I'm new to 4e and only have the basic books. What do you think the best supplementary books are?
Check out this cool game! Just started a new campaign, looking for advice!

seriously, while the compendium and character builder aren't without flaws, they're fantastic tools for learning 4e.

Yeah, the DDI sub can't be beat for volume of content.  If you for whatever reason need to get a physical book, though, go for either one of the additional PHBs for more races and classes, or one of the Power books to expand on a class you already have.
Seriously, though, you should check out the PbP Haven. You might also like Real Adventures, IF you're cool.

For actual books PHB2 would be my first choice.  Its the best in quality overall in the player books that came out after PHB and has good new classes, feats, and races.

If not I would pick one of the Power books for some of the classes you like.  Except for martial power, the power books work better if you have PHB2 already and for psionic power you would need PHB3 first.

If no one else you play with has adventurers vault, then that is another one to consider.

After that you can look at some of the settings books, but that would last on my list unless you really wanted a race, class, or build found in those books.
If you're a DM, I suggest Monster Vault: Threats to the Nentir Vale.
