular Deck Construction
- Standard - Competitive Deck Construction
- Standard - Decks to Beat

Modern General Discussion
- Modern - Regular Deck Construction
- Modern - Competitive Deck Construction
- Modern - Decks to Beat

Legacy General Discussion
- Legacy - Competitive Deck Construction
- Legacy - Decks to Beat

Vintage General Discussion
- Vintage - Competitive Deck Construction
- Vintage - Decks to Beat

I understand it is wordy. But the regular don't need the abbrevations... and know where to go. But it isn't the regulars that clutter up with threads in unnecessary places.

My thinking was not. Any metagame or similar discussion would take place in the same forums as the deck critiques. So there would be two "top-level" forums, plus Decks to Beat as a sub to the competitive forum. However, I'm certainly willing to change that.

The Peanut Gallery? I would make a suggestion like 'The Commodore's Library', but I suspect only the F&S folks would get the reasoning.

Marketplace: When we moved to the new boards, we tried moving the marketplace from a normal forum to a group for various reasons. *sighs* Such potential, botched by poor software design.

Agree with this.

I like this breakdown a lot, especially the reasoning for thread placement between the deckbuilding forums, but with two important caveats:

First, last I checked the Decks to Beat subforums have been chronically, and at times even ridiculously out of date for a long, long time. In order to function properly DtB forums require a ton of maintenance...and that just doesn't happen. The post frequency on the Legacy DtB is measured in months, and on Vintage it's years. I just don't think they're needed.

My second caveat is that I think the general landing forums are useful; a discussion of ban lists, upcoming rotations, or the like doesn't really seem to be something that it's useful to split into one deckbuilding forum or the other.

Come join me at No Goblins Allowed

Because frankly, being here depresses me these days.

I second "The Commodore's Library".

Of course, I am a F&S folk.

The Reorg seems rational, although it feels weird that the Community will be so far down the page.

House Rules should be a subforum.

also why get rid of Extended? I agree it's basically dead, but this is the official WotC forums, so we should probably keep at least some semblance of acknowledgment for the existing formats. having it there does no harm.

Discussing the meta and discussing decklists are two things. I read Standard General religiously, but almost never open the deck forums. I am not interested in discussing specific decks, but the metagame as a whole. I'd be unsatisfied with the merging of the two.

How do people think saving room to print more abilities on cards is dumbing down the game?

Do you really think, say, Akroma would ever be printed if she said, "Akroma can block by creatures with this ability and cannot be blocked by creatures without this ability.  If a creature without this ability would deal combat damage by Akroma would be destroyed, prevent all combat damage that creature would deal to Akroma this combat.  Attacking does not cause Akroma to tap.  If Akroma is blocked and deals lethal damage, it deals the remainder of its damage to the defending player.  Akroma may attack and use abilities that require tapping in the casting cost the turn it enters the battlefield.  Akroma cannot be damaged, enchanted, equipped, blocked or targeted by black or red sources" rather than her "dumbed down" wording she has?  No freaking way.  Keywording and shorthand allows them to make complicated cards easy to play with, allowing them to be printed in the first place.

6. during their turn, play every permanent in their hand (playing lands with fastbond) then (as yourself) cast mirrorweave on the blacker lotus, so every permanent becomes a copy of it. proceed to tear up every card they control, and hopefully do it before they notice that they aren't bound by staying power's ability anymore and can concede

And I'm not talking about some Top 8 lists, for the Casualists, too, can benefit from netdecking. I've netdecked plenty of decks from the Casual Play forums from users such as Mown, Raedien, Floopfoot, and a few others. I snatched straight the heck out of my web browser. Yes, people, your original idea fell victim to a savage netdecker. You have been assimiliated. Suppose I wanted a Zombie deck. Why on earth would I spend time searching Gatherer for a decent list of Zombie cards when Raedien already did it for me? Taking time to be creative or waiting on people on the forums to tell you why your deck sucks or 'go to Casual forums' is a disasterous waste of time (to me).

But in real life, we can't actually do that, so the card spends a good bit of time in locations that are neither where that player's library is nor where that player's hand is. And that's fine for real life. What I don't want is the disconnect to be explicitly codified. Along the lines of

I know it's true, but I don't want the rules to actually straight-up tell me that.

If you don't talk to anyone, that increases the odds that no one will talk to you.

JuliusPringle wrote:

So how do I just... introduce myself? "Hi, my name is Adam, wanna play magic with me?" Do I go to the counter and talk to the cashier?

Yeah. Talk to the cashier. Tell him/her that you want a Black Lotus, and if they don't have one tell them that the store isn't on par with what you expected.

Reach into your back left pocket. Pull out a deck list that you copied directly from some ChannelFireball top 8 Standard discussion, and ask for all the cards, as is, on that list. Then, ask for some random, probably terrible cards from whatever set is Standard legal. Say it's tech for the upcoming changes in the metagame.

Pull out a deck, and tell some random dude you wanna test (you have to use the term "test" for this to work) for Standard. Make sure that deck contains Kitchen Finks and Alluring Siren. Maybe throw in Nyxathid for good measure.

Finally, before you leave, spill (make it look like an accident) one hundred singleton, random cards onto the floor. Pick them up, put them in a pile, and say "EEE-DEE-AYCH".

I know this sounds dumb at first, but it will work. With the method outlined above, you will draw the attention of players that play older formats by asking for cards that no one on Earth can reasonably afford. You will get the attention of the wanna-be pro, Stomp-n00bz players by pulling out a well known decklist and declare that you have "tech" to make it better. You will get the attention of all the kind, helpful players by seemingly not knowing the most common format by having non-Standard legal cards in a deck that you claim is Standard legal. Finally, you catch all the rest of the Magic players by saying "EEE-DEE-AYCH" (EDH (or Commander)).

And there you have it. You will be talking to more people than you would have wanted to talk to in no time.

Several months ago we implemented a large forum reorganization in the Magic area that I believe has been pretty successful. But, I've noted some areas that still seem lacking. Here is a proposed second (much smaller) round of changes:

I'd still like to see the FAQ forum not be a subforum of RQ&A.  It takes up real estate at the top of the RQ&A page, and we're still getting posts in the FAQ forum.

We should rename the Multiplayer forum to Other Casual Formats instead. It would serve the same purpose that it does now except it would also cover all casual formats including home-brewed formats and not just multiplayer. Two-player Tibal Wars, Chaos, and Prismatic would all belong here. Multiplayer deck critique would go in Casual Decks.

I wote the little blurb that goes under the forum name:

Other Casual Formats
Discuss Planechase, Archenemy, and any other fun way to play Magic either multiplayer or one-on-one.

Casual Play
- Casual Decks
- Commander (EDH)
- Cube Draft
- Other Casual Formats
Cube draft should be folded into limited.

Dealing with the constructed sections is quite a hassle, which I can say from personal experience trying to get things better there when I was an active VCL.  One of the problems is that for the Decks to Beat sections, there are hardly ever enough willing contributors and I didn't have enough knowledge and/or time to do threads for every single deck to beat.  And then there's the deal with having to update the section as the format changes.  I tried asking for volunteers for Standard, but that took weeks to get all of the decks I wanted in.  I hadn't tried doing the same for Modern, Legacy, or Vintage, but I'd imagine it would be much worse there.  There really isn't a good solution to this issue with the present level of activity here.  I like the idea of making them all consistent, but I just don't see it being feasible.  There's a reason they weren't all in the same format and the activity issue is why...

It is a good idea to combine the many subforums. Too many subforums are hard to maintain and moderate. Sometimes people complain about the level of activity in those forums, and simplifying the places that people need to look will make it easier to read and post in those forums.

Instead of having Decks to Beat subforums, there should just be one sticky thread in the competitive forum. Users cannot delete or move threads, so a subforum with only authorized threads is too hard to maintain. It does not work now, and we would continue to have the same problems. A user should create a thread called "Decks to Beat for March" and list the current winning decks with links to the discussion thread for each each deck. They should also include an introduction about how Decks to Beat works. That user can easily edit the opening post as things change. At the end of the month or when that thread becomes outdated a new user or the same user can create "Decks to Beat for April", and they only need to put in one request to sticky the new thread.

I do not think Block Constructed is played much at FNM or casually. It is usually played as part of the Pro Tour Season. It also does not get much activity, so it should just have one forum like Legacy.

I agree with Zammm that there should be a place to talk about more general topics. I think the regular forum should be called Standard, and they can go in there. The competitive forum should be a subforum of Standard.

Tournament Play
- Standard
-- Standard — Competitive
- Modern
-- Modern — Competitive
- Block Constructed — Competitive
- Legacy — Competitive
- Vintage — Competitive
- Limited (Sealed and Draft)
Could House Rules & Formats include un-set rulings? Maybe even a sticky collecting all of the rulings thus given? (I'd be willing to write it) MaRo has answered these questions in a variety of places, including private emails. Currently,  un-rules questions don't fit anywhere but general.

When talks about banning Jace first started, I was thinking that I would see him banned come June 20th. But as I think more about it, I don't really think that Jace is the problem anymore. Sure his power level leaves very little to the imagination (opening Jace is like opening a refrigerator box with a naked girl on the inside), and sure his price does have a strong impact on what players choose to play (playing Jace is like being intimate with a woman and she doesn't charge you in the morning), but it is not the source of all the problems in Standard.

4. donate them a platinum angel
5. play a mox lotus and braingeyser them for every card in their library. play an opalescence and donate them a glorious anthem and a blacker lotus, then play enchanted evening. play and activate a mindslaver and then donate them a fastbond and the mox lotus (returning one of the donates to your hand with eternal witness or whatever)
6. during their turn, play every permanent in their hand (playing lands with fastbond) then (as yourself) cast mirrorweave on the blacker lotus, so every permanent becomes a copy of it. proceed to tear up every card they control, and hopefully do it before they notice that they aren't bound by staying power's ability anymore and can concede

Everyone's life would be easier if players would, instead of coming to the 'net for help with a deck, just netdeck and be done with it.

No, they just spam them with ban requests. That being said, Magic was ruined back in Alpha when they added all that rules and cards [Debutantes avert your eyes]. My friends and I still like playing it the "pure" way (Basically we go into the woods and hit eachother with wiffle bats while shouting made up obscenities. Don't worry about it. Also decks have no color identity. -Starting life total is 20. And voila, now things are balanced.

Here's a clever play you can try yourself: -Convince friend to run relentless rats.dec in legacy tournament -Get a deck with lots of mill, yixlid jailer, and humility -Drop humility and jailer, wait for him to dump his hand, mill him out -All his rats now have no abilities. Call a judge because he's playing an illegal deck with more than 4 of a single card. -Get him/her banned from competitive magic play

This flow, sometimes called convection, is cited by frustrated box mappers as one of WOTC's most genious uses of thermodynamics since the Ravnica block. No one knows what lies at the core of the booster box, but scientists theorize that it must be especially dense in order to make up for the large amount of fluff distributed amongst the booster packs.

He proceeds to wring his hands and twirl his evil mustache that he grew for twirling purposes as a lightning bolt strikes in the background. Afterwards, he goes to make sure that the good cards are only opened by everyone's friends, and that we all only get to open bad cards. From the game's perspective, the card can move instantly from face down in the library to revealed in the hand and that's fine for the rules. But in real life, we can't actually do that, so the card spends a good bit of time in locations that are neither where that player's library is nor where that player's hand is. And that's fine for real life. What I don't want is the disconnect to be explicitly codified. Along the lines of
183664.697 A game of Magic as laid out by these rules exists only as a pure Platonic ideal, utterly unrealizable by fallible mortals limited by the confines of physicality and the ravages of evil and sin. 183664.698 The cake is a lie, too.

Real men hold shift. If everyone has their fingers in the pie, then someone is eating fingers.

I would be fine with this, as a whole separate forum (let alone the two some now have for tier-1 and tier-2) always struck me as overkill. But I'd like more feedback from the constructed folks on this.

There are a couple other changes to consider:
1) Merge Event Announcements and Event Discussion and move the result to Tournament Play. They would fit naturally there and we could eliminate the Sanctioned Events superforum.
2) Reorder the Superforums as below

I think we should drop the word "theory" from the Rules and Templating forum and the Design and Development forum, because it is redundant, and it looks nicer without it. It is silly to repeat the word "theory" three times. The word "and" should be spelled out, so both forums match.

Art and Artists should be combined with Storylines. Art and Artists basically died when the forum was overhauled and most people that post there also post in Storylines. So you are just splitting up the posts. The new forum should be called Art and Fiction.

You Make the Card should be moved into Creative Discussion as well, because both forums involve the users creating something new and discussing topics outside of the strict confines of playing the game.

Creative Discussion
- Art and Fiction
- You Make the Card

Daily MTG Article Discussion should be spelled like that with a capital T in MTG. That is the way it is always spelled on the website. I also think MTG — Duels of the Planeswalkers should be spelled like that without a colon, so they are consistent.
I think we should drop the word "theory" from the Rules and Templating forum and the Design and Development forum, because it is redundant, and it looks nicer without it. It is silly to repeat the word "theory" three times.

only if you look at the superforum name. I'd rather say "Design and Development Theory" than "Design and Development, in the Advanced Theory superforum".

Unfortunately, VCLs do not currently have the tools necessary to take moderation actions directly. VCLs submit their actions to ORCs, who then actually perform the action. This processing can take between a few minutes and several hours, depending on how busy/attentive the ORCs are.

If you see something that needs VCL attention, please use this thread to make a request and a VCL will look at it as soon as possible. CoC violations should be reported to Customer Service using the "report post" button. Please do not disrupt the thread by making requests of either kind in-thread.

Last I checked, WotC wanted the Digital Games section higher up in the listing.

Because frankly, being here depresses me these days.

I'd like to volunteer to create and maintain the Vintage DtB thread.

I'd like to nominate MadAdmiral for the Legacy DtB thread, and if he doesn't want to do it I'll discuss with the other Legacy regulars.
Etiamnunc sto, etiamsi caelum ruat.
Do the Eternal Formats really have enough traffic to warrent subforums for DTB etc.?

Maybe Modern, but Vintage and Legacy are basically dead. I think just a sticky at the top linking to DtBs and archetype  threads would be sufficient. I'd rather have a central location for everyone to look which might actually increase traffic than split up an already struggling forum.

Keep in mind I was a huge proponent of getting a DtB subforum in the legacy forums when we actually had traffic. Now, it just doesn't make much sense and the posters who used to maintain the DtBs are long gone (heck, I am the author of 2 and I hardly check them).

One forum, at this point in time, would be best. At least for Vintage and Legacy.

That's what we are discussing; the subforums are going away, to be replaced by stickied threads in the appropriate forum. I'm volunteering for the Vintage thread.

Legacy definitely needs a thread on the basis of meta size and evolution (large and fast, respectively). I think MadAdmiral is the person for that, as he is always the most up-to-date on Tiers, Archetypes, and Top 8 numbers.

Now that you mention it though, Tim, I think I'll try and rouse some support for the Eternal formats, especially Vintage.

Ah. Ok, great. For some reason, when I read your previous post I read "DtB Forum" instead of "DtB thread."

Glad to hear things are getting simplified.

since we have a wiki function anyway, wouldn't that be a good way to do DtBs? that way you don't lose all the work when one of the authors leaves. have one stickied thread at the top of the forum called "Decks to Beat", and have it have links to all the wiki pages, where people can discuss and edit as things happen?

We have a wiki?? I did not know this.

There is the main wiki you can find by clicking on "Wiki" in the navigation bar at the top of the page or by linking to it from your personal profile. Indivdual groups also have their own personal wikis as well.

I put in the request mid-week, so as soon as WotC approves and implements. Could be any day now.

Me neither, but I am sad =( Legacy and Vintage could really use those DtB threads.

I'm recently back to the forums so maybe it's just that I'm not up to speed but what happened to the profile signatures? I can't find the option to add or edit.
