Ooof... If you haven't seen the musical, the movie could quite possible be a confusing dissapointment.

If you have seen the musical, then you have already seen the movie and loved despite its flaws.

I'm still trying to find time to see it again while it is still in theaters.

I dunno, what are your standards for movies?

Also, if you are going to watch the movie, you might want to read up on the plot and listen to the music first, because otherwise it would probably be easy to get lost, and you don't really lose anything by doing so.

I dunno, I saw it without seeing the stage performance first, and it was still pretty easy to follow. When it comes right down to it, Les Mis isn't the most complicated plot in existence, and the lyrics make everything pretty clear.

Of course, I also originally thought Barinellos said MLB version of Les Mis, which brings to mind the New York Yankess trying to harmonize in the role of Javert, so I've probably already gone down stranger paths.
Hmm...I think I like Fluttershy for Cosette.  And, if we're going to do that, may as well run with Keeper's Theory and have Marius be Rainbow Dash.

I can only conclude that this is the doing of Trickster Mode. Yes, Roxy! You can kiss Jane if you want! :D

I found the plot of Les Miserables hard to follow, but I think the accoustics in the theater I was in weren't so great. And, in fairness, it was a high school production. (Although also in fairness, I went to a rich kid school, so we had a @$&%ing rotating mechanical set and the lead singers were tearjerkingly awesome.)

I have noticed that people who love the theater production love the film. Kind of interesting, that.

Not more so than fans of the stage production being fans of the soundtrack. The way it is for me, Les Mis the movie is more of a piece of merchandise than an actual work of art in itself. It is a representation of the musical much in the way the soundtract or a T-shirt might be. If there are parts of the movie I don't like, well then it detracts somewhat from my enjoyment (just like a poorly fitted shirt), but my main satisfaction from the movie comes from being clo

So, who'll be Eponine?... man the pony pun involved in that one is hard to pass up.

Hmm...not sure, will have to think about that, but like the Thernardier casting.

I can't decide if Celestia works better as the Bishop, or Fantine.  while the Bishop was the mentor figure for Valjean (Twilight as Valjean?  Maybe, but have to think on it more), Fantine was arguably the Christ-figure for the story, as shown in the ending, which would also work...

Thoughts?

Speaking of him, I was very upset they cut www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipfpP0__aTk ... from the movie. It is a great song that shows Thernardier's life philosophy without the comedy.

"The fuel on which science runs is ignorance. Science is like a hungry furnace that must be fed logs from the forests of ignorance that surround us. In the process, the clearing we call knowledge expands, but the more it expands, the longer its perimeter and the more ignorance comes into view." -Matt Ridley, Genome

Oh man on an unrelated note I think I finally figured out how I can simply and relatively efficiently convert the Alara anthology to PDF and add all the illustrations. I just happened to stumble on a way to do it in InDesign, which is a program I'm not particularly familiar with but which should be easy to work with, now that I'm playing around with it a bit. Just thought I would mention that, since I know people have been waiting for that anthology for a while now.

And since this seems to be relatively simple, maybe I can actually think seriously about compiling a Phyrexia, Innistrad, or Ravnica anthology.

So, what sort of Magic do you guys play?

I have a black red Vampire Nocturnus deck built for standard. Working on tuning it to not insta-fold to contro decks.

I have a Mayael EDH deck that I keep myself entertained with by rotating the fatties between games.

And I have a collection of every duel deck printed to date.
Let's see. I currently have running:

A quasi-operational dedicated reanimator that's semi-Legacy competitive, but lacks the blue element to really compete. Normally reanimates Jin-Gitaxias on turn one, but has other options to deal with problematic decks.

White weenie. It's just white weenie. Six global pumps (Honor of the Pure, Crusade) and a bunch of average turbo-weenies (Beloved Chaplain, Student of Warfare, Hero of Bladehold).

An unfinished Zombies list that I only just recently completed a collection for. Still need to work on it, it can go either blisteringly aggro or grindy midrange depending on how I put it together.

Monoblack control list that needs heavy work to function properly, pretty much operates off a backbone of Hymn to Tourach, Mind Twist, and other friends.

And my killer app, my white/blue control list. Pretty much just stalls out the game with Energy Field and waits for Luminarch Ascension to turn on, then wins the game shortly after. Literally the entire deck is 4 Luminarch and ways to stop the opponent from doing anything at all. It sits there and is generally invincible until it wins. I'm not much of a braggart, but the deck is sort of unfairly powerful against 90% of the random players I go up against. If you're not packing dedicated enchantment removal, you lose.

Aaaand my next project is an order to put together Robots, both red and blue, then some random midrange/ramp artifacts list that works off of Metalworker and friends as a skeleton. Still in its alpha stages.
WHO AM I?
HARDER THAN DIAMONDS STRONGER THAN STEEL AND BURSTING WITH VIGOR. THAT'S THE WAY THE BEAST ENGINE PLAYS.
PROUD BEARER OF THE MOST INCORRECT THING JIVANMUKTA'S READ ON THESE FORUMS YET AWARD. SO BRING IT ON. ALL OF YOU. I have taken the top of the mountain and I will accept all challenges. Attack me, all at once if you must! I will never falter! THE ONLY GLORY IS IN DEATH. AND DON'T FORGET TO COWER BEFORE THE METALLIC MIGHT OF JUSTICE.
One deck for each Shard.
One deck for each guild, with a new Simic deck in the works.
One each for the printed walkers except Venser. Because screw that useless rock! His spot is taken by Kiora.
One Synod deck.
One token/spirit deck built around the character Cara Holis.

And in other news, I'm thinking Luna for Javert on the MLP Les Miserables. Twilight as Jean ValJean and Celestia as the Bishop.
A deck which uses an elfball engine to cast giant wurms on turn 3. A deck that uses Exploration and Fastbond and a critical land density to hit five mana on T2 (land - bond - land - dork // land - land) and proceed to beat with Endless Wurms or Shivan Wurms on turn 2. Then a deck that uses madness outlets to swing with angry wurms as fast as possible, which is by far the best out of the three.

Then there's really a boatload of decks that all have either some kind of synergy doing work or are absolutely and utterly gimmicky. Sometimes both when I'm playing twenty clone/reanimate effects in my standard thragtusk deck. A modern death and taxes deck. The rest are all casual decks of various efficacy, ranging from infinite selfmill turbofog that wins by one-hit-ko'ing the opponent to one that absolutely and utterly breaks conch horn (its the most unfair card in the deck) because half the deck has a miracle cost and one that tries to land a Gutter Grime through dorks and then wants to chain throught self-reanimating critters as fast as possible but never actually works.

Most of them really only work against midrange decks, though. Too many critical stuff that it usually just kills me if you're playing disruption or try to win with a non-green deck.

I still haven't managed to get playing much real Magic again. >.>

I used to spend a lot of time playing against myself in MWhacky Spaceship, but I've finally decided that the software for that is basically falling apart as more and more sets are added, so now I just play a bunch of DotP. Less creativity, but at least I get the depth of having an opponent that isn't me!

Negativity aside, I am really enjoying the Izzet deck in that game. Also Chandra's deck. I love just how many phoenix's they managed to fit in there. Also, I've played way too much Planechase.

Oh yeah, and I'm actually going to a Gatecrash prerelease probably. Progress! Also, pretty excited to visit Card Kingdom for the first time. It's taken me a year and a half of living in Seattle to finally check out the city's fanciest card shop, but I think I'm prepared now.

Of course, this wouldn't be a CommanderJim post if I didn't at some point acknowledge how long and rambly it is.

P.S. At the prerelease, I'll be playing Simic, or Dimir or Orzhov or Boros or Gruul, in that order. I'd probably be happy with any of them though, to be honest. I am somewhat easily pleased. What are everyone else's choices?

IMAGE(http://steamsignature.com/status/default/76561197995631463.png) No longer a commander as of 7/29/13.

I've got two decks I play in casual, a Dragon tokens that has a tendency to get ridiculous quite quickly, and a Precursor Golem deck which gets pulled out when we need to annoy someone, especially since it has the ability to go infinite on the tokens through a rather complicated set up. It generally requires a couple others to play defense, but when you really want to make someone mad... It is quite fun to out grief the griefers. My other deck is an all legends EDH championed by Child of New Alara, and then the bWG tokens I run for FNM.
I don't play much. I have an Artificer's Intuition and a Runechanter's Pike deck. I want to reword the second one.
Also considering building a Martyr-Proclamation deck, as I already have a playset of Ajani Vengeant and Runed Halo. Just to curbstomp every aggro deck out there.

I don't play Magic as often as I'd like, because of lack of opponents (and I'm not social enough to just sit at my local gameshop and hope for games).

I've got a couple of decks that I semi-regularly play. My favorite deck is a mono-Blue control list that uses Calcite Snapper for early board control and offense (and it gives me a good reason to play Deprive) and uses Sphinx of Jwar Isle to clean up. The rest of the deck is counterspells, bounce and other ways of shutting creatures down. It was actually a pretty decent budget deck for Standard back when everything in it was legal.

And I've recently put together an Izzet/Talrand deck, which is one of my faster decks. I love it because it digs through the deck with draw/discard spells, which always gives you the tools you need.

And I have a terrible Momir Vig-EDH deck.

If I played more, I'd probably have more decks. I enjoy building decks, especially if I can find nice little synergies, but if they're not getting played I don't find it worth the effort.

Edit: @Beast: I also had a Luminarch Ascenscion-deck, but it was so boring to play and play against that I dismantled it. It was a sure-fire win, though.

After the official forums lost most of their functionality, a once vibrant community of Vorthos was wiped out.The survivors founded a new place to discuss all things concerning with the art, flavor and storylines of Magic: The Gathering. Come join us.

I don't play much, either, again for lack of players :/ Although my girlfriend and I play occasionally, when we're not distracted by other things.

I currently am down to just one deck, a Simic deck with a bunch of Gilder Bairns that drives everyone else crazy. I am naturally quite excited for the stupidity that is New Simic. :P

Oh! Wait, I do have one other deck--it's an I Planeswalker deck. Remember that format? It's a red-blue Goblin deck and it's completely absurd. It's designed to reach a certain critical mass where I end up drawing half my deck and generating a ridiculous number of goblin tokens in one turn. I'm... pretty sure it's broken in this format, actually. >_>

I miss I Planeswalker. That was a fun way to play. :P

Oh, and my sister, who borrows my cards, has an Orzhov deck. Again, the new cards from Gatecrash are going to be very fun to add in. She's got oodles of lifegain and lifedrain.

Control decks eat me alive because my primary wincons are Vampire Nocturnus and Bloodline Keeper (last night I said "I tap Keeper" and then I cringed a bit :P ) and those suck against Sweep.dec, but I got some inspiration last night to add some Appetite for Brains to my 75 and a pair of Runechanter's Pikes to my board because my yard is full of kill spells and discard by the late game and most of my dudes are evasive, so anything I play will be a threat from then on.

Also, two kids at the shop last night told me I was their favorite person there. <3

I'm glad this thread is nothing BUT off-topic, because quite honestly I don't know where to bring this up.

So I'm already noticing several people interested in Ravnican-based forum games here (which, quite honestly surprised me with how dead things were and with Skibo missing). My point here is that I had been hoping to to get the community gathered to create a traditional voting game in time for Dragon's Maze. This after I released a normal voting game based around M13. The same one I started working on a year ago, after Yanmato and my game on M12.

So the point I'm trying to make here ireal would people still be interested in traditional voting game for Dragon's Maze, even after Cato's one and eddned's not-quite-voting game.

And if I put out a more generic voting game in between then and now, even if there is enough time between now and then, will people even be interested in it? Or will I have to hold on to it until M14, when the legendaries I'm basing around may be removed or swapped out?

So, yeah; please feedback thank you.

Sorry 42, I can't provide any feedback, having never played any of the games. Maybe I can offer the thought that there might be the risk of fatigue if there's no gap between the games.

But I've got something different I wanted to discuss, but I'm not sure if I should make a new thread about it. I've been thinking of doing a table-top-like gaming system around Mt:G, but before I get invested in it, I need some thoughts from smart people (that would be all of you). Which parts of Magic do you think has to be in such a game, both mechanically and flavorfully?

Really enjoyed it.
Jace x Emmara is my new ship and it's nice to know that Ral subverts quite a few assumptions I had about him as an Izzet mage.
A thought occured to me after reading some crap in Sally's equivalent of FSS (and I thought our forum had it bad, that place is no man's land D

We know the statistics for getting a latent spark are 1:1,000,000 and the statistics for igniting that spark are 1:1,000,000, for a grand total of :1,000,000,000,000 for any sentient being becoming a fully functioning walker.

We also know that the only way to ignite a latent spark is through severe physical or psychological stimulation (most typically, almost dying).

Now since we have yet to see any scenario where upon a spark failed to trigger when its 'host' (for a lack of a better word) almost died or whatever, what this says to me is that, overwhelmingly, the multivers is a safe, boring place where nothing of interest happens.

Most planes people just lead out their boring little lives as farmers or artisans or whatever and never really have to deal with civil war, or a robot zombie holocaust, or being eaten by Barinellos second cousin once removed or what have you.

I mean, we've heard it implied on a number of occasions that we're only visiting the most interesting planes where stuff happens and a Planeswalker won't planeswalk there and immediately die due to an unbreathable atmosphere or whatever, but I've never really considered that the spark statistics backed that up.
Well, that sort of makes sense, doesn't it? If you look at the world's population, the places with the largest populations tend to also be the more stable ones. You can't really grow as a population if half your children get killed off in the summer, a third of your crops have been burned by autumn, and the local necromancers come by in winter for their "harvest", but at the same time you're not as likely to get Ignited if you live in the planar equivalent of Idaho.
but at the same time you're not as likely to get Ignited if you live in the planar equivalent of Idaho.

Now I can't unsee a character igniting out of sheer boredom.

Like, they were so bored, their spark registered it a severe mental trauma, and they ignited.

But yeah, this makes sense. This would make Moag the norm rather than the exception, interestingly.
