A question about mana cost activated abilities.

I'm a returning player that's been away from the game for a while, so I'm not 100% up on the rules anymore.  When a card has an activated ability with a mana cost that says, for example, " : Liliana's Shade gets +1/+1 until end of turn" can you pay more than 1 to get a +2/+2 or +3/+3 instead?

There are a great many problems that can be circumvented by players and DMs having a mature discussion about what the game is going to be like before they ever sit down together to play.

The answer really does lie in more options, not in confining and segregating certain options.

As long as the effect doesn't say "once per turn" you may activate it as many times as you want. So if you have three swamps, you could activate the effect three times giving it a +3/+3.
You can activate an ability as much as you can pay its cost. If you can produce , you can activate Liliana's Shade's ability four times.

This applies to all activated abilities, by the way - there's nothing special about ones that just cost mana. You can use them as often as you can pay their costs unless something explicitly says otherwise.

Of course, some costs, like and "Sacrifice this creature", are difficult to pay several times in rapid succession, but the fact remains that if you do have a means of doing so, you can. (On a similar note, you must pay the entire cost for each activation. If some ability costs ", ,", you can't activate it multiple times by paying more than once but only tapping it once - you must pay the entire cost for each activation, which in this case means you need a way of untapping the relevant permanent in addition to the extra mana.

You may have read references to "mana abilities" here and there, but these are not abilities that cost mana, they are (most) abilities that produce mana.

Thank you both.

You can activate an ability as much as you can pay its cost. If you can produce , you can activate Liliana's Shade's ability four times.

Follow up question: is that true for all activated abilities regardless of the kind of cost, such as Bloodthrone Vampire's "Sacrifice a creature: Bloodthrone Vampire gets +2/+2 until end of turn" ability?  Or abilities that cost life?

Edit:  TY jeff for the clarification.

as has been said, it is true for all activated abilities
you can activate them as often as you can pay the cost

if you can't, they'll say so, like Basking Rootwalla
