Undefined Cavern of Souls

Cavern of Souls

706.7a If an ability causes a player to "choose a [value]" or "name a card," and a second, linked ability refers to that choice, the second ability is the only ability that can refer to that choice. An object doesn't "remember" that choice and use it for other abilities it may copy later. If an object copies an ability that refers to a choice, but either (a) doesn't copy that ability's linked ability or (b) does copy the linked ability but no choice is made for it, then the choice is considered to be "undefined." If an ability refers to an undefined choice, that part of the ability won't do anything.

I have in play Renegade Doppelganger and Living plane, then play Cavern and have Dopliganger become a copy of it.

Can I tap the Dopleganger/Cavern for any color mana and use it without restriction?
if you haven't chosen a creature type only the first ability works
so you can create , but not any other mana

You can play the second ability just fine, but the mana produced is unusable. You can activate the second ability, but that mana can only be used to cast a creature spell of the chosen type. Since there was no chosen type, you can't use the mana for anything.

*Renegade Doppelganger

I believe the ability can be activated and generate mana of any color, but this mana can't be spent on anything and stay on the mana pool until the step/phase ends.
The difference is relevant to Doubling Cube, for example.

EDIT: What Nate said.

And now, some nitpicking:

if you haven't chosen a creature type only the first ability works

*only the second ability...

You can play the second ability just fine,

*can play the third ability...

Cavern of Souls has three abilities. The first one has a replacement effect; the second produces colorles mana; the third produces mana of any color but with a restriction. The first one is linked to the third.

The arguement is that the "part of the ability" that "wont do anything." Is "Spend this mana only to cast a creature spell of the chosen type, and that spell can't be countered."

Nothing about the first part of Cavern's 2nd tap ability refers to the choice, so it should still work?

This is going with the theory that the ability is devided into parts by the period.

No, it does not work. The second activated ability is linked to the first ability.

607.2d If an object has an ability printed on it that causes a player to "choose a [value]" or "name a card" and an ability printed on it that refers to "the chosen [value]," "the last chosen [value]," or "the named card," those abilities are linked. The second ability refers only to a choice made as a result of the first ability.

The second activated ability is all one ability. You don't break it into seperate abilities. The second sentence modifies what the first sentence does. There was no choice made for the first ability, so you can activate the second activated ability, but that mana can't be used for anything.

It might be useful to think of it like so:

: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool. Spend this mana only to cast an undefined creature spell, and that spell can't be countered.

Clearly, it's an issue to cast undefined spells.
can you use it to cast creatures with no creature type?

I think it's the whole "a creature of the chosen type" that would be blanked. So we get "Spend this mana only to cast {}"

Again, though, this points to issues with deciding how wide the "That part of the ability" should extend.
It'd be more accurate to say:

: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool. Spend this mana only to cast a creature spell that's an undefined, and that spell can't be countered.

Does Nameless Race have that type? Of course not, because it has no type at all.
