We are currently in round 3, so signups are closed. The criteria for defenders this round is to make a card that affects how much mana you have either this turn or subsequent turns

Additional rules: Items
If you have an item you can use it in every round you enter except when there are 4 or fewer players still alive. It doesn't carry on to the next contest, though.
As winner of the first Fight or Die, Edacade can choose one of these items before posting his card. The other item will be given to a random survivor at the end of round 1.

Helmet of Lightning
If you are a defender and don't get attacked, you have no chance of being randomly eliminated. You don't count towards the minimum threshold for determining if a player should be randomly eliminated.

Blade of Backstabbing
You can attack a defender who has already been attacked by someone else earlier in the round. Either the defender beats both attackers, or else the defender dies and both attackers live.

Remember, attacking cards need to be similar to the corresponding defender in some way - not simply a card that could answer the defender's card in a game of Magic.

For example, you might make a card that has the same mana cost or the same card type or is used for the same purpose or which contains a similar ability. Etc

Ulcaster - interesting card, maybe too similar to anemones or fathom mage, and the opponent has little incentive to kill it and give you the cards if it can't hurt them.

Attacker, TheFlameReaper - I don't really like the idea of a creature that does literally nothing without support from the tribe especially if its a tribe that's harder to build around. It's interesting how its easier to continually grow this guy than the evolve guy but drawing cards scales better than discarding cards. Again it's gonna be hard to have this guy killed to get the effect due to the drawback, and using a sac outlet as well as eat tribal seems too much work.

Ulcaster survives.

Metalevolence - all those abilities seem really powerful, particularly the first can be really swingy like they discard three creatures and you none. I do like how instead of hosing the opponent you can set up your own combo, but it seems pretty easy to just enter the infinite.

Attacker, an endless epidemic - I like the garruk vs Liliana thing. Being able to play an extra land once you're already up to four won't do much though unless you're drawing lots of cards - it's make more sense for that to be a plus ability. The first ability is a rip off of koth. The ultimate should be an emblem (why not? And at least then it could synergize with the second ability).

Metalevolence survives.

GerogeW - by the time this vanishes, you'll probably have cast all your cards so its just tidings for two mana. I'm not even sure it should be black, though I like the flavour.

Attacker, SimonGlume - I'm not seeing any similarity to George's card, except that they're both nuts in Legacy. In any other format where the game goes longer its gonna miss a lot.

GeorgeW survives.

Edacade is not attacked and survives.

To be continued
POSValkir - If you put this on an opponent's creature, there aren't many situations where it would be worse than Arrest, who cares if it's indestructible if it's been taken care of? The flavor is cool though.

Attacker, Cyranium - I can't see the similarity between your card and his. Why would you ever not exile this when it goes to the graveyard? And is that ability meant to work when it goes to graveyard from anywhere (like if I discard or mill it?)

POSValkir survives.

Attackers are gonna have to step up their game!

There are 5 players for the next round. If you don't show up before I end the round you will be considered an unattacked defender and may be randomly eliminated. These players are

POSValkir
Edacade
GeorgeW
Metalevolence
Ulcaster

Metalevolence recieves the Blade of Backstabbing (see original post for description).

If you choose to post as a defender this round, you must design a creature whose main job is attacking the enemy player to reduce their life total.

Attackers don't have to follow this criteria, but they still have to make a card that's similar to the corresponding defender in some way. Remember you can clarify if you think I won't get it.
Why would I accept a Helmet that prevents me from being eliminated as a defender if I'm not going to abuse it?

Also, despite not being attacked last round, may I have comments on my card? I'm curious as to what your opinion of my Blind Basilisk is.

Thanks, I designed it to either be an Arrest for the opponent which would make it hard to remove Stab Wound affects; or to protect a creature of yours with an awesome triggered ability.

Your basilisk is alright. Obviously the point is that the opponent should only attack with a single large creature unless they dont mind suiciding someone. It doesn't feel very green - apart from deathtouch, the other abilities and the p/t seem white. The flavour is good, but I think you didn't need quite so many words to communicate it.

Ah, well...I was kind of thinking about how green is an ally with red and red has high efficiency with the "force attack" ability. But green is also allies with white, so...I don't know. But I can see where the triggered ability can be white. I don't consider the p/t to be white, though. Or to be in any specific color, period.

just a note on my last card, it says "a card" of the chosen type, not "each card." I'm not THAT crazy... but a discard spell that costs four mana has to be pretty impressive to see any use.

round 2 thing to come soon
Why would I accept a Helmet that prevents me from being eliminated as a defender if I'm not going to abuse it?

Defender

Frenzy Elemental
Creature-Elemental
~ has frenzy X, where X is the number of creature cards in defending player's graveyard.
Whenever ~ attacks, defending player loses 3 life unless he or she sacrifices a creature.
0/3

Hopefully we're not required to come up with good names.

helmet that works if you don't get attacked? guess someone better attack you then!

Hemorrhage Riders
Creature - Zombie Warrior
Haste
Whenever Hemorrhage Riders attacks, you lose 3 life and defending player sacrifices a creature.
At the beginning of your end step, if Hemorrhage Riders didn't attack this turn, sacrifice it.
3/3
Edacade - You don't need to think up good names unless you're trying to convey a strong flavor. I can't think of many situations where I would choose to sacrifice a creature to the second ability, especially if it was the only creature that could block to prevent the frenzy. However it does have a nice build up feel to it that unless you can actually kill it by blocking (which isn't too hard on a 3 toughness creature, especially since I can gang block it without losing a single creature), it's eventually going to get way out of hand. There's a bit of anti-synergy in that even if you put Whispersilk Cloak on it (and what creature isn't better with a cloak on), the opponent is usually better off taking 3 than increasing the frenzy amount, even if the creature they could sacrifice is completely useless to them.

Attacker, metalevolence - The Nefarox / Thraximundar ability is very strong on a 4 mana creature as it can lock the opponent out of the game. I like how you attempted to prevent this by making the player eventually have to sacrifice it because they can't afford to pay the life any more, but unless the opponent is chump-blocking your Riders, they'll probably be dead before you're forced to sacrifice it.

Is making a narrow creature worse than creating an unfun game state? I think metalevolence's card shows off an interesting design idea even if not executed well, so he wins the fight.

GeorgeW - I assume the first ability is meant to be a triggered ability. It's bad to give two options that are so far apart in power level (losing 1 life or giving a beast thats gonna whack you for four in the same turn, of course you would take the 1 if you could spare it). This doesn't completely fit the criteria as I wouldn't normally want to risk my 2/2 with an epic ability by attacking with it, I'll just attack with all my other creatures for free beasts and etc. It is a nice spin on the usual extra attack step as it actually gives you more guys to attack with though.

Attacker, POSValkir - One problem with this card is it's a bit hard for the reader to understand what it does on the first read-through. It seems like it could be a lot simpler if it just said "whenever a creature enchanted player controls deals combat damage to a player, that player draws a card." (although I get that you were trying to follow the criteria by using a similarity with George's card). Making this a curse to affect an opponent rather than making it a positive ability for yourself (something like Isperia, Supreme Judge) actually has the opposite effect in multiplayer games than when they did a similar thing with Curse of Stalked Prey - instead of discouraging anyone from attacking you, your card just discourages the cursed player from attacking anyone.

Is making a newbishly designed card that doesn't really fit the criteria worse than making a complicated card that results in worse gameplay than a simple version? Well the thing in contests (as well as in school exams) is the criteria is step 1. You don't follow that, the rest doesn't matter. POSValkir wins this fight.

Ulcaster is not attacked and survives (yes, this contest is a bit weird!)

So, the penultimate round. The three survivors are

Ulcaster
POSValkir
metalevolence

Remember you can't use items now that there are four or less players alive.

Will we get two defenders and the last player decides who to fight?
Will we get a defender and an attacker and the last player gets a free pass to the finals (like what happened this round?)
Will we get three defenders and leave it up to random chance?

Criteria for defenders this round: Make a card that affects how much mana you have either this turn or subsequent turns. It could be a mana ramp, a mana artifact, a boost or a storage (examples - Rampant Growth, Manalith, Dark Ritual, Iceberg). If you think you can come up with a card that fits the criteria but doesn't meet one of those four categories, clarify what you're doing and make the card (but nothing dumb like Grizzly Bears affects your mana by taking two outta your pool when you cast it).

Attackers, you know your job.

Whether you're still alive, or eliminated, tell me what you think of the contest format. Would you participate in a fight or die 3?
Huh. I forgot to post something for the last round, but I guess I made it through anyway. Cool.

I like this contest and would definitely participate in future rounds. Maybe you could expand the items we can use, though. I didn't really see any need to use them, but if there were more options I probably would have grabbed one. Otherwise, I enjoyed it.

Yeah, I had a rough time designing the card, but I noticed George's didn't hit the criteria very well, so I posted my complicated card for feedback rather than starting over.

I was trying to design a card that forced your opponent to either not attack at all, or attack once and give the opponent some advantage before you actually attack.  The flavor was...ugh, trying to write out the flavor I realize its the ending to the last Twilight movie, I was going for the Uchiha's Mangekyo.  Basically you make the opponent think they're attacking you.  You get to see their battle plan and abilities.  Then they flash back to the real world and have to decide how best to proceed now that they know you know what they planned...wow, my explanation of the flavor isn't any easier to follow than the card (I even had to read my own card three times to figure it out.)

You're right, multi-player really gunks up the design.  I didn't even consider that in the initial design.

oh man oh man.  Looks like the choice is up to me.  I think the gentlemanly think to do would be choose defender...but the sportsmanly thing would be to attack.  Choices.  I will post soon, my boss is flipping out about something he believes to be super-important, so I'll design something when I calm him down.

Submission pending.

Also, I really like this contest.  The items are interesting, but they definitely let you game the contest a bit.

The contest would be off the chain if more people participated.  I will definitely participate again.

Some transparency, if it helps your decision -

In a 3-player round, if everyone goes defender, the first defender to post their card has 1/6 chance of being eliminated, the second defender to post their card has 2/6 chance, and the third (you) has 3/6 chance.

In a 2-player round, if everyone goes defender, the first defender to post has 1/3 chance of being eliminated, the second has 2/3 chance.

Thanks for the feedback. There will be two brand new items in the next fight or die, and the ones from this contest won't be present. I'm not sure how it will be decided who gets the items though.

That clarification did help.  I certainly don't want to eliminate myself without at least a fight!

On the other hand both designs are pretty awesome and I might have a better chance going defender...

I'll attack Ulcaster, because I think Metal's card is almost perfect.

Sacrifice a land:  Choose one:  Tap target non-land permanent an opponent controls, that permanent does not untap during its controllers next untap step; or destroy target tapped permanent an opponent controls.

Ok, there we go.  I leave it to the fates.

So, this pulls inspiration from the Russian's Scorched Earth Policy.  Pretty much every effect this card provides costs 3 CMC, but putting it all in one package I felt forced a more stringent cost.  I thought 5 would be too much, but 4 too little, so I made it 4 CMC with heavy color requirements.  Obviously the tie in is Sacing lands.

Ulcaster - The most recent example of a card that lets you sacrifice all your lands to get a one-shot mana boost is Mana Seism, so I think this card should be red. Sorry but I don't understand the meaning of the flavor text. I do like how you chose to make this a creature so if someone's using it as part of a combo, they'll have to wait a turn and hope it doesn't die (unless they're willing to accept the -3 mana... I would have costed it 1 higher just to make the point) - not to mention that it can be used as a simple attacker if you don't have the combo piece in hand.

Attacker, POSValkir - Why "tap and it doesn't untap" instead of just "tap", since most of the time if I'm doing that I'll want to sacrifice another land the same turn to destroy their permanent? Also, if the opponent has got a lot of stuff tapped on the turn I bring this out, I only need to sacrifice one land for each thing I want to blow up. It seems like you forgot to add a clause like "activate this ability only once each turn and only on your turn", or something. Or if you do want people to be able to use it multiple times, the ability should just be "sacrifice two lands: destroy target nonland permanent". Which might be more balanced, but it still wouldn't be blue-black. Black can't destroy artifacts or enchantments, so it needs to pair with either green or white to destroy those card types.

Ulcaster survives to fight against Metalevolence in the final round!

Metalevolence - Great card, I feel like the abilities do justify using a colored artifact here, as you didn't just artifactize City of Brass, but also turned it into a relentless win con. I would increase the cost of the 2nd ability purely for balance reasons (compare with Stensia Bloodhall) or alternatively you could make this a creature - fixes balance problems, no need to make a colored artifact, has precedence in Vesper Ghoul, but unfortunately in practice would be unlikely to be used as a win con due to fragility.

Criteria for defenders in the final round - Create an instant or sorcery that seems like it would be one of a mage's most powerful spells. If you want a more narrow criteria, you may create a wedge colored ultimatum (see this Link, but whichever color has three mana symbols, the other two colors should be its common enemies on the color wheel (like bbbggww)). You don't get any more 'style points' for following either the generic or the narrow criteria, it's just for people who need restrictions to breed creativity.

It would be more epic to see the second person to post actually attack the first poster (with the normal rules for attacking), but if you want an anticlimax, you still have the option to defend (but see the Transparency post above...)
Nope, didn't forget a clause, just..ignored?..the fact you could activate it twice in a round.  I would have added that if I'd been thinking.

Also, and this pains me, you are right.  There is NO precedent for black being able to destroy just any ol permanent.  I generally hate those statements because there is always an exception.  Here there is not...but you could have helped make it.  You could have helped evolution Flopfoot...thats on you..Wink.

I had fun, I like this contest.  Thanks man.

No problem. I'll see you in #3.

If you want to make a color bleed or permanently change what a color can do, in a card creation contest, you should leave a clarifying note to the judge saying something like "I know black doesn't normally get to destroy any permanent, but I think it should be allowed to because..."

That's how red looting (like Mad Prophet) became a thing, contestants in the Great Designer Search 2 said hey this feels a lot more red than blue let's suggest it to the judges (who happened to work for WotC) and make some cards that are examples of how we think it'd work.

Hmm, I'll keep that in mind.  Not bad advice at all.  Good advice really.  To be honest, I didn't think about it at all until you pointed it out.  Just felt to me.  When you pointed it out I thought:  Couldnt be...black decays and blue freezes in time...those two things SHOULD be able to destroy right...

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind for future contests.
