Clone Wars (with bounded accuracy)

Preparing for a Clone Wars game with a friend, and thought about introducing some bounded accuracy house rules so that mid-level player characters can square off against some of the high level baddies, and actually have it be exciting. So here are the rule changes:

1) Base attack bonus maxes out at +101
2) Heroic level bonus to Defenses maxes out at +10
3) Heroic level bonus to damage maxes out at +5
4) Level bonus to skills maxes out at +5

1 Anything that requires a higher BAB has its requirement changed to BAB +10, plus a level requirement equal to the original BAB requirement. For example, Dual Weapon Mastery III would require BAB +10 and 11th level or higher.

To demonstrate the rules changes, I've prepared a bounded accuracy version of Grievous (with more characters to follow, I hope).

Canon Characters:
General Grievous

Homebrew Characters:
Chu Naru, Jedi Knight
Elanne Karia, Jedi Padawan

Here we have a master and apprentice Jedi duo. Chu Naru is a cool-under-fire Obi-Wan type who taught youngling clans at the Jedi Temple, until one student in particular caught his eye - the Hit-Girl of the youngling lightsaber tournaments. Master Naru decided he would take her as his apprentice and teach her the value of patience. He isn't quite ready to declare complete success in this endeavor. ;)

Like nothing I've seen before, however it is a great idea for how to make a game survivable for the lower level pcs meeting the big baddies

It's an interesting idea. It sounds like you are reducing the CL of higher level opponents without actually removing their levels. The advantage of this method is perhaps less paperwork since you don't have worry about removing feats, talents, powers, hp, etc. The disadvantage is that I have no idea what CL this would acutually make Grievous.

Just out of curiosity, do you have a very small number of players, such as only 2?

Also, do your house rules affect players and limit them as well?

I don't know how to go about calculating the actual CL under these house rules. I favor story-based leveling anyway, so XP calculation is something I wouldn't worry about. And I don't care that much about "encounter building" either.

Anyway, it is a small group. And the house rules apply across the board to PC and NPC alike.

Did a test run after dinner last night, not of the house rules, just the beginning scene of the first adventure, a skill challenge of getting Republic troop ships past a Sep blockade. Talk about battle plans not surviving contact with the enemy! The very first roll of our shiny new d20 was a nat 1, and that sort of set the tone.

As time goes by I'd like to use characters from the fandom comics sourcebooks, and maybe they won't sue me if I post some bounded accuracy versions of their write-ups.

Ok, I don’t care about XP calculation, but I do use CL as a guide to how much a party can handle. It’s not an exact science by any means, but it is a rough guide.

Anyway, it is a small group. And the house rules apply across the board to PC and NPC alike.

If they apply to PC’s also, doesn’t that go against your goal of wanting mid-level PC’s to go up against big-shot NPC’s?

I’d be surprised if they minded at all.

No, the house rules just mean that your chances to hit or be hit are the same at mid level and high level. (The high level character will still have an edge thanks to more hp, feats, talents, etc.)

So if I understand your house rule correctly, anyone that is level 10 and under will be unaffected by the changes, correct?

Right. It's really a fix designed specifically for mid level characters, not all levels 1-20. Besides which, I still like keeping some "cannon fodder" levels in Star Wars, for battle doids and the like. I think level in this game says more about plot importance than experience.

So the first adventure was pretty standard lightsaber porn, a battle to liberate the planet Tyrellus (important agricultural planet for the Republic) after a bloody coup left the planet in Separatist hands.

In the second adventure, the heroes were sent after pirates who had raided shipments of bacta. But it turned out the pirates had been hired by a benevolent Hutt, and were being used to treat an outbreak of a flesh eating disease on a small Republic world. Their pleas for help from the Senate had been ignored, and the trail ultimately led to a corrupt bureaucrat, who had been diverting Repblic aid to line his own pockets...
