Mana Skrew in Magic

I'm playing a lot of Duels of the Planeswalkers, and I find that I get mana-screwed at least 30% of the time. Sometimes the deck forces you to run cards that cost too much, but other times you take an initial hand with 3 land and don't see your 4th land for 6 turns - which is basically a game over scenario.

I am not sure how I feel about mana skrew. I like the random aspect of magic, but at the same time, it really infuriates me when I have cards in my hand that can deal with a particular situation but I am unable to cast them so many turns into the game when I *should* have been able to cast them. At times, I wish I could just discard 2 random spells to go in my deck, find a land, and put it directly into play... because otherwise, I'm just going to lose - and that's no fun at all.

Duels of the Planeswalkers might be exasperating the situation more than it does in paper magic - I don't know because it's been 7 or 8 years since I played paper magic. I'm playing Duels 2012 and 2013 at the same time. I'm trying the Knight deck right now in Duels, but the removal spells are terrible. You have to pay 5 mana to exile creatures (Iona's Judgement)... or 4 mana to kill a creature... and it has a restriction of having to be 5 or more power! These cards frankly suck. I lose so many games because I cannot remove creatures due to only having 4 lands on turn 10. It's just stupid.

In Duels 2013, there are so many decks that are not very competitive because most of their big cards are 4 and 5 mana. If you don't play your proper 4-drop on turn 4, you lose. It's a really frustrating and sucky feeling to lose like this, and not being able to significantly impact the curve of your deck due to the deck building limitations makes it even more infuriating.

Also in Duels 2013, I cheat and mulligan 5 times. I do this frequently. I do this not because I want the nut hand, but sometimes it takes me 5 randomizations just to find any hand that has more than 1 land in it (or alternatively, it takes 5 randomizes not to get a hand with 6 land in it...)

Sometimes I wish in magic that there were 2 decks - one for land and one for spells. Obviously this idea would break the game in its current state, but I think having consistent resources would produce more interesting games based on skill, and would place less emphasis on whether a player was mana-screwed or not.

Even if you get your land on turn 5 or 6 that you should have gotten on turn 4, because of tempo, it is often impossible to come back unless something equally devastating/unlucky happened to your opponent.

Anyway, sorry for the rant if this offends you in any way. It's just happened to me so many times in Duels during the last 4 or 5 days that I find that I'm actually getting angry and appaled that it happens so frequently. It takes away the fun out of the game - even the opposite cases where it happens to my opponent as it creates for a boring game.
The standard way to avoid it for the beginning player is to just make 40% of your deck lands. Control decks need more, and decks like Valakut (a combo deck using Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle and Primeval Titan) need more still, while weenie decks and burn decks usually need less. (Though some weenie decks make use of card draw.)

Obviously in DOTP this isn't so much of an option, but still...

In Duels, the game often adds at least 21 lands for you automatically, and I usually include the 4 fetch lands on top of this. This means most decks have 25 lands, which turns out to be 41.6% land. Despite this, I am still experiecing 30% mana screw.
Play paper magic and tune the deck yourself, use cantrips to make your deck "smaller" and actually construct your curve yourself.

That's what I used to do when I played paper magic - I used to run blue with cards like Whispers of the Muse, Wall of Blossoms, Impulse, Brainstorm and stuff like that. Sometimes I used to play mono-black to draw a lot of cards. Are these type of builds still viable in the current type 2 format?

In Duels though, at least half of the decks are not viable, and most decks don't have that kind of card draw or cantrips. Obediant Dead has some, and the mono-blue decks have some spells, but nowhere near as powerful as the blue decks I've constructed many years ago. I feel gimped frankly
You do realize that the decks in DoTP are slightly improved intro decks and then you can upgrade them to event deck power? If I played any of them agaisnt any of the decks I've ever build, I'd destroy every single one of them without even trying. They are made to be bad, would you rather see turn 2 combo decks or decks that can kill the fastest at turn 5 and usually kill at turn 8+? How fun would it be for a new player to be killed at turn 2 during his first game in multiplayer.

Also which deck is not competitive with the others, in 2013, other than the mill deck.

Finally... thin your deck, remove most of those bigs 6+ cmc cards from your decks and tweak them better.

I am not an inexperienced mtg player, despite the fact that I haven't played in many years. I used to do very, very well in tournaments and some of my decks were even featured on the magic dojo "decks to beat" monthly listing.

I realize that not all of the decks in duels 2013 are "competitive" like the decks I used to make, but the mana screw issues seem to happen to decks that even have low curves. Drawing 1 land 5 times in a row in Duels is not an uncommon experience. I watch Nemo's channel, and this happens to him about as often as it does to me. He complains about it in every video.

Lastly, The deck is thinned. All of the unlocked decks only have 60 cards in them. I can't thin them any more than that.

But when decks like "Goblin Gangland" exist, it is very hard to win when you are mana skewed as this deck can win on turn 3 or 4 somewhat consistently.

Honestly, at least 30% of my games I don't have 4 land on turn 5, and I'm starting to think it's even more than 30%.

I just had an interesting thought. I wonder if Wizards would ever consider printing an artifact or enchantment that does something like this:

"Search your library for and remove all land cards. Shuffle and exile them. Whenever you would draw a card, you may choose to draw a card from either your library or the exile lands.  Spells and abilities that affect your library may not affect lands exiled by [this card].

If [this card] leaves the battlefield, all lands exiled with [this card] remain in exile."

Hugely risky, but given the right CMC it could be insanely powerful. (I can't help but wonder how long it would take someone to figure out exactly how to break the ever-loving s**t out of it, though.  And I guess it would also be a tremendous screw-over for dedicated mill decks.)

That's what RPJesus tends to do. That's why I don't think he's a real person, but some Magic Card Archive Server sort of machine, that is programmed to react to other posters' comments with obscure cards that do in fact exist, but somehow missed by even the most experienced Magic players. And then come up with strange combos with said cards. All of that is impossible for a normal human to do given the amount of time he does it and how often he does it. He/It got me with Light of Sanction, which prompted me to go to RQ&A to try and find if it was even possible to do combat damage to a creature I control (in light that Mark of Asylum exists).

The goblin deck cannot win before turn 4 and to do that, you'd have to have one of the best hand possible and for them to have nothing, will it ever happen? Once every 10000 games?

Turn 1 goblin guide (2 dmg)
Turn 2 warren instigator (4 dmg)
Turn 3 goblin chieftain (13 dmg) Goblin goon + goblin piledriver from the warren instigator
Turn 4 whatever and kill

My bad.... but like I said, you have to have the perfect hand to pull it off and I have to do absolutely nothing.

If he want to pull this off, he got to have 7 cards out of 9 in his hands
Turn 0 : 1/7 in opening hand (chancellor)
Turn 1 : 3/7 in hand (land, guide)
Turn 2 : 5/8 in hand (land, piledriver)
Turn 3 : 7/9 in hand (land goblin chief)

Half of those are 1of and the other half are 2of in the deck. While I'd have 2 turns to put something in front of any of those.... Which one is most likely? that you got a godhand or that I have anything to put in front of them and probably even kill them.

Here is the problem. You're not supposed to always have 4 lands on turn five. Your deck is supposed to be playable with three lands, not require 4. That's the very problem you're fighting with. The numbers you're pulling up are good : 30% of the time not hitting 4 lands until turn six shouldn't end the game right there. You need more low-cost spells and less high-end cards.

Also, you should post this in the DotP forums. You'd get more insightful answers there, as they know the decks and could answer more thoroughly.

Finally, before you leave, spill (make it look like an accident) one hundred singleton, random cards onto the floor. Pick them up, put them in a pile, and say "EEE-DEE-AYCH".

 

I know this sounds dumb at first, but it will work. With the method outlined above, you will draw the attention of players that play older formats by asking for cards that no one on Earth can reasonably afford. You will get the attention of the wanna-be pro, Stomp-n00bz players by pulling out a well known decklist and declare that you have "tech" to make it better. You will get the attention of all the kind, helpful players by seemingly not knowing the most common format by having non-Standard legal cards in a deck that you claim is Standard legal. Finally, you catch all the rest of the Magic players by saying "EEE-DEE-AYCH" (EDH (or Commander)).

And there you have it. You will be talking to more people than you would have wanted to talk to in no time.

WotC also prints lots of cards that have redundant wording.  Does that mean WotC rules team doesn't conceptualize the rules well?  No, it just means that sometimes extra wording to make the card more clear doesn't hurt and is sometimes helpful.

Means that the templates have changed since they did that kind of foolishness. By putting that kind of text onto a card it strongly implies that the rules don't normally function that way. The only time it is acceptable is in reminder text, which is distinctly different from normal rules text.

Compare Alpha through 4th or 5th edition printings of cards to modern cards and oracle text.

I expect that to go the way of the dodo in a few years, as well. But you don't see cards that say "exile the thing, it can't be interacted with by stuff that targets its previous zone". Which, honestly, is a rather weird thing to say. It's like saying that removing your car from the garage stops the car from burning down with the garage if the garage should catch fire. It assumes the reader has a fundamental inability to grasp basic logic.

Here is the problem. You're not supposed to always have 4 lands on turn five. Your deck is supposed to be playable with three lands, not require 4. That's the very problem you're fighting with. The numbers you're pulling up are good : 30% of the time not hitting 4 lands until turn six shouldn't end the game right there. You need more low-cost spells and less high-end cards.

Also, you should post this in the DotP forums. You'd get more insightful answers there, as they know the decks and could answer more thoroughly. 



Well, in duels, you don't have a choice as to what spells you can run really. You have 100 cards (sometimes 90) to pick from to form a 60 card deck. Sometimes the low casting cost spells are so bad/ineffective, you just can't run them. But most of the time, the bulk of the spells are in the 3-6 mana slots. Only the goblin deck has a really low curve, but even for goblins, even it cannot avoid 4 mana cast spells (although some of these you probably want to run).

I don't recall running so many high casting cost stuff in my decks when I played paper magic, but in Duels, you unfortunately don't have total freedom to design a deck :/

RtB under owner's control is definitely not redundant. Contrast Flicker and Cloudshift. If you cast Act of Treason on a Hill Giant and Flicker it, your opponent will get it back when it comes back in. If you Cloudshift it instead, you get to keep it forever.

I haven't played DotP 2013, so I couldn't say for sure. However, from my experience with the older versions, that isn't true at all. Judging by the fact that it has a lot of success, something a game where 30% of your games amount to "well, you jsut won because of screw" and another 30% to "well, I just won because of mana screw" wouldn't be able to achieve, I'm sure you can understand that I have some difficulties believing you have the necessary experience with DotP to correctly choose your cards. It may be frustrating to play a subpar card like Runeclaw Bear, but even pros have played Mindless Null in draft before. Sometimes the subpar card is what you need.

Finally, before you leave, spill (make it look like an accident) one hundred singleton, random cards onto the floor. Pick them up, put them in a pile, and say "EEE-DEE-AYCH".

 

I know this sounds dumb at first, but it will work. With the method outlined above, you will draw the attention of players that play older formats by asking for cards that no one on Earth can reasonably afford. You will get the attention of the wanna-be pro, Stomp-n00bz players by pulling out a well known decklist and declare that you have "tech" to make it better. You will get the attention of all the kind, helpful players by seemingly not knowing the most common format by having non-Standard legal cards in a deck that you claim is Standard legal. Finally, you catch all the rest of the Magic players by saying "EEE-DEE-AYCH" (EDH (or Commander)).

And there you have it. You will be talking to more people than you would have wanted to talk to in no time.

Every "return to battlefield under it's owner's control" is redundant, and they are still printing those cards today.
 


RtB under owner's control is definitely not redundant. Contrast Flicker and Cloudshift. If you cast Act of Treason on a Hill Giant and Flicker it, your opponent will get it back when it comes back in. If you Cloudshift it instead, you get to keep it forever.

I haven't played DotP 2013, so I couldn't say for sure. However, from my experience with the older versions, that isn't true at all.


Pretty much. Only have extensive experience with a few decks, but I've played at least 1-2 games with pretty much every deck and they all had a fairly decent curve. Dream puppets might get kinda shafted, still in the process of unlocking it, but as I recall the only early game it gets is some mill cards and Jace's Phantasms. Really wish I could steal some Fog Banks from Talrand

No. It wouldn't. CLOUDSHIFT would work the same. If you dropped 'under its owner's control' from Momentary Blink and did the whole Act of Treason->Blink thing, it would come back under your control since you are the one bringing it in.

This is definitely something that I'd always want reminder text on though.

Unfortunately, VCLs do not currently have the tools necessary to take moderation actions directly. VCLs submit their actions to ORCs, who then actually perform the action. This processing can take between a few minutes and several hours, depending on how busy/attentive the ORCs are.

If you see something that needs VCL attention, please use this thread to make a request and a VCL will look at it as soon as possible. CoC violations should be reported to Customer Service using the "report post" button. Please do not disrupt the thread by making requests of either kind in-thread.

Dual means two. A duel is a battle between two people. Lands that make two colors of mana are dual lands. A normal Magic battle is a duel.

The only deck that's subpart is the mill deck, some other decks are slower to start, dont expect to win with the gaya deck that bounce your creatures agaisnt the goblins all the time, but if you make it to turn 6, the goblin deck doesnt have any fuel and for that you have to *gasp* exchange creatures!

Killing your super important 2 power creature to kill that goblin piledriver is worth it, you have slowed it down and eventually your big creatures will come on....

I played a few times recently and I took a look at the 6+ CMC
Ajani : 1
Chandra : 2
Garruk : 6 (with 6 acceleration)
Jace : 2 (or 0, the chancellor of spires arent there to be played)
Goblin : 0
Liliana : 7 (but the deck is only focused on board control and I stall the game to late game and there's still 4 mana acceleration)
Soldier : 2
Exalted : 0
Gaya whatever deck : 6 (slowest deck, but if you get to turn 6, they are screwed)
Talrand : 4
Aura : 2
Golgari : 0
Nivmizzet : 3
Rakdos : 0
Selesnya : 3
Boros : 3


Maybe you should thin your decks properly and make sure you dont keep the 6+ unless they are very important for that second breath if the deck get pass turn 6 (like sun titan for the solider deck)
