Character Builder: Trouble getting 1h + shield to work & Implement bonus

Hey guys,

I'm making a Minotaur Bard for my friend to play in the campaign we're running. He really wants to be a minotaur bard. I've been reading up on Valorous Bards and I know if you take the Swordmage Multiclass feat, you can use a heavy blade as an implement for the powers. Is there something I'm missing here though? I can't get 1h Bastard sword + Shield to work in the builder, and the proper attack bonus isn't being applied to the Bard implement powers. Anyone know what might be going on?

probably not related but I did just discover that arm slot items negate shield magical qualities, so there may be an item conflict there. Perhaps try removing other items and re-equipping to see what works and what doesn't. 
Also the bastard sword is actually a superior weapon, so there may be a proficiency issue.
