9/6: A Deckbuilding Exercise

I like singletons and doubletons. But often in the minutia of deckbuilding it's easy to forget what cards are important. A trick I've been working with while building concept standard decks recently is to start with an exercise of writing 9 spells and 6 lands on a piece of paper that interact favorably together. Then I create these decks in the mythical bird program and test them as 4-of-everthing before reducing 4s to 3s and adding singletons and doubletons in varying configurations to create multiple iterations of the deck before making the paper deck.

Thoughts? Tips? Anybody want to give this method a shot? Is there any established Magic theory regarding this, if so can I get some linkage?

xD I was confused about which forum to put this in, but I suppose since the decks involved are mostly experimental it would qualify for the casual deckbuilding section.

The author talks about the "rule of 9" which is basically choosing 9 cards to build your deck along with 24 lands. This is a technique that is great especially for new deckbuilders but one that I think it's easy to deviate from as you gain experience. As you noted you usually adjust the deck after you've got the 60 cards because rarely do you want 4 each of all 9 cards.

Aye, it's a helpful "get back to basics" exercise  that I've been using lately to better hone my capability to manipulate the numbers in my decks. Thanks for the linkage.

Absolutely love your use of "mythical bird program" ;]]

I really like the method in determining how many of a card to include based on how frequently you want to see the card.

I myself use that in tandem with the card's other factors, like CMC and purpose, and the deck's velocity.
