Blood Mage (Warcraft) 3.5 Build

I've wanted to create a character for a campaign that would have feel for the Blood Mage from the Warcraft franchise (i.e. Kael'thas Sunstrider). I am having trouble trying to figure out how to go about this.

Possible Classes: Wizard or Warmage
Race: Elf (Subspecies: ??)

Any suggestions to point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
can you give a description of the abioities of a blood mage? my last kaelthas raid was some years.ago
Do a warlock and take the blood mage prestige class. I haven't played much WOW but I think that would be pretty close.

"In a way, you are worse than Krusk"

"Can't say enough how much I agree with Krusk"

"Your advice is the worst"

Not even close: abilities of a blood mage were as follows:

Summon Phoenix
Mana Tap
Flamestrike
(Can't remember the last one)

In Warcraft 3, the last one was "banish". It's also not helpful to just list names to people who are unfamiliar with what they did.

The WC3 versions of those abilities were:
-Summon Phoenix: Basically gave you a powerful pet. The defining characteristic of that phoenix was that when it died it left an egg behind; if the egg wasn't destroyed the phoenix would resurrect.
-Mana Drain (it wasn't called Mana Tap): Exactly what it says on the tin, this let the blood mage steal mana from another unit.
-Banish: Removed a target from battle for a while. (There's a lot that do this in D&D.)
-Flamestrike: A pretty large area-of-effect blasting power; it was subtly different from other similar effects in that it took a short time after casting to go off and dealt damage in a few quick bursts instead of all at once or over time. It could also destroy obstacles like trees, unlike quite a few spells in that game.

(What does this have to do with blood? Nothing mechanically. The name "blood mage" came from "blood elf" which is what the former high elves called themselves once they were cut off from their usual source of magic. It gets a bit convoluted after that.)

Trying to transfer this over to D&D will not be a 1-to-1 mapping. Conceptually, the blood mage is a pretty typical blaster with a small touch of summoning and battlefield control. The summon is actually closer to a Planar Binding effect than a Summon Monster effect (since the phoenix is a persistent ally). Mana Drain will not transfer over; there's next to nothing that works that way in D&D (psionic power points do, and there are a few effects that work like Mana Drain there, but they won't help this kind of build). Thematically, though, Mana Drain allowed a blood mage to throw out spell after spell after spell, more frequently than you'd expect without potions. (Although his spells were more expensive than you'd think...). Banish and Flamstrike are straightforward to transfer over - there's a lot of effects that flat-out remove a target from battle (Time Hop is my favorite) and there's a lot of large AoE damage spells out there (although damage, in general, tends to suck in D&D).

A standard sorcerer can easily do all of this. Look through the draconic options available only to sorcerers and you'll find a few things to directly match on to the ridiculous stamina provided by Mana Drain as well. A warmage might feel closer to the blaster approach, but will lack the summoning and banishing abilities, and if something lacks half of what the target provides...

Cancer prognosis: I am now cancer-free.

Seishi: I think it might be fun to have a one-off [game] tuned fairly, but with the intention of wiping the party.

DisposableHero_: if [my campaign] has taught me nothing else, it is that with this group, nothing tuned fairly will ever wipe the party

RadicalTaoist: I've been throwing **** at this group that's 5 levels over CRed in DFN, and have yet to wipe the party.

Sounds like a Spellthief/Sorcerer multi-class with a flare for fire-based spells?

Spellthief is from Complete Adventurer. He gets sneak attack dice like a rogue (yet at a slower rate) and, when making a sneak attack on a magicuser can forego damage dice in order to steal magic energy from him instead. That's sort of like the mana tap ability?

There will be no summoning Phoenixes unfortunately as the only incarnation of that legendary bird that I know of in 3.x is in Monster Manual 2 and is a CR24 beasty.

Be advised that spellthieves will suck at the blasting idea. They're more roguelike than the definitively mage-like blood magus.

If you want, though, spellthieves do have access to the Master Spellthief feat in Complete Scoundrel, which does... interesting things to your caster level. You'll find a few spellcasting builds that have Spellthief 1 in it just for that feat. Most will make use of Complete Mage's Ultimate Magus prestige class, which might also work well here (it will let you hybridize Wizard with Warmage, giving you spell stamina, blasting spells, banishment spells, and summoning, as well as giving you a full Steal Spell progression). To make the most out of this, read this, particularly the part on Practiced Spellcaster. Splash in Spellthief 1 and Master Spellthief and you might get some interesting results.

There's the Phoelarch in the MM3, which is a monstrous humanoid that turns into a phoera (a CR3, 3HD magical beast that is, for all intents and purposes, a phoenix) when it dies. It even auto-resurrects in almost exactly the same way as the blood mage's phoenix (albiet much slower). It would probably be an appropriate choice for an Improved Familiar, perhaps around caster level 5 (it's somewhat similar to the Hell Hound).
