How does a mind flayer character aquire and keep thralls and how do you determine how many thralls he can have? Also how do you roll age, height and weight for one?

How does a mind flayer character aquire and keep thralls and how do you determine how many thralls he can have?

What edition are you talking about?

If it's 3.5 (the common one discussed here), you're probably using the XPH's version (which has actual psionics instead of spell-like abilities called psionics). That version manifests powers as a 9th level telepath, and that includes psionic dominate. All the limits are discussed in the powers. (The 3e version works more or less the same way.) While that answers your question, the book Lords of Madness goes into more detail on this.

If it's earlier than that, I'm curious how you're playing a mind flayer as a character at all.

RadicalTaoist: I've been throwing **** at this group that's 5 levels over CRed in DFN, and have yet to wipe the party.

it is 3.5, but I couldnt find anything about the mind flayer except for the MM and the Lords of Madness entry, both of which are incredibly vague. So A mindflayer's dominion over a thrall must be renewed and isn't a permanent effect? What about their height, weight, and age?

the standard "tralls" that they have are slaves with the template of MM 5 pag 110 or 112 or the template in monster manual 3 pag 187.

and the book of lords of mandless pag 71 say how many slaves have each mindflayer, more slaves = more status in the city.

other races like the Umber Hulk was totally slaved for the mind-flayers and dont need any template and this can be apply to any other slave.

Remember the mindflayers created the race of the Elans, Githyanki, Githzerai and others.

now about the age, weigh of a mind flayer, remember that a mind flayer is a parasite then are the same that the base creature (usually human or elf) but the age are up to 135 in average
Pepe pecas pica papas con un pico con un pico pepe pecas pica papas si pepe pecas pica papas con un pico donde esta el pico con que pepe pecas pica papas.

They're monsters, not PC races. The rules only need to be comprehensive to a point.

Also, use the psionic mind flayer in the XPH. The MM versions are downright clunky and bizarre by comparison. There's more on mind flayers in Lords of Madness and a few flayer-related monsters in other monster books, but none of them are intended for PC use.
So A mindflayer's dominion over a thrall must be renewed and isn't a permanent effect?

If you're just using Psionic Dominate instead of a specific template or similar, then yes. However, it lasts for ages and it's not hard for a mind flayer to crush a thrall's will or subvert it altogether after they've got a creature dominated.
What about their height, weight, and age?

Again, they're monsters, not PC races. You won't find it expressed in a nice table like most PC races are.

You will, however, find information along these lines in the walls of fluff text included in Lords of Madness.

Thanks Oma, I think the voidmind template will be perfect! That totally fits with everything I've read about the illithids and it makes the number of thralls much harder to abuse. And thanks for the tip on the Domination ability Tempest that was very helpful. Im glad my player will actually get to use the race since I understand the mechanics now. Any other tips or suggestions?

Again, since they are intended for monsters and not for PCs, the number of thralls is largely intended to be set by the DM as part of the difficulty of the encounter. If you let a player play a Mind Flayer you'll still be able to control that simply by limiting what they hit.

Assuming you've got the ECL mechanics down? Use the psionic mind flayer. That's my biggest advice.

Another possibility is that the psionic mind flayer basically qualifies for Thrallherd (switch out its Combat Manifestation feat for Inquisitor). This is the least abusable way I know of to have permanent thralls.

ECL mechanics are no problem and I agree with the psionic mind flayer and the thrallherd idea, thanks for the help!

Lords of Madness pg63, under Development and Aging, states that Mind Flayers life expectancy is 135 years and are considered grown up at age 20. Both of these numbers are in line with a half-elf, so use the half-elf's age chart for random determination.

Monster manual states that their height and weight are about the same as a human, so use thpse charts for that random determination.
Thanks Ahruhn that makes perfect sense.
If you really want a PC with mind flayer flavor, take some Illithid Heritage feats from Complete Psionic. Otherwise you're dealing with (iirc) a 9HD +8LA PC (17th-level ECL).

I do, however, have one last lesson on this subject. That last one? The only build in this post that can one-shot average opponents[by dealing twice as much damage as they have HP? I would argue that it is not optimized. Why isn't it optimized? Because it's overkill. Overkill is NOT optimizing. This means that there are portions of this build dedicated to damage which can safely be removed and thrown elsewhere. For example, you probably don't need both Leap Attack AND Headlong Rush at the same time. You could pick up Extra Rage feats for stamina, feats to support AoO effects, feats that work towards potential prestige classes, and so on. However, you could also shift our ability scores around somewhat. I mean, if you're getting results like that with 16 starting Strength, maybe you can lower it to 14, and free up four points to spend somewhere else - perhaps back into Charisma, giving you some oomph for Intimidating Rage or Imperious Command if you want. You can continue to tune this until it deals "enough" damage - and that "enough" does not need to be "100%". It could easily be, say, 80% (leaving the rest to the team), if your DM is the sort who would ban one-hit killers.

One thing I'd note with the mind flayers is that they really don't need to establish total control over all their slaves.  When you're a humanoid commoner (or similarly weak race) in the underground city of a bunch of powerful mind flayers, you're stuck anyway because the few exits are protected by a few powerful guards, and the mind flayers can easily quash any serious resistance if it ever happens.

Most of the creatures mind flayers keep can be trapped in the sense of being normal prisoners or slaves, with the flayers only bothering to apply their powers directly when they need something.  Whatever the mind flayers can't achieve with charm person and suggestion (for the non-psionic ones), they can achieve through mind-blasting, brain-eating, and general intimidation.

Zauber's Mutable Rod: This rod has a number of useful functions that make it easier to live in the wilderness. It is made of polished wood, with five studlike buttons on one end. Each button produces a different effect when pressed. Unless otherwise noted, the rod’s functions have no limit on the number of times they can be employed. When button 1 is pressed, one end of the rod produces a small flame, equivalent to a candle. When button 2 is pressed, the rod unfolds into a two-person tent, complete with bedrolls and warm blankets. When button 3 is pressed, the rod becomes a one-handed hammer, suitable for pounding pitons into a wall. When button 4 is pressed, the rod becomes a sturdy iron spade. When button 5 is pressed, the rod becomes a wooden bucket able to hold 2 gallons of liquid. Once per day, it can be commanded to fill with fresh water. If the rod is seriously damaged or broken in any of its alternate forms (button 2, 3, 4, or 5), it reverts to its basic rod form and cannot be activated for 24 hours. Moderate conjuration; CL 9th; Craft Rod, minor creation; Price 375 gp; Weight 2 lb.
