Cheating at FNM

Hey, recently there have been at least 2 people who at FNMs and Prereleases have been seen adding cards to their draft/sealed decks. 1 player had 3 of the same rares (Vraska, Pack Rat, and, Lotleth Troll) for probably 4-6 weeks in a row, and another week was seen (by multiple people) adding a bunch of uncommons and commons to his pool to include at least 4 axebane guardians and 4 hover barriers and 4 door keepers.

The second player I noticed 1 week when we had to draft ISD DKA AVR added the BUY A BOX PROMO version of Silverblade Palidin to his deck, and I was the only one who noticed but I didn't say anything because I didn't want to rock the boat. He was also caught adding Giddeon and Aurelia's Fury to his second prerelease deck that he opened the previous night, but another player and close friend of mine essentially called him out by proving he didn't have 2 Giddeons on him and therefore couldn't have opened the second one so he played it off like he did it by accident and then took it out, but was obviously flustered when he played me round 1.

I'm the rules guy at the shop as I'm a rules advisor and the store owner pretty much looks to me to help run the event. I told him about Player 1's cheating but he said he was apprehensive to do anything about it because he hadn't been getting enough wins to get prizes (despite cheating), he hadn't seen him cheating himself and also because the guy spends a ton of money at the shop between Magic and Comics and he didn't want to alienate him. Most everyone at the shop agrees that they don't want to see either player get booted but rather would just want them to stop cheating essentially.

The owner and I talked after the prerelease and I suggested we try to sterilize the deck building area and not allow outside materials anywhere near it, but the shop is kinda small and it'd be hard to regulate. What would be the best way to ensure no one could add cards to their pool? A lot of players don't like people watching them deckbuild (even some honest players) and we don't want to explicitly call anyone out on cheating if we can help it. What is the best way to do this?
the way this is handled on larger tournaments is to open all the packs beforehand, mark the cards in some unique way (some kind of signature), then reseal the cards and hand them to the players

not sure how big your event is or if the store has the equipment for that, but that is one way

This is the proper way. If there is a pool that has powerful cards you should do a "deck check" on both players (so one doesn't feel singled out) and make sure they are running at least 40 cards and all of the cards are in their pool.

Creatures 3-9, removal 1-3. wall of Frost 2.5: Solid pick in-color; creatures 5-12, removal 3-5. Dark Favor 2.0: Creatures 10-16; removal 6-7. Elvish Mystic 1.5: My 23rd or 22nd card, depending on removal. Act of Treason 1.0: 23rd card if I don't maindeck an additional land. Lay of the Land 0.5: This card will sometimes be sideboarded in. The problem is the majority of the time we do Draft, and I don't think people want their cards marked, what is the best way to do this then?
then just get a list of all the cards from all the boosters (that will make first pick take a bit longer)
then use decklists and compare that to the other lists

Well, this player shouldn't be cheating, end of story.  Normally, if a judge (or in the cast of their not being one, the tournament organizer) beleives that a player is cheating, they should disqualify that player from the event.  The player is (at least for the moment) still allowed to come back to future events.

 Then, the judge (or TO) should submit an investigation report through the judge center and let them take it from there.

I would caution your store owner, that once players start to notice that someone is cheating regularly in their events, other players will be turned off from the store.  Players will tolerate it for a short period of time, but once their patience runs out the other players will just stop coming.  One player (no matter how good a customer they are) isn't worth losing everyone else.

Also, where are you from?  Is there a judge in your area who you can have come in to the store to help with the events?  Have you considered becoming certified yourself?

DQ him everytime you catch him. Even if you don't ban him, you'll send a clear message : look, buddy, that won't do it. I doubt he'll quit the store, he'll just stop.

Yeah. Talk to the cashier. Tell him/her that you want a Black Lotus, and if they don't have one tell them that the store isn't on par with what you expected.

 

Reach into your back left pocket. Pull out a deck list that you copied directly from some ChannelFireball top 8 Standard discussion, and ask for all the cards, as is, on that list. Then, ask for some random, probably terrible cards from whatever set is Standard legal. Say it's tech for the upcoming changes in the metagame.

 

Pull out a deck, and tell some random dude you wanna test (you have to use the term "test" for this to work) for Standard. Make sure that deck contains Kitchen Finks and Alluring Siren. Maybe throw in Nyxathid for good measure.

 

Finally, before you leave, spill (make it look like an accident) one hundred singleton, random cards onto the floor. Pick them up, put them in a pile, and say "EEE-DEE-AYCH".

 

I know this sounds dumb at first, but it will work. With the method outlined above, you will draw the attention of players that play older formats by asking for cards that no one on Earth can reasonably afford. You will get the attention of the wanna-be pro, Stomp-n00bz players by pulling out a well known decklist and declare that you have "tech" to make it better. You will get the attention of all the kind, helpful players by seemingly not knowing the most common format by having non-Standard legal cards in a deck that you claim is Standard legal. Finally, you catch all the rest of the Magic players by saying "EEE-DEE-AYCH" (EDH (or Commander)).

And there you have it. You will be talking to more people than you would have wanted to talk to in no time.

Well, this player shouldn't be cheating, end of story.  Normally, if a judge (or in the cast of their not being one, the tournament organizer) beleives that a player is cheating, they should disqualify that player from the event.  The player is (at least for the moment) still allowed to come back to future events.

 Then, the judge (or TO) should submit an investigation report through the judge center and let them take it from there.

I would caution your store owner, that once players start to notice that someone is cheating regularly in their events, other players will be turned off from the store.  Players will tolerate it for a short period of time, but once their patience runs out the other players will just stop coming.  One player (no matter how good a customer they are) isn't worth losing everyone else.

Also, where are you from?  Is there a judge in your area who you can have come in to the store to help with the events?  Have you considered becoming certified yourself?



I have considered becoming certified before but there aren't any J2's remotely close to me and I don't have a car to get to a judge and I don't think there are any judges in my area that would come out to my shop (Jacksonville Beach FL). I told the owner (TO) that the correct punishment for cheating is a DQ but he was reluctant to do that saying that "he would decide what the penalty is since he's the running the event" or something along those lines. Additionally the 1st of the 2 people who have been cheating kinda has anger issues, like he wouldn't do anything directly to harm anyone, but he'd make a big fuss about it and probably not come back if someone accused him of cheating. We're trying to figure a way to stave people off of cheating in a draft without calling anyone out directly and without taking up too much time to do so since our FNM starts later.
If the shop owner/TO refuses to do anything about cheating, vote with your feet: walk out.

BatDwarf has a point- what's more expensive to the shop owner- losing one player (the cheater) or losing multiple players (the ones getting cheated.)

I'd advise talking to the offending player and reminding him that draft rules state you must work with the cards in your current pool, without bringing additional cards in. That will eliminate the possibility that he's not aware what he's doing is cheating. If he's caught doing it again, DQ him from the event. Any further offenses could warrant a ban from FNM events entirely.

Agreed entirely. This is unreasonable and unethical. People go there to have fun and enjoy tournaments. If the store owner doesn't have enough guts to provide a fair environnement and prefers to let people cheat, tell him he's lose way more than a player, because that's unnaceptable.

Reach into your back left pocket. Pull out a deck list that you copied directly from some ChannelFireball top 8 Standard discussion, and ask for all the cards, as is, on that list. Pull out a deck, and tell some random dude you wanna test (you have to use the term "test" for this to work) for Standard. Make sure that deck contains Kitchen Finks and Alluring Siren. Maybe throw in Nyxathid for good measure.

 

Finally, before you leave, spill (make it look like an accident) one hundred singleton, random cards onto the floor. Pick them up, put them in a pile, and say "EEE-DEE-AYCH".

 

I know this sounds dumb at first, but it will work. With the method outlined above, you will draw the attention of players that play older formats by asking for cards that no one on Earth can reasonably afford. You will get the attention of the wanna-be pro, Stomp-n00bz players by pulling out a well known decklist and declare that you have "tech" to make it better. You will get the attention of all the kind, helpful players by seemingly not knowing the most common format by having non-Standard legal cards in a deck that you claim is Standard legal. Finally, you catch all the rest of the Magic players by saying "EEE-DEE-AYCH" (EDH (or Commander)).

And there you have it. You will be talking to more people than you would have wanted to talk to in no time.

I have thought about rare-redrafting but I don't think the collective of the store really truely likes the idea of that. Additionally there isn't a true judge at our store, I'm the closest thing to it being a rules advisor, the TO actually is fairly ignorant of most of the rules and procedures as he's mostly a comic guy.
Disqualifying the player is not just a recommendation--it's required. If a player is caught cheating, they must be disqualified--it's not optional. FNMs and other Regular-level events are run under the Judging At Regular document, which has the following to say about cheating:
- Serious Problems -

There are also certain behaviours that will not be tolerated in any event. Any player engaging in the following must be disqualified from your event;
● Aggressive, violent or abusive behaviour (physical or verbal)
Cheating, lying or intentionally making illegal game actions or trying to avoid penalties
● Influencing Match outcomes (by incentives, coercion or random methods)
● Theft (this includes things like replacing a chase rare in a draft with one from their binder)
If you do have to hand out a Disqualification, let the players know that while your decision is final, the DCI would still like to hear their side of the story. Contact your WPN representative directly, and they will advise you further.

If your store owner is letting these two people get away with cheating, then there are two possible results for him: First, people start cheating themselves because they see that the store owner doesn't do anything to stop it. Second, people decide to stop coming to his store and his events because he's letting people cheat and they don't want to be cheated. Eventually, cheaters will be his only customers. Oh, and there's a third. Three: he gets in trouble with the WPN because he's letting players cheat.

Any customer that refuses to patronize your store because you won't let them cheat is not worth having as a customer.

Because frankly, being here depresses me these days.

I understand that,I even said we need to DQ people but I don't think he fully understands all that since he's not super in touch with the stuff like that. He wants to stop them but he hasn't seen anything with 100% certainty to know they're cheating just our second hand accounts.

EDIT to be clear I completely agree that we need to DQ people for cheating but since the TO is apprehensive and additionally I'd like not to lose my place to play because of him getting in trouble or me walking out because he won't stop it. What can we do to just head people off from cheating from now on?

Realistically? Nothing. You can make announcements and try to keep playing materials separate from stuff you bring in, but no matter what you do, someone who really wants to cheat (or feels they need to) is going to find a way to do it. They will perceive any and all measures you implement as challenges to their ingenuity, and will be even more determined to overcome them. And in the meantime you will be inconveniencing and frustrating all of your other players.

Any cheater who is discouraged by these methods would have been more effectively discouraged by confronting them directly.

the way this is handled on larger tournaments is to open all the packs beforehand, mark the cards in some unique way (some kind of signature), then reseal the cards and hand them to the players

not sure how big your event is or if the store has the equipment for that, but that is one way



You could have all the players open the packs in front of a TO or judge (who isn't participating in the tournament itself).

A long time ago we had this problam when we had FNM at our local store, the owner dident/couldent affored it during the start of the ression so he chose to rent another place for his fnm and Put a nice Neon Sign saying "Any indavidual or group found to be cheating in any event on this premissis will be barred from returning for any other events" and gave it to that store owner.

Mind you it was an arcade he rented space from.

You're letting some cheater play? The store owner is not only letting a cheater slip by, he's allowing EVERYONE else to be cheated. You wouldnt want someone like me to be part of that everyone else. The cheater would be publicly called out on it and the shop owner would also be called out for knowingly allowing a cheater to continue playing because he's a good spender, I'd ask for a refund for EVERY single tournament I participated in and he was part of it and since the shop owner would refuse that, I'd call WoTC.... even if he did I'd probably still would submit a well-written complain to WoTC.

You got a C4 bomb in your hands, better that you take out the blasting caps out of the C4 block and let it blow on the side than let the whole thing blow up. To be honest, if the shop is small enough and the cheater is caught, he might lose a loyal part of his customer base out of disgust for his bad decisions.

That's thing about cheating. If you let charming people slide they just consider it not a thing and keep it up. It'll be painful for them but better for them in the long run. It's like calling pretty people on their **** that way.

There are steps that a host of FNM can take to greatly reduce the ability to cheat in a draft tournament. Essentially, most of the cheating that occurs during the draft happens after the actual draft is done. The problem with this is that one or two people can't have their eyes on five or six games all going on at the same time. However, there is a solution.



  • When the draft starts, have everyone open their pack of cards and place the pile face-down in front of them. This will ensure that no cards can be added to the open pack they are currently drafting from.




  • Next, have the two people who are judging the game (Store Owner, and Helper, Etc.) stand behind two players. Pick up their pile and look through the 15 cards that are in the booster pack. Have a print out of the possible cards on a clipboard in alphabetical order, and tally the number of times a card is seen. Have one judge work clockwise, while the other works counter-clockwise. Repeat until finished with the pack. This will furthur ensure that no cards can be added to the pools that people have drafted.




  • Have the drafters begin. Have them write down each card that they draft. Patience is key. Allow for 15 seconds to draft a card, and then announce "pass!". This allows you to not allow people to get double, and triple stacked like I did in my first draft. People would just pass me piles, when I was trying to think, and some people ended up with less cards than they were suppose to. (Me being one of them.) Be sure they write in PEN ONLY. Have them carry their deck list around with them so that the other player can inquire upon it if they have concerns about their fellow planeswalker cheating. You can check the list for the players, and either DQ, or let the game continue based upon the results. (Obviously if they DIDN'T draft the card, it's a DQ.)




  • Repeat the process until all the cards are drafted.


Some of the other things I read on this topic so far were great ideas as well. Have players play in an area you can keep an eye on them, and make sure they don't have any possible lust to cheat. Remember, the idea of "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" goes a lot farther than you might believe.
