Gruul Aggro

Here's my initial take on Gruul Aggro, which I built this afternoon. So far it seems like it comes out of the gate pretty hard, though I'd be glad to tweek it. I still need to get the Stomping Grounds up to 4x, but the card shop was sold out.

29 Creatures:
4x Experiment One
4x Wolfbitten Captive
4x Burning-Tree Emissary
4x Flinthoof Boar
4x Lightning Mauler
3x Pyreheart Wolf
3x Wolfir Avenger
3x Ghor-Clan Rampager

8 Other Spells:
4x Pillar of Flame
4x Rancor

23 Land
1x Stomping Ground
4x Rootbound Crag
1x Kessig Wolf Run
9x Forest
8x Mountain

No sideboard yet. I'll probably end up trying it with Hellrider and seeing how that runs. Other suggestions?

need more greensources, less red sources. Also, I like Cackler/Noble better than captive.

but where DID the other fork come from?

Lord_Zed: I was at my friends house when this happened. He's married and his wife was an excellent baker. She had baked a homemade apple pie the night before. I was hungry, and my friend convinced me to try those low carb monster drinks. Before this day, I had never triend energy drinks before. Boy was I in for a treat. When I tried that first monster, I really enjoyed the flavor, but the taste that it left in my mouth wasn't so good. What was my solution? Drink another! before I could finish drinking that 2nd monster, I felt it already kicking in(these drinks were not very far apart, we're talking minutes here) my friend decided that it was a good idea to whip out that fresh pie his wife made the night before. I didn't know what to do, since I felt incredibly invigorated, and at the same time, freaked out by the rush I was feeling, but I was also hungry, and my friend have me an entire plate with a fork and said "help yourself." He extended his saucer to me, and I cut him a piece of the pie and handed it to him, then I looked at the pie, noticed that the pie was in an aluminum holder, and dumped the entire pie onto my plate and started eating it with 2 forks. I don't know where I found that other fork, it probably came from my friend. Anyhow, his wife wasn't happy, and I was already in magical christmas land. 2 days later, I was in my friends bed and I slept for 14 hours. His wife outlawed my from having any of her baked goods for a while(which sucked because I could just show up at there house, steal some sweets, and leave) and said I couldn't have any energy drinks at her house, unless under close watch. My friend, on the other hand, had to take me out to a steak dinner, because apparently I won a bet where I climbed a tree and didn't die.

Good suggestion. I'll try +4 Stromkirk Noble, -4 Wolfbitten Captive

Cackler is better main, as it evolves Ex1. Noble is SB for humans, imo. Spear over Pillar.

This. I have Experiment One in my Gruul deck, and I like it when everything else in the deck has a way of growing it.

I'm also thinking about Dryad Militant

I would go dryad militant if you are going to play experiment one. It's better than cackler and easier on the mana. also there are really no good 3 drops except boros reckoner and he's expensive and at RRR hard to cast. You are almost better putting in some more 2 drops like strangleroot geist or gore-house chainwalker maybe.

I also agree with spear over pillar in the mainboard at least.

Wrong, as a 3 drop green has their most underlooked card IMO out there.

Wolfir Avenger

I love this guy, a suprise blocker, gets rid of derptusk, can block reckoner and regen if need be. He also has psuedo haste in a way due to his flash.
Decks I play: Modern: R/G Tron B/w Soul Sisters EDH: Gisela Midrange Edric Tap em down n' Swing Karrthus, the dragonlord Kaervek, the troll. Standard: The Aristocrats
There are 6 3-drops in the deck already: 3x Wolfir and 3x Pyreheart Wolf. Seems good. Reckoner is amazing (I run 4 in my Boros deck), but seems like a terrible idea in a deck that doesn't lean heavily towards red.

have you thought of putting Captive back in and using mayor of avarbruck to make this a human deck?

Reckoner is amazing (I run 4 in my Boros deck), but seems like a terrible idea in a deck that doesn't lean heavily towards red.

Speaking of which, what is your plan to counter a Boros Reckoner. I agree with the need for Searing Spear. In fact, there are enough creatures with toughness 4 floating around that even Mizzium Mortars might be called for, at least in the sideboard.

If this deck does lean more to humans, try out Hamlet Captain, a very nice 2 drop that carries his weight, Champion of Lambholt deserves a mention

The best answer I can come up with in R/G is to not let him block me. For that I'm playing Pyreheart Wolf with Firefist Striker. Here's the list I'm playing with now. I just played about a dozen games against the Tier-1 Naya Humans deck to test it and lost only 3 of them.

27 Creatures:
4x Experiment One
4x Dryad Militant
4x Burning-Tree Emissary
4x Flinthoof Boar
4x Firefist Striker
4x Pyreheart Wolf
2x Hellrider
1x Thundermaw Hellkite

10 Other Spells:
3x Pillar of Flame
3x Searing Spear
4x Rancor

23 Land
2x Stomping Ground
4x Rootbound Crag
1x Kessig Wolf Run
8x Forest
8x Mountain

I should probably lose Thundermaw for a 3rd Hellrider, and I still need more Stomping Grounds, but I'm having a blast with it even as it is.

EDIT: Following the experiences of playing this deck along with my Boros aggro deck, I decided that I wanted to combine the strongest aspects of both and play three of my favorite cards in standard together in the same deck: Boros ReckonerBurning-Tree Emissary, and Hellrider. Also I wanted to use Pyreheart Wolf and Firefist Striker to get damage through and avoid problem blockers. The rest of the deck came together around that. Turns out its Gruul RDW.
