How regularly do you guys have Dungeon Command tournaments?  I've been looking for a place to play, but when I look on Wizard's Store Locator the closest thing that comes up is in Chico; which is quite a ways away from Chino :P
On 2/15/13 during FNM some local DC players sat down and played a friendly game of 3-way DC.

Ok to kick things off I had everyone describe the theme of their deck. There were silly names like "Super Dex" and "Magic of Friendship" entered in my notes. Other people just listed Attributes like Constitution/Intelligence. I played a Bugbear Combo warband with Commander Drogan.

First Round I played against Super Dex led by Kalteros. My opponent's warband consisted of all fey with two Vampires and two orc archers.  I deployed a first turn bugbear and gravehound. As i manuevered around collecting treasue his archers started peppering the bear with arrows and a houseguard moved in to block any advances. His deployed forces used ranged attacks to take out the bear and gravehound. Focus fire from a drow wizard, elf archer, assassin, orc archer kept my cleric in my start zone. Sometime at turn 4-5 I deployed a lolth priestess and dropped blessing. I had been pinned down in my start zone by now and had conceded 4 out of six treasure to him. Through scheming, blessing and equipping a vial of poison I drew my combo hand and stealthed the bugbear. Meanwhile Super Dex was advancing two vampires on my start zone. Next turn I popped up adjacent to his ranged units and slaughtered them all. Removed poison, undaunted surge, killed a blademaster, then killed a weakened assassin, moved killed a archer, then a drow wizard, played nimble strike to reach and kill a orc archer, played spring attack to reach his vampires and killed them with quick jabs. His turtling my start zone gave me the time to draw the right cards and give me the match. The match's duration was 47 minutes.

The match next to me ended in 51 minutes with Con/Int thumping the Magic of friendship.

In my second match I faced the Professor and his Con/Int band led by Morgana. My opponent played Sorcerer's , war wizards, disciples and necromacners with skeletons and zombies as meat shields. He  put the pressure on early by magic circle deploying a war wizard and using unending horde to rush his skeletons into the tile adjacent to my start zone. I had deployed a bug bear and gravehound then played a Orc card (lose one morale gain two leadership) and while a grave hound moved near to two treasure piles. I deployed a cleric at the end of my first turn. At turn three my bug bear was hurt and I played spring attack even though I didn't have the cards I needed to perform the killing spree. I went in without a magic shortsword and was severly limited in my effectivness. I lost the bug bear and I only managed to kill a drow wizard and elf archer. He could have cowered for that damage and not lost his ranged units but he forgot about that option. Back in my start zone i deployed a bugbear and priestess. I kept my forces back while i schemed into a blessing. The professor moved a tomb guardian and zombie to flush my units out but a cleric and gravehound stopped them. I had enough cards to perform a second killing spree and equipped a vial of P. I used my second spring attack to posistion myself. He lost all of his ranged unit (necromancer, war wizard, kyuss) and his tomb guardian was weak enough my cleric and grave hounds finished him off. He deployed a troll and more skeletons and took two to three turns advancing on my group. meanwhile i held everyone back and readied a stealth. I emerged, kiled a skeleton and hurt his troll. The rest of my warband focused on his troll to win the game for me. The match lasted 61 minutes.  The players that played for third ended their game at 46 minutes.

My combo sequence of cards was performed in this order. Equip Vial of P, Next turn Stealth, Next Turn Unstealth, remove vial, Undaunted Surge, Short sword, either attack for 60 or shadow ambush for 90. Then play jabs at 30 dmg, nimble strikes for 40 dmg, or ambushes for 60 dmg. The deck was fun but not very interactive. I didn't feel like I had a good tactical experience. I play DC for the tactics and matching my skill against others. My forces hid in cover most of the time while I drew cards.

Thanks for the lists. I'm looking to run a local tournament, nothing official just friends and newcomers. Any advice about running the games? Things to avoid or things to make it all run smoother?
First of all, have you read the official DC tournament rules?

www.wizards.com/wpn/Document.aspx?x=2012...

Basic run-down:

  • Each deck (creature, order) must be sleeved entirely in the same sleeves, different sleeve for each deck.

  • No proxies allowed unless made by the head judge on the day, before the tournament begins. (Though cards that get damaged during the tournament (somehow) can be proxied by the head judge.) Player-made proxies are never valid.

  • Customised minis / orders / etc. are allowed as long as the customisation neither imparts knowledge that otherwise would not be known, does not obscure knowledge and does not make cards identifiable when they otherwise would not be. Also all models must be identifiable by look as clearly the creature they are representing.

  • Warband registration is a good idea: each player must provide a list of the creatures and orders they are using, with quantities. It helps reduce problems and can identify people that have invalid decks.

Of course since it is not an official Wizards tournament you don't have to use any of these rules, but it is good to have an idea.

Read the DC tournament rules as Argemon said, then throw it out and have fun. The biggest help was going over movement rules, (cutting corners, not cutting corners) and explaining how the stack worked. I picked out a few cards and creatures and explained their abilities how I understood them. Dwarf clerics tap abilities, Cloud of bats, Seize the Oppertunity and the dex based version, Fireball, Line of Sight and cowering.

Don't be afraid to house rule things quickly instead of stopping the game while you flip through rulebooks. I must have played over a dozen games where abosolutely no corner could be cut because we weren't clear on the ruling.

I suggest playing out of the box factions if your able to. They are balanced and work well as made.

Oh and I don't sleeve anything, I don't like using protection ;)

OK, I'll nibble on the bait.  What on earth is that tall, golden insectoid mini in the first photo?  I haven't seen that in any of my DC boxes?  Got a card for that? Wink
The insect automaton with a skeleton is a pathfinder mini subbing in for a dracolich. Freddy krueger and jason vorhees are also in the picture
