Missing material in the Expanded Multiverse

I realized over the last few hours (backing up the M:EM archives) that phyrexian-hailstorm's art (remember him?) is completely gone from the internet because his account has been completely and utterly deleted. And I don't just mean, "he doesn't post any more," or "his account is gone," I mean everything is gone. There are quotes of his posts where the actual post is missing. We have lost his work for all time. That makes me sad.

But I bring this up because I'm not sure on the procedure for removing the threads in the archive that had his work in it. I stil have access to the Archivist account so I should be able to do that, but is that all? Like, should there be a notice post/thread in the M:EM that this has happened?

And before anyone says so, I did use google. There was only one result of his Ren vs. Vasilias that only existed in thumbnail. Clicking on the image gave a blank white square.

wow, you're right

Unfortunatley, a quick HD scan suggests I never downloaded any of those pieces.

Okay, update: I have backed up everything in the archive PROPER. That means I've got everything under Planes, Characters, Artifacts, and Works sections. Now I've turned my eyes to Archive adjustments, but I have to ask what exactly is in there? Like, how much of that should be saved? I'm almost certain that the "Great Character Adjustment Thread (Denna)" doesn't need to be saved.

And then there's the Dross, where dead ideas have gone. Some of those might be interesting to save, but are there any that are worth it? I mean, most of those, I believe, have become trashed because their original owners are no longer on the boards.

So, what are everyone's opinions on this?

Isn;t most of the Alara stuff still stewing in the limbo of Archive Adjustments?

If you're not pressed for storage space, no reason to not back up the Dross and WiP.  It'll take time, but it's not like we only get to keep what we can back up before some cosmic deadline.

It seems that way in regards to the Alara stories. But I don't know why they are there.

I'll be kind of weeding out some of the WiP and Dross threads. Like, we don't need the Dross thread "The Pit Fighters" when we've got "The Pit Fighters - Short Stories" in WiP.

Oh, and also I am seriously worried about the future of the Wizards forums now.

Maybe we should isolate ourselves to a far off portion of the internet and collect every scrap of Magic flavor possible in a giant compendium to help perserve flavor knowledge through the dark age of the Wizards' Forum collapse (which will inevitably lead to a flood of trolls and flamers spilling over to other forums and inciting wars that will eventually lead to to total collapse). We could call the community something cool like "Foundation".

Then on the other side of the internet we secretly install a shadowy cabal of moderaters and admins that subtly manipulate the collapse of the fora in such a way to expose the flaws in the existing system, and then oversee the coming dark age to ensure it does not deviate from the plan towards the re-emergenance of a stronger and more powerful forum. We could call this something silly like "Second Foundation".

As long as we steer clear of mutant telepaths, near ominpotent robots, intragalatic Selesnya conspiracies, and copyright lawsuits I don't see how any of this could go wrong!

Hey now, hey now.

First, "Second Foundation" is a far too normal name. Let's go for "The Crust off the Bread."

Secondly, wouldn't it just be easier to build a massive firewall and hunker behind it while we send our Dark Lord Barinellos to dissolve the very essence of said fora from within?

This makes me feel sad...

After the official forums lost most of their functionality, a once vibrant community of Vorthos was wiped out.The survivors founded a new place to discuss all things concerning with the art, flavor and storylines of Magic: The Gathering. Come join us.

Honestly, if we're going this far, we might as well invest in our own server. We can call it the MultiVerse Archival Computer.

Hm, that's a mouthful. Maybe Multivac?

(I have some suggestions on who should be the Mule, but I don't feel like getting this account suspended, too... >_>)

@42: Save anything in the Dross that you personally feel like going to the trouble of saving. You're doing the work so you get to call the shots.

And yeah, I'd say we might as well just delete any dangling traces of Hailstorm's stuff. :/ I wish he hadn't ragequitted the Internet, but there's nothing we can do now I guess.

The Alara stories are in limbo because the anthology isn't done. Hahahahahahaha. Hahahaha. [cries]

Even if this forum doesn't die, this is still a good thing to be doing. Part of my goal with M:EM is to archive CANON materials as well, since we've lost so much over time. It makes absolutely zero sense to have our whole archive sitting on a subforum that could collapse because Obvious Beta at any moment, for all we know.
The M:EM is guest accessible. That means the way back machine at archive.org might have saved snapshots of Hailstorm's posts or any other missing materials. Just throwing the option out here, I never get it to work myself, but you guys know better what and when to search for than I do anyway .

But does that mean they should stay in Archive Adjustments or be moved to the Works section?

Yeah, they should be moved. We can create a single thread, though, that includes the index, and when the PDF is done we can provide a link to that as well.

Also, give me a list of all the works that SHOULD HAVE HAD Hailstorm art.

Also also, there was... something else...

Oh! When you have a full list of archived materials, let me know so I can start cross-referencing stuff. I think some things are in the Archive but not listed in the Archive's index. I'm pretty sure Scargotto, for example, never made the list because I kept forgetting to fix the formatting. Too many irons, too many fires, &c. &c. ::::/

Terti, you... are a mastermind. Well done, sir. I'm kicking myself that I didn't think of that. I'm not sure it'll work since it would have to have been crawled in the right timeframe, but I can at least look.

Really, though, thanks. And I'm sorry I blew up at you a while back, for the record.

Off the top of my head for hailstorm art: Molcru & Fala; Acharu's World Tree; Renn vs. Vasilias; Ariva.  Those are, at least, what got voted in and are still there in the archives. But I remember him working on other things, like Raef and Barinellos's Ophanim from Ellysium.

I'll take care of the archive when I've got some time over the week. If you can have multiple tabbed instances of the same user posting in different threads, there shouldn't be any reason that multiple instances of the same account can be used at once. It is in my best interest to make sure the archives are up-to-date, after all.

I still have his roughs of Rishima in various stages, though the most finished one is also the smallest.

Thanks for making the gesture, but really, don't worry about it. I tend to let go of things really quickly myself and definitely don't want you to be bothered about it either (or any other people with whom I argue, for that matter :$).

I did a small check, and the M:EM has indeed been crawled, a couple of times, going back to 2010. Hailstorm's posts show up at several moments in the forum index list as posted here-and-there, but the one individual thread I clicked had its crawl to a later date than the index (or no crawl at all) and had not saved Hailstorm's post. So yeah, the potential is there both for success and disappoint. Probably the former if unlike me you know in which areas he used to post the save-worthy materials :$.

I... Wish I knew what you were talking about there, Terti.

Anyways, UPDATE:

I added Ruwinreborn's story Zachari Lavar, the Good Pontif to the Archive and edited in the other voted-in-but-not-moved-to-the-archive material. Namely, the Ikass expansion Delitty and Ariva. It's a direct copy/paste on the latter, though, so it could probably stand some improvements. I'll take a look at it when it's not 4 in the morning and see what to do to it.

I also "moved" Barinellos's story Violent Ultimatum and Skibo's story Reven's New Flesh to the Archive proper. I haven't actually done anything with the threads that were in the Archive Adjustments, I just made new threads so everything looks squeaky and new. I'm not sure what to do with the Adjustments-based threads, though; I'm always wary of deleting material.

As a disclaimer: I figured since Skibo's been missing for... what, at least half a year now?, I figured it wouldn't be against anything to move his stories from the Adjustments to the Archive proper; especially since Reven's New Flesh had been worked on in the past, and he had even put together a "finalized" version.

I just wanted to chime in with a few words regarding the concern about the future of these forums. I am quite certain that the forums will survive, and that for one reason: these forums survive everything. I was here when Wizards launched Gleemax. Evereyone was sure that it would be the end of the forums. The forums survived. I was here when a large number of the most prolific posters of the time ragequitted the forums. The forums survived. I left the forums, not because I didn't like them, but because I didn't have the time for them. The forums survived. I returned, three years later, and found that even though Gleemax and all the people I used to know on here were gone, the forums still survived. And when I came back I decided to stay, for one reason. I could see that there are people here who care for the forums, who seek to post quality material, wether it's creative works, YMTC, or general banter. The forums are defined by the people who use them, and you are people who use them well. If you are worried about the future of these forums, invite people to join us. If they get greeted the way I did when I first came into M:EM, they'll want to stay.

tl;dr: You guys are great, which means the forums are great, even if some cool people have gone missing.
