So who is your favorite character in the history of Magic and why?

My personal favorite is everyone's favorite hero upon The Weatherlight Gerrard Capashen I just love how his sacrifice by being absorbed by Karn in order to stop Yawgmoth, SUPER DOCTOR EXTRADAINAIRE.
Right now, Jedit Ojanen. Tends to change a bit with whom I've read most recently, though. Toss me Time Streams and Jhoira's back on top

The Goblin on Goblin Outlander. And Kallist.

After the official forums lost most of their functionality, a once vibrant community of Vorthos was wiped out.The survivors founded a new place to discuss all things concerning with the art, flavor and storylines of Magic: The Gathering. Come join us.

The Goblin on Goblin Outlander. And Kallist.

I like the flavor text on that goblin.

Teferi.  From his humble beginnings as a disruptive student, through his ascension to planeswalker and his experiments with time magic.  Also he had some of the very best lines.  He is and was everything I always imagined a blue mage to be.  Ertai came pretty close, but then he got all Phyrexianized and unfun.

@mikemearls The office is basically empty this week, which opens up all sorts of possibilities for low shenanigans

@mikemearls In essence, all those arguments I lost are being unlost. Won, if you will. We're doing it MY way, baby.

@biotech66 aren't you the boss anyway? isn't "DO IT OR I FIRE YOU!" still an option?

@mikemearls I think Perkins would throat punch me if I ever tried that. And I'd give him a glowing quarterly review for it.

Xantcha. An entity created in the vats of Phyrexia to be an eternal blank, she, in virtually every respect including gender, created her own identity, and went on to be one of Phyrexia's greatest foes.

<3 Xantcha.

I like what she said to Gix about if all he offers is fear she is not afraid, I believe it's on the card Oppression.

I have to second Xantcha.  and the card Haliz references is UnnerveOppression shows Gix with the upper hand.

Hidetsugu: Figures out how to get around the Oath and doesn't go into SMASH AND KILL rage when he finally gets Choryu; he takes his time avenging Kobo. His takeover of Minamo and sacking of the Oboro had me grinning and nodding as I read it.
Captain Crucius.
From his ignoble start as pirate to his transformation to doting parent and ultimately the absolutely crushing tragedy of outliving his daughter, every part of his character arc is touchingly written... and then he became Bo Levar, interplanar smuggler and cigar afficianado who tells Urza off regularly and doesn't afraid of anything.
Gave his life protecting Etlan Shiis, the art and philosophy commune of merfolk in the Voda sea.

For the record, it's a very close thing. Because by god I love Jhoira so much. And hey, she tells Urza off regularly and doesn't afraid of anything either.

Niv comes in somewhere on the top list too.
Gisa and Geralf.
Because they're funny.

But how can you relate to him? He's so heartless!

...

I like Nicol Bolas, but I have this wierd thing about intelligent dragons in general, which makes Niv a close second. The only reason Nicol Bolas beats Niv out of the top slot is because of my fondess for Black, really.
Gisa and Geralf.

Yeah, of the modern era Gisa and Geralf and definitely up there...

I'm a really bad person when it comes to being deep with favorites, I go for the most shallowest of qualities.  So, Serra and almost every angel caster / angel character in Magic who ain't a crazy betch in the head and stuff.
Args Cos was pretty sweet, as was whatever her name was, that goblin from the Ravnica novels.
Probably going with Jhoira though.

Can I get a list of those?  Because...thinking back, other than like, Feather, they were all pretty messed up in the head.  I mean, when you cross Akroma, Radiant, Razia, Reya, and Selenia off of the list as a bunch of crazies, who's left?  Avacyn may as well be a robot and Aurelia is a psychopath.

Always my favorite. It says a lot about both her and Urza if the good one's the Phyrexian. ;) Plus, keeping the hat off.

Of course, the ironic twist being that she was ultimately the last carrier of the infection, as Karn's heart.

It's obvious from Mirodin 1.0 that the oil was tracked into Argentium on Jeska's heel.

Though perhaps I should consider it saying something positive for Xantcha herself that she had that inside her and remained Xantcha, a good independant person, something that Karn could not, in the end, do on his own.

Or perhaps Karn's heartstone got its oil upgraded to Invasion Weapon from Benign Lifeblood sometime during the Invasion block.  Karn was exposed to all sorts of crud during that era, some of which might have latched on to the Phyrexian bit inside of him, and been forced into relative dormancy due to his shortly becoming an oldwalker.

Nope. What Szat said. There's too many other conflicting accounts of what happened, and too many of them make more sense than the heartstone explanation. Also, you can't give someone a planeswalker spark by transferring a flesh heart into their crystalline stone personality matrix. And Yawgmoth is dead.

Some things just don't make sense given all established information or even the basic laws of good writing. Those things now never happened.

@Azure:

Huh. I didn't know she even had a character appearance in anything. Or if I did it's been so long that I forgot.

Don't click on that.

From what I remember, it was sort of like this:

Radiant:  "Serra's gone!  I'm in control!  This place is crumbling around me!  Why, why, why!?  Leave me to my tower of mirrors and darkness Urza!  Nobody leaves this plane unless I say so!  I'm in control dammit!  Me!"

Reya:  "We're getting off this plane and helping Urza kill ****.  Dark ****.  I don't have time for people who feel like dying is a good excuse to stop killing dark ****.  Get your corpse off the ground and go back to fighting until I tell you to stop.  By the way, I'm never going to tell you to stop."

Ugh, if it's in Bloodlines I'll feel like an idiot... that's the last one of Artifacts that I haven't finished.

@Thoctar:

I feel the same about Elspeth. I don't know what attracts me to characters like that... something about watching a character being just steadily and systemically crushed is just fascinating to me for some reason.

Agreed.  Teferi can cast circles around Jace.  And honestly, I think he might have looked decent in Jace's hoodie/cape since, to be an icon, you need some icon clothing.

I'm sorry, but I believe that title's already taken by Karn.

Created from a dead hero for an experiment that ultimately fails, he is then left with no real purpose other then to try and help others. His mind gets messed with so he will ultimately forget all his friends and any relationships that are formed,. He accidently kills someone so after promisin never to hurt anyone again, he is constantly put into situations where is inaction causes problems for those he cares about. Then he gets forced into a war and survives the ultimate sacrifice so he is left with infinite power and no friends (all of them having died or run off in said war). He creates a world that is taken over firstly by the person he set to defend it, and then by his oldest enemy. He gives up his spark to heal a time rift, but that then leaves him open to corruption from his first enemy and he is forced to see another friend die to save him.

Give Elspeth another couple of centries on her current path nd MAYBE she'll reach Karn's level of Woobie.

More on the topic at hand, 2 favourite characters by far are Karn (if you hadn't already guessed) and Jodah from the Ice Age books. So calm, so collected, so much fun! I would alos like to give a sout-out to Arkol the scholar who gives the chapter introductions in the Ice Age trilogy. Never has one persons frustrations given me so much entertainment.

Teferi needs no second-hand cloak from a second rate mage as he's had an iconic Hood and Staff (see Teferi's Moat) since before Jace's great great grandparents were born.

I love the Kamigawa vignettes.

Eight-and-a-Half-Tails' story gave me a serious case of the feels. It has a genuine character arc where it shows us what the character wants (nine tails), shows how he struggles to achieve it, makes us aware of a huge mistake that he'll never stop feeling guilty for, and when he finally gets his prize, he realizes that it was never worth that struggle.

I also like Kataki, War's Wage for being completely batshit crazy.

Xantcha. An entity created in the vats of Phyrexia to be an eternal blank, she, in virtually every respect including gender, created her own identity, and went on to be one of Phyrexia's greatest foes.

Xantcha's great, and is the closest I've seen to a Black and Red hero. Planeswalker had a lot of problems with writing and pacing, but the characterization for the three main protagonists was top-notch.

Radiant's stuff was in Bloodlines.

Nope, she died in Time Streams.

His staff was pretty boss, but his Zhalfirin fashion sense needs some work.  A good hooded cloak would give him more of a hard Mace Windu look.

"My name is Skellum, and I wear a silly hat". I love the character, and have never felt more sad about ones death in any story.

I also really like Croag, I feel he is the perfect representation of a Phyrexian character. That mechanical mindset is beautiful to me.

In the process, the clearing we call knowledge expands, but the more it expands, the longer its perimeter and the more ignorance comes into view." -Matt Ridley, Genome

I was thinking about it and I also am a huge fan of Goblin Secret Agent and his license to be killed.
I also like Elspeth, Woobie Incarnate.

Don't forget inadvertently causing most of the conflict on Otaria by trying to harmlessly observe Dominaria.

Though he takes it all pretty well all things considered, so I'd say he's more of an... Iron Woobie

Personally it's been a while, but I recall being a big fan of Geth's Head and Sash and Waistcoat.

Though really I don't think I have favorite characters so much as favorite moments. Like the end of Ravnica when Fonne is trying to be all heroic and refusing to hand over the plot trinket, then Savra's like "That's nice" and rips her hand off. Or the pudding orgy in Scourge. Or when Karn is all like "I made you a pacifism, but I murdered it." in Invasion. Or when Glissa telefragged Yert in Mirrodin. Good times.

Zammm = Batman.

Hi guys! So, I'm a sort of returning player to Magic. I say sort of because as a child I had two main TCG's I liked. Yu-Gi-Oh, and Pokemon. Some of my friends branched off in to Magic, and I bought two pre-made decks just to kind of fit in. Like I said, Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon were what I really knew how to play. I have a extensive knowledge of deck building in those two TCG's. However, as far as Magic is concerned, I only ever used those two pre made decks. I know how the game is played, and I know general things, but now I want to get in the game for real. I want to begin playing it as a regular. My question is, are all cards ever released from the time of the inception of this game until present day fair game in a deck? Or are there special rules? Are some cards forbidden or restricted? Thanks guys, and I will gladly accept ANY help lol.
I have the same problem with women.

Oh I have a standing rule. If someone plays a Planeswalker I concede the game. I refuse to play with or against people who play Planeswalkers. They really did ruin the game.

And that's why you should never, ever call RP Jesus on being a troll, because then everyone else playing along gets outed, too, and the thread goes back to being boring.

See, this is why RPJesus should be in charge of the storyline. The novel line would never have been cancelled if he had been running the show. Specifically the Slobad and Geth's Head talkshow he just described.

Not only was that an obligatory joke, it was an on-topic post that still managed to be off-topic due to thread derailment. RP Jesus does it again folks.

It was wonderful. Us Johnnies had a field day. That Timmy with the Grizzly bears would actually have to think about swinging into your Mogg Fanatic, giving you time to set up your silly combo. Nowadays it's all DERPSWING! with thier blue jeans and their MP3 players and their EM EM OH AR PEE JEES and their "Dewmocracy" and their children's card games and their Jersey Shores and their Tattooed Tenaged Vampire Hunters from Beverly Hills
Seriously, that was amazing. I laughed my *ss off. Made my day, and I just woke up.

Perhaps, but who doesn't like to blaspheme every now and again? Especially when Mr. RPJesus is completely right.

So that even the decks that don't run it run it to deal with it? Isn't that like the definition of format warping?

The most common answer is that they are what RPJesus would call "[Debutantes avert your eyes]ing."

...Am I the only one that thinks this is reaching the point of downright Kafkaesque insanity?
I condone the use of the word Kafkaesque. However, I'm presentely ambivalent. I mean, that can't be serious, right? We're April 1st, right? They didn't mod RPJesus for off-topic discussion when the WHOLE THREAD IS OFF-TOPIC, right? Right.

HOW DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT THE BEAR PRODUCING WORDS OF WILDING?! WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?!
That's what RPJesus tends to do. That's why I don't think he's a real person, but some Magic Card Archive Server sort of machine, that is programmed to react to other posters' comments with obscure cards that do in fact exist, but somehow missed by even the most experienced Magic players. And then come up with strange combos with said cards. All of that is impossible for a normal human to do given the amount of time he does it and how often he does it. He/It got me with Light of Sanction, which prompted me to go to RQ&A to try and find if it was even possible to do combat damage to a creature I control (in light that Mark of Asylum exists).

Blue players get all the overpowerered cards like JTMS. I think it's time that wizards gave something to people who remember what magic is really about: creatures.
Initially yes, Wizards was married to blue. However, about a decade ago they had a nasty divorce, and a few years after that they began courting the attention of Green. Then in Worldwake they had a nasty affair with their ex, but as of Innistrad, things seem to have gotten back on track, and Wizards has even proposed.
You are my favorite. Yes you. And moments like this make it so. Thank you RPJesus for just being you.
